Summer sport festival a sizzling success Young people from all over the county came together in soaring temperatures to compete in the Summer Shropshire Homes School Sport Festival, as part of Sainsbury’s School Games. Over 1,000 participants from 50 primary and 22 secondary schools took part in 21 events, including dodgeball, archery, rounders, golf, tennis, cricket and cycling. Energize – the County Sports Partnership for Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin, was one of the main organisers of the games. Chief Executive Chris Child, said: “We passionately believe there is an activity out there for everyone. Our aim is to help everyone find that activity that gets their heart beating faster – and the best time to start is when you are young. We had a primary and secondary school day, and trying new things is what it is all about. People need to be active every day so we need to try to find ways to encourage that.” Leading independent property builders Shropshire Homes sponsored the Olympic-style event, as the company shares Energize’s ethos to encourage and promote competitive sport for young people. The festival took place at Shrewsbury Sports Village, and on the day finalists were split into six opposing regions – East, South and North Shropshire, Shrewsbury, Telford & Wrekin Phoenix and Telford & Wrekin Burton Borough. Results from each event were added together to give each region a total, with East Shropshire emerging victorious, topping the table in both the primary and secondary school competitions. Shrewsbury and North Shropshire came second and third in the primary event, while South Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin Phoenix placed joint second in the secondary competition, with Telford & Wrekin Burton Borough third.

Sport stars including Great Britain Paralympic archer Mel Clarke, GB Paralympic tandem cyclist Helen Scott, England high jumper Bethan Partridge and mountain sports athlete and adventurer Finn McCann were present at the event, to inspire and encourage the young people in their activities.

There were also more than 90 outstanding young leaders, taking on the roles of team managers, officials and event managers. Their involvement and support during the two day event was key to making the festival run smoothly.

Tip of the Month from Shropshire Wild Teams!

Simon from Shropshire Wild Teams will be passing on his top tip each month for budding outdoorsmen and women. Why not use Simon’s tips as part of lesson times or encourage children to during break times.

Tip number 1 from Shropshire Wild Teams, a potential use for teachers in a digital age: what happens when you have left your smart phones sat-nav at home?

We can use the sun to find our way: Between 6am and 6pm you can use your watch to find south. Point the hour hand at the sun. Right in between this hand and the ’12’ is south. So right behind must be north. It’s a digital watch? Well, on a scrap of paper draw the clock face as it would look, with hands, and use that. You use your phone to tell the time? But what if you have left that at home? Get a stick and stick it in the ground mid-morning. Wait around until what feels like early afternoon. Periodically mark the tip of the stick’s moving shadow and then join them up. It should form a curve. The part of the curve nearest the base of the stick is north and the base of the stick is pointing south (mark it as a line between the two). This is because the sun is always directly south at midday, casting the shortest shadow. It’s been cloudy all day? Hmm, ok, well you could look at the way the majority of a tree’s branches grow towards the sun (southerly). More of that another time…

Reducing sitting time in primary school students

The NIHR CLAHRC (National Institute for Health Research Collaborations for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care) East Midlands healthy schools project has been set up to work with schools in the East Midlands to develop, implement and evaluate a ‘toolbox’ of strategies for teachers to use to break-up or reduce the sitting time of primary school students in the classroom.

The BHFNC will be contributing to this project over the next three and a half years and will be assisting in the recruitment of school stakeholders to the project research network, the development of the evidence-based teacher ‘toolbox’, and the training and professional development of teachers implementing the ‘toolbox’

For further information or to register interest in your school becoming involved in the research project please contact Dr Ash Routen at [email protected]

Change4Life’s 10 Minute Shake up Launched

Thursday 2nd July marked the launch of this year’s Change4Life 10 Minute Shake Up campaign with Disney. The campaign aims to encourage children to do 10-minute bursts of moderate to vigorous activity, inspired by Disney characters, throughout the day – and every day, in order to meet the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity children need.

This year’s campaign launches to coincide with the publication of an evidence review by British Heart Foundation researchers

Key findings:

Over a third of children in the UK are overweight, yet 79% of parents with an overweight child do not recognise that they are, and of those that do, 41% do not realise that it is a health risk.

The new review points to strong evidence that physical activity and sport has a positive impact on children’s social skills and self-esteem. The evidence review also identified further social benefits for children as a result of physical activity including increased confidence and peer acceptance, alongside a link to friendship.

School Inspection Update

There is to be a raised level of focus on Primary PE and School Sport Premium funding.

The latest update to Ofsted inspectors (June 2015) identifies that there will be an increased scrutiny on the use and impact of this funding in both PE and Sport. The report states: Ofsted is committed to encouraging schools to provide a high- quality, broad and balanced curriculum, and this extra government funding seeks to support the provision of PE and sport to enable wider curricula opportunities for children. It is, therefore, important that inspectors report diligently on this important area of the curriculum and how the funding is being used to improve provision.

Test primary pupils’ fitness to avert NHS ‘time bomb’

UKactive calls for routine testing of children's fitness, as report reveals less than half of primary schools are recording time spent being physically active. Primary schools should test pupils' fitness in the same way as subjects like Maths and English to stem the tide of physical inactivity threatening to overwhelm the NHS, a new report from ukactive has concluded. View the full news item here However afPE does NOT support formal fitness testing in primary schools. It considers this a retrograde step in terms of promoting healthy, active lifestyles. It takes this position for the following reasons: • Fitness testing is not good use of the limited curriculum

physical education time in primary schools. • Fitness testing is not a proven effective strategy for

promoting active lifestyles. • Fitness testing can be dull, dreary and dreaded, especially

by the very children whom we want to be more active. • Fitness test scores do not accurately reflect physical activity

levels. Click here for the full response

Young people at risk of becoming ‘hostages to handheld devices’ Youth Sport Trust Chief Executive Alison Oliver has today warned that future generations of young people are at risk of living their lives devoted to technology, 'hostages to handheld devices' and disengaged from physical activity.

Oliver's warning underlines the need for technology to be embraced within PE and school sport to ensure it remains relevant to today's digital generation, keeps them engaged in physical activity, and supports them to develop physical literacy.

Her comments come as the Youth Sport Trust releases a new report, The Class of 2035: promoting a brighter and more active future for the youth of tomorrow, which presents four possible scenarios - both positive and negative - for the future.

The report, conducted for the Youth Sport Trust by the Future Foundation to mark the charity's 20th anniversary and launched at the start of National School Sport Week, provides a unique insight into young people's relationship with physical activity today and 20 years from now.

It warns that PE and school sport are at a critical crossroads and the subject should remain a key priority to avoid a physically and socially disengaged future generation, over dependent on technology, which will result in low physical, social and emotional wellbeing View the full news item
