On Friday 9th October a unique event took part in Telford, a ‘Women Make Sport’ Conference, aiming to boost the number of women who are active across the County.

The event, which took place at the Telford Whitehouse Hotel, was organised by Energize, the County Sports Partnership for Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin. More men are active than women, which Energize and other local organisations are seeking to change and is the reason why this conference took place.

Graham Macpherson from Sport England’s workshop prompted much discussion and pledges from delegates, promising to put their words into action following the event. England Netball and the Amateur Swimming Association shared their marketing tips to draw women’s interest, and Sports Coach UK encouraged discussion on the role of the coach, with further support offered to increase the number of female qualified coaches introduced from Energize in the form of a new coach bursary round.

Delegates make pledges to boost women’s

participation across the County

Over 50 delegates took part in the event, including local sports clubs, schools, National Governing Bodies of Sport, leisure facilities and students. Click here for the full event report

Tip of the Month from Shropshire Wild Teams!

Simon from Shropshire Wild Team shares his tips for Wild Senses. We often ignore what our senses are telling us as there’s often just too much to take in. Think of an average busy high street. To become an effective Outdoorsman or woman, be it tracking an animal or just keeping an eye on the weather, you will need to use all your sensory powers. 1. Give yourself time. It’s best to avoid areas close to edges

and drops or rail tracks and roads in case you become engrossed in something and wander off too close.

2. Begin to slow down as you approach your chosen “wild border.” Settle your breathing.

3. Stop at your border and continue to breathe slowly and steadily. Give yourself a moment.

Step in…

Stand still and listen. Take in the sounds around you. Which sounds are louder than others? Can you just barely hear others? Listen to bird calls, creaks, rustles, hear the wind passing over your ears, traveling through leaves… Please Turn over for more Wild Senses tips…

Wild Senses, from Shropshire Wild Team

Deer Ears. Now cup your hands behind your ears and listen again. Turn around facing new directions and notice the difference in sounds. Owl Eyes. Open up your field of vision. Look straight ahead. Hold both arms out at length, either side of you. Keep your hands about ear height. Wiggle your fingers until; still looking ahead; you can see them on the edges of your field of vision. Fox Feet. You may want to try this now or wait until you have already tried a few Wild Sense walks. It will take a little practice. With the fox walk you are moving carefully and deliberately. You will make less sound as you take notice of each foot placement. This enables you to blend into and become part of your surroundings. You will see more and be able to get closer to wildlife as you become more skilled. Thicker heavy soles may make it more challenging to get it right, but you can still try it. Your steps should be much shorter than usual. As you contemplate on these thoughts begin to realise that you are not a spectator of all that is around you but a participant.

Pilot award for secondary schools launched

Sustrans are currently piloting an exciting new award scheme for secondary school pupils aged 11-16 to help develop the confidence and skills to travel actively and independently by walking, scooting and cycling. There is often a sharp drop off in the levels of physical activity of young people, particularly when moving from primary to secondary school, during the onset of adolescence and when leaving secondary school. The award aims to counteract this, by keeping teenagers active, and setting life-long good habits. Pupils can progress and achieve three levels of award; Bronze, Silver and Gold. At each level pupils complete challenges in seven key areas, including ‘Active Journeys’, ‘Equipment’, ‘Journey Planning’ and ‘Promotion of Active Travel’. Sustrans are looking for secondary schools to register their interest in the award, ready for the official launch next year. Register your interest now.

New briefing paper from HM Government ‘What

works in schools to increase physical activity’ This briefing paper is for head teachers, college principals, staff

working in education settings, directors of public health and wider partners. More and more evidence is demonstrating the link between physical activity, academic attainment and attention; a summary of the evidence is available in the report.

Being physically active also promotes physical and emotional wellbeing and children are more likely to carry an active habit into adulthood. Seven evidence based principles have been developed, linked to Ofsted. The first of these is looked at in more detail on the next page.

‘What works in schools to increase physical activity’ continued…

Principle 1: Deliver multi-component interventions;

• Curricular learning (teaching about the importance of physical activity through PSHE and across the curriculum)

• Culture, ethos and environment

• Engagement of the wider community and families

Link to Ofsted

The ‘outstanding’ grade descriptors for ‘overall effectiveness’ within the school inspection handbook includes the following: “the school’s thoughtful and wide-ranging promotion of pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and their physical wellbeing enables pupils to thrive” (p.37).

Effectiveness of leadership and management is a key judgement within the Ofsted evaluation schedule. They will consider the design, implementation and evaluation of the curriculum as well as how well the school supports the formal curriculum with extra-curricular opportunities, specifically: “opportunities for pupils to extend their knowledge and understanding and to improve their skills in a range of artistic, creative and sporting activities” (p38).

Putting PE at the heart of a child’s education

Primary School teachers across the country now have access to resources developed by the University of Bedfordshire that provide an innovative way of teaching physical education to children. With the intention of inspiring youngsters to take part in and enjoy physical activity, the core of the idea is to place themes around exercise, such as role playing as a superhero to improve strength and flexibility. Bedfordshire’s newly-devised lesson plans are tailored directly towards placing physical literacy at the centre of the curriculum with clear connections to other curricular subjects. In essence the teachers integrate lessons on, for example history, and use physical education to bring this to life with children pretending to crawl through pyramids or escape from dinosaurs.
