Guards Polo Club - Zacara and Talandracas prepare to go head to head in this Sunday’s Cartier Queen’s Cup Final.

Zacara def. Enigma 11-8 Lyndon Lea’s Zacara team moved into their second consecutive Cartier Queen’s Cup Final after beating Jerome Wirth’s Enigma 11-8 on The Queen’s Ground at Guards Polo Club. They are the only team to remain unbeaten in this competition and have impressed with every game. Watching some of this match from the Royal Box was HRH The Princess Royal, who was visiting Guards Polo Club as the guest of the Riding For The Disabled organisation, for whom she is President. Although Enigma did not take the lead at any time in this first semi-final, they were very much in contention throughout the six chukkas. There was some great play from the team’s two Guillermos - Willington and Caset - while their patron, Jerome Wirth had a impressive game too, producing some strong and confident play. However Facundo Pieres was once again dominant for Zacara - he is the high-est scoring professional in this tournament - and this match was no exception. He scored eight of his team’s 11 goals and has some superb horsepower to complement his great game. Such a combination has proved difficult to beat this year and Zacara will head into Sunday’s final favourites to retain the trophy in 2014. Zacara’s Matt Perry was named Most Valuable Player and Pieres received the Best Playing Pony Prize for his mare Moscow from Arnaud Bamberger, Executive Chairman of Cartier

Talandracas def. UAE Polo 10-9 Talandracas caused an upset when they knocked the highly fancied Dubai team out of the quarter-finals. They did the same again in the second semi-final, played on The Duke’s Ground at Guards Polo Club. Edouard Carmignac’s team kept their

nerve in a close game over Sheikha Maitha’s UAE Polo team to win 10-9 and earn their place in Sunday’s final. There had been little to choose between these two teams for much of the match - the scores were level 6-6 at half-time, and for a while it looked as if it was going to go to extra time. Unfortunately UAE Polo were forced to substitute Lucas Monte-verde, who has been so strong for this team in this year’s high-goal, due to an injury and his place was taken by Cristian “Magoo” Laprida in the second chukka. Al-though this did not seem to unsettle the team, Laprida threw himself into the game, such a change of team at this stage in the competition must have had an effect. Pablo MacDonough continued to battle through, strongly supported by the young Englishman Ollie Cudmore, and when you have a 10-goal player of his calibre on the field one should never predict the final result, especially when the scores are so close. However Polito Pieres and his super fast ponies, a combination which has been instrumental in Talandracas’s success - continued to impress in this game. He pro-duced some great runs down the field - the second half saw plenty of open, running polo - and by scoring eight of his team’s goals this afternoon has ensured Edourad Carmignac’s side are through to a final showdown against Zacara this Sunday. Of course Carmignac is no stranger to Queen’s Cup glory though, as he won the presti-gious Cup in 2011. Polito Pieres was named Most Valuable Player and Electo, a six-year-old stallion played by Pablo MacDonough was named Best Playing Pony. They received their prizes from Carrie Perrodo, who also presented the Hubert Perrodo Trophy to win-ning patron Edouard Carmignac. Hubert Perrodo was the patron of the high-goal Labegorce polo team, which won the Queen’s Cup in 2004 and this Cup is played for in his memory. (game report by Diana Butler) Sunday morning at 11am, Lucchese and El Remanso will play for the Cartier Trophy (sub final)

Antelope/Film Finance made their third twelve goal final appearance Sunday against Cotterel/Long Beach. The first chukker was fast and furi-

ous setting the tone for the rest of the match. Patrick Uretz was on fire scoring 3 goals in the first. The fast polo proved to be favorable to Ruben Coscia and Marcos Llambias who quickly answered each goal by the opposing team. Antelope/Film Finance maintained a 1 goal lead going into half time 8-7. The fast pace continued throughout the 4th and 5th chukkers. Antelope/Film Finance pulled ahead in the 5th to lead 12-9. Early in the 6th chukker Marcos Llambias took control of the game scoring 3 goals in addition to a goal scored by Ruben Coscia. The game was down to the wire, but Jesse Bray broke the tie, scoring on a fast breakaway. Santi Trotz’ horse Centella won Best Playing Pony. Patrick Uretz won MVP.
