    OPERATION

SAVE A LIFESince 2009, the Pickens County YMCA has been focusing on reducing thedrowning rate in Pickens County and Northern Anderson County. Our goal has been to teach as many children as we can to swim,

as well as basic water safety.

In 2012, we taught 609 children to swim at the Easley and PickensYMCA; of which 219 children were taught for free. The local schools

refer need based children in the 2nd & 3rd grade to the Y and we teachthem water safety and swimming basics at no cost to them.

This initiative is funded by the Share the Spirit Fund. (See page 26)

We offevaluable services that many in our community need and want to be a part of such as afterschool and summer camp. As a non-prowe strive to serve everyone, regardless of their ability to pay. We raise money each year to fund what we call the Share the SpiriFund, which allocates money to those asking for help. WHAT IS YOUR Y STORY?Renee Clarks Story:

Most every day I drive by the Easley YMCA on Burns Road and smile. I smile because my family has experiencedmany blessings out of the after-school program for my two boys. The after-school program has positively impactedand strengthened our family. I enrolled Justin and Cameron into the afterschool care program when I first moved toEasley in 2008. As a single mom, I need the reassurance that my children will be in the right environment afterschool, since I was no longer able to be with them in the afternoons. Im a pretty determined parent to ensure mychildren have all the resources and love they need to grow according to Gods plan. And with lifes changes, I need asafe, loving, and morally strong child care program. I found this environment at the Easley YMCA. It was a toughadjustment for the boys initially, but our family is stronger today because of the compassion and mission of theYMCA to impact our community to lift families up in support when it is needed.

In 2012, I felt they were older and could handle the responsibility of staying home alone after school, so I disenrollethem from the YMCA. It wasnt a complete disaster, but I learned keeping children engaged no matter what the ageis critical. Cameron is in the middle after-school program and Justin, now in high school, volunteers to help withelementary age children every day after school. Cameron comes home with his homework finished, and talks of allthe details of the YMCA events. He comes home a happy boy and has developed great relationships with thecounselors. Justin comes home exhausted most days. He has learned the beginning skills of true leadership and harwork. All these blessings have come from the little facility up the road that loves children every afternoon. Thankyou to the leaders at the YMCA for loving my family!
