Sustrans Gold Award for Shrewsbury School

The Wilfred Owens Primary School has become the first in Shropshire to achieve a Sustrans Gold Mark. The award demonstrates their commitment to training and promotion to help families walk, cycle or scoot to school. Jess Holohan, Sustrans Bike It Officer in Shrewsbury, worked with the school and presented them with their award. What did your support to the Wilfred Owen school involve? Wilfred Owen have worked with Sustrans and Bike it for 3 years. Over that time they have taken part in a range of activities at the school such as Cycle and Scooter Skills, Bike maintenance classes, learn to ride lessons and a range of curriculum linked classroom activities. A combination of these activities has encouraged their children to begin travelling in a more active way on a more regular basis. What advice would you offer to other schools looking to improve their active travel? Schools that want to encourage their children to take part in active travel need to support them with help and advice, such as on-road skills training and providing them with a safe area to store bikes and scooters. They should contact their local Sustrans Bike it Officer for more help. Jess works with schools within Shrewsbury free of charge, she only asks in return schools support all Sustrans activities. Sainsbury's School Games- Huge Return on Investment

The Government has published new figures on the Sainsbury's School Games for the 2013/14 academic year which reveal the event is delivering a huge return on investment. Statistics released from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport show that £21.95 million of public funding was invested in the Sainsbury's School Games across 2013/14. A total of 17,800 schools, with 7.09 million eligible students, participated in the event over the academic year. View the full news item The Department of Culture, Media and Sport also released the average public sector cost per eligible student at schools participating in the School Games for 2013-14. Input indicators show what is being ‘bought’ with public money, i.e. the resources being invested into delivering the results that DCMS and partners are aiming to achieve. The report details schools participating in the games, the students at these schools and the public sector finances allocated to the School Games. Download a copy

2014 National Swimming Census

The Amateur Swimming Association published a report on why school swimming should be taken seriously and why it should be a priority for teachers, parents and politicians alike. Main Points-

• Swimming is the only sport that saves lives. It is also the only sport that MUST be taught in every primary school as part of the national curriculum – it is not optional • Although school swimming is a national curriculum requirement, over 1,300 primary schools (around 1 in 14) do not offer swimming provision at Key Stage 2 • By assigning a School Swimming Champion and working closely with the ASA, primary schools will be able to increase the impact of lessons and help more children to leave primary school able to swim a minimum of 25 metres unaided • If primary schools commit to teaching the ASA’s recommended minimum of 25 hours of swimming lessons a year, an estimated 200,000 additional children would leave primary school being able to swim • Drowning is the third highest cause of accidental death of children in the UK • As well as being a life saving skill, swimming also promotes health and fitness, is a fun and family friendly activity Download a copy

Health, Well Being and Attainment Report

Public Health England have published a new report to show how education and health are closely linked Key points from the evidence

1. Pupils with better health and wellbeing are likely to achieve better academically. 2. Effective social and emotional competencies are associated with greater health and wellbeing, and better achievement. 3. The culture, ethos and environment of a school influences the health and wellbeing of pupils and their readiness to learn. 4. A positive association exists between academic attainment and physical activity levels of pupils.

Outcomes specifically linked to physical activity:

Children and young people who are aerobically fit have higher academic scores. The intensity and duration of exercise are both linked to improved academic performance, including GCSE results at age 15 and notably girls results in science. Physical activity has been linked to improved classroom behaviour across the whole school. Notable among the benefits are improved pro-social behaviour and peer relationships, with resulting reductions in disruptive classroom behaviour. Participation in extra-curricular activities also has a positive effect on attainment.

What the Nation Thinks About PE

The Big PE Conversation, conducted by researchers at the University of Birmingham, will spark the conversation and look to uncover what has inspired, or hindered, our behaviour in later years – with a view to shaping the PE lessons of the future to encourage a sustainable, healthy lifestyle.

As a nation, we are currently not doing enough physical activity to meet the minimum required to stay healthy.

Evidence shows that the amount of physical activity undertaken by children decreases as they get become older.

Ofsted have been critical of PE at primary school level and adolescents are turning their back on physical activity at an alarming rate: a trend that is particularly prevalent for girls between 11-15

To complete the survey, participants must be over 18 years old, be a current resident of the United Kingdom and have attended school within the United Kingdom. View the full news item

Cycling Delivery Plan The government have released a Cycling Delivery Plan (16th October 2014) which sets out how Britain can be transformed into a cycling nation. The plan was criticised for lacking ambition and dedicated funding. This lead to a parliamentary debate discussing the progress made towards implementing the recommendations from the ‘Get Britain Cycling’ Report. Sustrans, a leading UK charity enabling people to travel by foot bike or public transport, along with British Cycling and other organisations have campaigned for- - At least £10 per head for cycling delivered through existing government funding arrangements. - The targets supporting the Government’s vision that “cycling becomes the natural choice for shorter journeys, or as part of a longer journey” to be revised to become more robust - The data used in the plan to only account for England outside of London and to account for population growth.

High Quality Inclusive Training for

PE

The English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS) believes that every young person should have access to an active lifestyle regardless of ability or impairment. To make this happen, a positive experience in PE plays an important role There is free inclusive PE training available for primary and secondary schools across the UK through the Sainsbury’s Active Kids for All scheme. The initiative is specifically designed to improve the quality of PE provision for young disabled people in mainstream schools. Teachers will be supported to ensure all pupils are engaged and make good progress within PE, both of which are essential for teaching. For more information about the training and to hear from some of those trained visit the programme page If you have a connection with a school please make them aware of this training and together we can support the delivery of Inclusive PE! To register interest for individuals to take part in this training please ask them to contact: [email protected] or visit: www.inclusivepe-eng.co.uk.

#protectyourschoolgrounds

The Basic Need for School Places challenge is affecting a large number of schools across England. Learning Through Landscapes are concerned that many schools feel that the only option they have is to place additional classroom buildings on to school playing fields- this means reduced space to learn and play outdoors for children. On the evening of 21st October there is the launch of the #protectyourschoolgrounds campaign with a short film featuring Sir David Attenborough.
