REPORT OF THE I.Q.A.C.

H.V.DESAI COLLEGE OF COMMERCE, ARTS AND SCIENCE, PUNE 2

ACADEMIC YEAR - 2006-2007.

PART –A

H.V. Desai College of Commerce, Arts and Science, Pune-02 followed the action plan

prepared in the previous year. The Objective was to attain the upliftment of the academic and

administrative standard of the college. The IQAC of this college prepared an action plan for the

academic year 2006-07 aiming at the enhancement of the academic and other qualities of the

college are as below:

Activities Planned:

1. To initiate new academic programmes for Arts, Commerce and Science faculties.

2. To plan the teaching programmes and the working schedule of each department.

3. To organize expert lecture series, seminars & workshops.

4. To motivate teachers and students for undertaking research projects.

5. To motivate students to participate in various curricular and extracurricular activities.

6. To Plan Remedial Teaching Programmes for the weaker and advanced learners.

7. To organize camps, lectures, presentation and seminars etc. for community services.

8. To appoint the required teaching / non-teaching staff.

9. To improve library facilities and services.

10. To undertake the assessment of teachers by students.

11. To update computer facilities and increase them as per requirement.

12. To provide financial assistance to the needy students.

13. To organize Parents‟ & Alumni Association‟s meetings.

14. To provide Health Services to the students and staff.

15. To extend the best sports facilities to the students.

16. To provide guidance & counseling to the students for seeking jobs / employments.

17. To organize Camps / Presentation for employment.

1. ACTIVITIES REFLECTING THE GOALS AND OBJECTIVES OF

THE INSTITUTION.

A) TO ADVANCE THE CAUSE OF LOWER INCOME GROUP AND AMONG

STUDENTS COMING FROM TRADITIONAL BUSINESS SECTIONS :

Students belonging to middle and lower income group & also from traditional

business sections were given priorities during the admissions.

No discrimination was observed among the students about their educational,

social, financial & cultural backgrounds.

B) TO PROVIDE AN ENVIRONMENT THAT FOSTERS CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT

AND INNOVATION WITH TECHNICAL SUPPORT AND FACULTY TO ENHANCE

C) TO INCULCATE IN STUDENTS THE NEED OF SELF EMPLOYMENT AND THE VALUE

OF DIGNITY OF LABOUR :

Besides all the faculties in this college, the N.S.S. Units has attempted for inculcating

the need of self employment and the value of dignity of labour in students.Various

activities were undertaken by them in this year as below:

A Seminar on “Emerging Careers in Aviation and Hospitality Management” was

organized in association with the “Air Hostess Academy,” Pune on 10.10.2006.

Mr. Mithare and Dr. Gugale took initiative for this activity.

Several staff members delivered lectures on various topics in the N.S.S. Winter Camp.

Principal Dr. C.N. Rawal inspired the students to undertake a project on

“Declining Phase of Copper Industry,” on 31.12.2006.

Some competitions were organized by Mr. Shirode during the Entrepreneur Week

(February 2007).

One Day Seminar was organized by the Dept. of Com. On “Marketing” – Covering the

following topics:

a) How to write a C.V.

b) Globalization & its Challenges.

c) Orchid & Idli Talk Show.

Organization of a One Day Workshop on “Samarth Bharat Abhiyan,” on 17/2/2007 by

Mr. Panasare.

The N.S.S. Unit organized a few One Day Camps in the college for Beautification of

the College Campus, Tree Plantation etc.

A Ten Day Special Winter Camp was organized at Narayanpur, Dist. Pune.

D) TO PROVIDE A SOUND ACADEMIC BASE FOR OVERALL DEVELOPMENT

OF PERSONALITY FOR A SUCCESSFUL CAREER :

The college took efforts to make the academic base stronger. The object

of making the overall development of personality of students is always carefully

thought of .

Department of Physics

A study tour was arranged by the Dept of Physics to Giant Meterwave Radio-

Transmitter (GMRT), Khodad on 22/1/2007 and to the School of Energy Studies

University of Pune on 3/2/2007.

Participation of students of Dept of Physics in Project Competitions at District &

University Level.

Science Association of our college organized a project exhibition.

The Inter Collegiate Research Project Competitions , ‘Avishkar’ was organized

in association with University of Pune. Dr.Mohite, Head, Department of Physics,

worked as a Team Manager on 29th

& 30th Dec 2007.

A Guest lecture on , „Science and Human Values‟ was organized for the science

students by Dr.L.A Patil, member Management Council , North Maharashtra University

on 29/1/2007.

Research Projects of the Faculty of Science Dept were funded by University of Pune

and the U.G.C.

Dr Mohite, Head, Dept of Physics initiated several talks and delivered lectures as a

Resource Person at All India Radio, North Maharashtra University, P.V.P College

Pravara Nagar, Kolvan Dist.-Nashik .

Dr. Pansare participated in the following workshops and seminars:-

National Conference on Nanotechnology at Mahatma Phule College, Pimpri on

Workshop on „Evaluation of Question Papers‟ for T.Y.B.Sc. Physics at

Mr.Bhalekar of this dept. is perusing the Ph.D .

Mrs. Ambre has registered herself for M.Phil.

Department of Microbiology :

Dept of Microbiology organized a students visit at „Parvati Water Purification Plant‟

& Pune Municipal Corporation‟s Water and Sewage Treatment Plant at Kalyaninagar.

T.Y.B.Sc. students were taken to Katraj Dairy & K. E. M. Hospital, Pune.

The Dept also organized a Two Day Workshop on „Anemia Causes Effects and

Remedies‟ under the Quality Improvement Programme of University of Pune.

A Guest lecture of Dr. Mrs.Bhadbade, Vice Principal, A.G.College , Pune, was

organized on „Degradation of Pesticides‟ for T. Y. B.Sc. Students .

Research project entitled „ Microbiological Analysis of Drinking Water in & around

Pune City‟ was granted by University of Pune by providing a financial assistance of

Rs.2,00,000 (Rs. Two lacks only). Mrs. R.B. Patwardhan has been working as a

Principal Investigator.

Department of Botany :

Dept.of Botany had a Students Educational Excursions at Empress Garden, Pune on

20/9/2007, Panshet, on 7/10/2007and Polyhouse and Bio Fertilizer Unit at

Agricultural College,Pune on 15/1/2007.

A Botanical Tour to Khanapur and Panshet for F. Y. B.Sc. students was organized on

07/10/2007.

Educational Tour to Shrivardhan and Harihareshwar was arranged on 19th

& 20th

Jan

2007 for S.Y.B.Sc. students.

A Seminar on „Taxonomy of Angiosperm‟ was organized for S.Y.B.Sc. students on

13/9/2007.

Guest lecturer by Dr.Sujata Bhargava, Dept of Botany, 07/10/2007 under the Quality

Improvement Programme of the University of Pune.

A Workshop on „How to Grow Indoor Plants‟ by Dr. P.V.Patil, Associate Professor,

College of Horticulture, Pune, was organized on 22/12/2007.

ARTS FACULTY

Depatrment of Political Science:-

Film show, slide show, visit to Museums were organized.

Mock Annual General Meeting of the Municipal Corporation was organized by

Garware College. Our students participated in the activity .

Miss. Chaitali Bangad, Revati Kale & Smita Jawale participated in Elocution

Competition organized by Ramkrishna More College, Akurdi.

A documentary on „Special Economic Zone‟ was organized for the students.

An exhibition on „Eternal Gandhi‟ organized by Birla Group at the „Convention

Centre‟, Pune was visited by our students.

A Remedial Course was organized for the weaker students for Eight Days.

Students were inspired to undertake projects on Anti -Terrorism , Suicides of Farmers,

Drought Hit Areas, Politics of Water, Indo-Pak Relations, Elections etc.

A Lecture of Dr.Ajit Bhagwan (Ismail Law College, Satara ) was organized on

„Contribution of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar in the Constitution of India‟, on

17/12/2006.

Participation in Research Project Competition, „Avishkar‟ organized by the University

of Pune.

Students participated in making the Voter‟s List of Pune District organized

by Dept. of Political Science, Pune University.

The Films, „Veer Savarkar‟ & „Making of Mahatma‟ were shown to the students.

Active participation of students in State Level Seminar organized by Garware

College Pune , on 5,6, & 7th

Feb 2007.Six of our participates were awarded for the

their best performance.

Our students participated in the „Mock Parliament‟ organized by S.P College Pune on

16/2/2007.

An International Seminar on Religion and Politics organized by Prof. Ramkrushna

More College, Akurdi, was attended by our students on 18/2/2007.

Department of History:-

The students of this department visited Maharashtra Sahitya Parishad, Vishrambaug

Wada, Bharat Itihas Sanshodhan Mandal, Pune under the guidance of Mr. G. D. Raut.

Other Activities :-

Students were guided to use the reference books such as National Geography, World

Encyclopedia, World Environmental Encyclopedia.

Visit to the Okiyama Garden was arranged for the students.

Students visited Observatory on the world Science day.

Students visited the Taljai Hill.

To understand population Geography, students visited the Temples, Mosques

& Gurudwaras.

Slides shows were organized for the students on „Environment, Forest, Land Structures

etc.

Students of this department visited Maharashtra Sahitya Parishad, Pune Marathi

Granthalaya & Jaykar Library of Pune University.

A lecture of Mrs. Suhasini Joglekar was arranged for the students on „Report Writing

for Media‟.

Students participated in National Youth Festival under the guidance of

Dr. P.P. Ghodke.

A lectures of Mr. Tukaram Dighe and Mr. Tushar Bhosale were organized on „Marathi

Calligraphy‟.

A Lecture of Dilip Waghmare was organized on „Introduction to Specialization &

Technical Concepts in Marathi.

During the Expert Lecture Series, Following lectures were organized:-

A Remedial Course of ten days was organized the for weaker students by the

Department.

Participation in the Intercollegiate Research Project Competition, „Avishkar 2006‟.

Two projects were presented by the Students.

Participation of students in the Intercollegiate Short –Story Reading Competition

organized by Garware College of Commerce Pune.

Film shows on „Comedy of Errors and Hamlet‟ were organized for the students.

E: - TO HAVE COMMUNITY ORIENTATION AND CIVIC RESPONSIBILITIES IN

THEIR OUTLOOK.

The College organized following activities for the community orientation and Civic

Responsibilities:-

Publication of Wall Magazine between 8/9/06 - 10/12/06.

Lecture by the staff academy on, „Spiritual Management‟ on 10/11/06.

Collection of funds for the deprived drought affected villagers of Pethewadi in

Dec 2006.

A Special Winter Camp was organized by the NSS Unit in Jan 2006.

Students‟ Counselling by the Dept. of Economics Feb 2006.

Science Faculty:-

Visit to the School of Blind Students at Kothrud in July 2006.

Organization of Anand Vyankhanmala Dec 2006.

A Workshop on Samarth Bharat Abhiyaan was organized on 15/2/2007.

Around 30 participants from different colleges participated.

A Two day Workshop on „Anemia –Causes Effects and Remedies‟ was organized by

Dept. of Micro-Biology.

A Research Project entitled „Microbiological Analysis of Drinking Water in and around

City‟ has been undertaken. Pune University has granted funds of

Rs. 2 lakhs.

The Dept. of Botany formed a study group of twenty students .They were taught

Universal Human Values for the personal development of students.

Arts Faculty:-

The Traffic Awareness Programme was organized . Booklets on Traffic Rules and

Regulations were Published and circulated in association with the Pune Police.

The faculty organized an activity of distribution clothes and sweets to the people

from Shivajinagar slum area. During the activity, Mrs Inamdar, Mr. Pandare,

Mrs. Dhobale, Dr. Ghodake, Mr. Bagdane had personal talks and counselling to the

people. Students of this faculty participated in the campaign of „Preparation of

Electoral List‟ of Pune City.

NSS Unit:-

The Unit organized a Blood Donation Camp on 4/8/2006 in association with Blood

Bank of Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital Pune. Sixty Two Volunteers donated blood.

Participants were offered lunch after the lectures by Prin. Dr. C. N. Rawal and others

regarding the Civic Responsibilities.

A lecture for NSS volunteers on Yuva Maitree , by Shree Harish Sadani, Secretary

of MAWA, Mumbai was delivered on 11/8/2006.

A lecturer on “The Role of Men in Exploitation of Women” was organized on

18/8/2006.

A Lecture on „Oil Conservation by Mr. M. V. Apte, was organized on 22/8/2006.

Forty volunteers performed the role as Police Mitra during the „Ganpati Festival‟ from

2nd

to 6th

Sept 2006 .During this period, the film on Management of Solid Garbage,

Prevention of AIDS, Natural farming and Health Awareness were shown to the

devotees of Lord Ganesha between 7.p.m to 11.p.m.

The Special Winter Camp was organized at Shrikshetra Narayanpur Dist. Pune. from

21st to 30

th Dec. 2006.

One Volunteer of this unit participated in the State Level N.S.S. Camp at Hivare Bazar

from 24th

to 30/9/2006.

F} TO DEVELOP AN ORIENTATION TOWARDS THE NATIONAL & GLOBAL NEEDS AS

RESPONSIBLE CITIZENS:-

Teaching, Non Teaching Staff and Students were provided necessary orientation towards

the National & global needs to make themselves more responsible Citizens. Following

activities were undertaken by the college:-

Study Tours and Visits to Vidhan Bhavan, Mantralaya, and some Charity Institutions

were organized.

Traffic Awareness Programme, in association with the Pune City Police was organized.

Blood Donation Camps were organized.

The „Earn and Learn‟ scheme worked hard in this year. Under this scheme, Tree

Plantations and Maintenance, Laboratory Work etc. were organized. Around 22

students were offered the jobs under the scheme.

N.S.S. Volunteers of this College participated in the Shrama Samskar Camp held at

Anandvan of Dr. Baba Amte. This activity was organized by the „Students‟ Welfare -

Department of Pune University.

Aids Awareness Rally was organized in association with Information and Technology

Deptt. on „International Aids Day‟.

Exhibition on „Environment‟ was organized.

During the Anand Vyakhyanmala a known Social Worker Mrs. Sindhutai Sapkal

delivered a Lecture on the „Success Story of the Orphanage‟.

Mr. K.K. Bagdane was felicitated for his Social work by Nehru Yuva Kendra, Pune.

2. NEW ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES INITIATED :

The College admitted the External Candidates for FY, SY, & T.Y.Com., under the

Distance Education Programme and offered them the best possible teaching

programmes and prepared them for Examinations. Most of these Students are

draperied of admissions anywhere or they are working with some organizations, so

cannot attend any College regularly.

The College submitted Proposals in the University for M.Sc.( Comp. Sc.)

Course and Management Courses.

Computer Science Dept. initiated a programme for F.Y. B.Com. Students.

3. INNOVATIONS IN CURRICULAR DESIGN AND

TRANSACTION:

Meetings / Workshops organized by other colleges were attended by some

faculty members.

4. INTERDISCIPLINARY PROGRAMME STARTED:

A course, „Environmental Science‟ was introduced to the students of Science,

Commerce & Arts.

5. EXAMINATION REFORMS IMPLEMENTED:

Question Banks have been prepared by Teachers for Students.

Tutorial & Test Series are conducted.

Term End Examinations have been conducted by the College in Oct. 2006. All

Teachers followed the University Pattern for setting question papers and also

assessment of answer books.

Discipline was maintained during the Examinations.

Some Teachers participated in the work of University Examinations on Vigilance

Committees, Paper Setters, Modulators, and Examiners.

The College has successfully carried out the Central Assessment Programme of SY /

TY B.Com. Examinations of Pune University in October-Novermber 2006. All these

activities have helped the Teaching and Non-Teaching Staff to make necessary

changes in Examinations.

Dr. Gugale presented a Research Paper in the International Conference in Mumbai on

23rd to 25th Jan. 2007.

Mr. S. M. Hande had a presentation in the National Conference held at Kalyan on 27th

to 29/12/2006.

Minor Research Project entitled, „Photochemical Regioselective Bromination of

Aeronautics using N- Bromosuinmide‟ was sanctioned by the U.G.C. with the amount

of funds of Rs. 85,000/-.

Dr. K. C. Mohite, Head, Deptt. of Physics worked as a Team Manager of AVISHKAR-

2006, organized by the University of Pune held at Nagpur University and won the

Overall Championship Trophy.

Dr. Mohite has been a recognized Guide for M Phil., Ph.D.

Dr. Mohite has been working with Educational Institutions, R & D and Industries in the

field of Power Generation and Energy Conservation.

Dr. Pansare was a Co-coordinator for the Project Competition for science students.

Dr. Pansare participated in the National Conference on Nanotechnology at Mahatma

Phule College,Pimpri on 27th & 28th Jan. 2007. He also participated in the National

Workshop on „Nanomaterial Synthesis‟ organized by the Department of Physics.

University of Pune on 7-9 November 2006.

Mr. Bhalekar is pursuing his Ph.D at School of Energy Studies, University of Pune.

Ms. Ambre has registered herself for M.Phil. (Physics).

sanctioned by U.O.P. and also funded Rs. 3,00,000/-

Research Project on „Evaluation of actioxidance Activities of Vegetables‟ was

sanctioned by U.O.P. for Mr. Hande S.M. with the funded Rs. 1,50,000/-.

Microbiological Analysis of Drinking Water in and around Pune City was granted and

funded by U.O.P. for the Deptt. of Microbiology.

The administration section of the college has been fully computerized. Required maintenance

and purchase of new equipments was undertaken. Necessary training to the administrative staff

was given by the teaching faculty of B.Sc. (Computer Science)

As a result, the process of admission, examination result, issuing of certificates and

other students related issues became easy and quick to handle.

26. INCREASE IN THE INFRASTRUCTURAL FACILITIES :-

The present infrastructure is adequate for the existing courses. No addition was made to it.

Instead, necessary maintenance was regularly undertaken. Entire infrastructure is being fully

utilized by the college.

Necessary up gradation of the computers in the office, computer labs and different departments

was regularly undertaken by the competent authority.

Medical checkup of all F.Y.Students was held in the first term.

Blood Donation Camp was organized on 4/8/2006 is association with the Blood Bank

of Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital Pune.

The Blood Group Checking Camp was held by the Department of Microbiology.

A Workshop on „Anemia – Causes Effects and Remedies‟ was held for two days.

Seventy five students participated in it. The Hemoglobin count was measured of the

participants during the workshop.

Wall Paper on “Food for Mind” was displayed regularly giving information about

general knowledge of Health Awareness by Mr. Vikram Gujar.

33. PERFORMANCE IN SPORTS ACTIVITIES:-

The Gymkhana Committee of the college has been active all the time.

During this year, the committee undertook following activities:-

Participated in 17 sports events in the Intercollegiate Sports Competitions which began

on 27/7/2006.

Our students performed very well in Kabaddi, Cricket, Athletics and Marathon.

Ms. Apurva Amadekar, F.Y.B.Sc. (Computer Science) was selected in the Basket Ball

Team of Maharashtra for all India Basket Ball Competitions.

Mr. Dnyaneshwar Karat, F.Y.B.Sc. Obtained the second rank in Half Marathon

Competitions. (21 kms.- running)

Mr. Dnyaneshwar Karat, F.Y.B.Sc. also obtained second rank in Inter Collegiate

Ground Competitions. He was selected for the Pune City Team.

Kabaddi Team of the college reached to semi final in the Inter Collegiate Kabaddi

Competitions Ganesh Kedari and Deppak Balawadkar excelled very well in this event.

Cricket team of the college reached to semi final in the Inter collegiate cricket

competition Mr. Nikhil Jadhav, Atul Pawar, T.Y.B.Com., Nitesh Patel, S.Y.B.Com.,

Monish Gadhiya, S.Y.B.Sc. and others performed well in this event.

Outstanding sports person were provided additional sports facilities.

They were provided with sports kits, Jerkins, Tracksuits etc.

Their outstanding performance was appreciated immediately after their achievements.

The Guidance and Counseling Cell organized lectures and presentations of some

known persons from the industry and academic fields.

During these activities, the students received significant guidance for their career

making. Psychological counseling was given to the needy students on individual and

groups levels.

37. PLACEMENTS SERVICES PROVIDED TO STUDENTS:

The Placement Cell of the college organized lectures and presentations of some of the

industrial persons.

A Seminar on “Emerging Careers in Aviation and Hospitality Management” was

organized in association with the “Air Hostess Academy,” Pune on 10.10.2006.

38. DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES FOR NON-TEACHING STAFF :

A short term course related to computer use was organized for the non-teaching staff.

It helped them to be more user friendly and be aware of the advancement in computer

technology. It also help in giving better result in administrative work.

The college celebrated all the Days of National and International important.

The staff celebrated birthdays of all the staff members.

N.S.S. Volunteers provided services to the people during Ganapati festival.

Condolence meeting were held after death of relatives of some of the staff

members.

River Cleaning Activity was organized during the monsoon.

Some staff members donated their blood for the hospitalized relatives of other

staff members.

Some religious activities were organized.
