What's a Kayak● Small human-powered boat

● Use “Paddle,” not “Oar.”● Oars are attached on a boat to use the principle of

leverage (easy to move, but no freedom).● Paddle is not attached on a boat because of FREE

Maneuverability

Anyway, I said,

● “Kayaking is Good training to improve your ’Human’ skill of IT engineer!”● What do I mean?● Just a hobby?

● My opinion is:● Of course, we play kayak as hobby, but,● Kayaking (especially whitewater river running) has

very similar points with software developments● Mostly HUMAN SKILLs

Page 10: Play Kayak for good Engineer's Life!

Example:

Upper Kidu-river, MIE prefecture

Page 11: Play Kayak for good Engineer's Life!

SCARY?

YES, REALLY SCARE.Calm down, calm down, calm down...

Page 12: Play Kayak for good Engineer's Life!

Don't scare, LOOK and THINK!

Page 13: Play Kayak for good Engineer's Life!

Find your OWN route

Big drop andvery shallow...

There isa big rock!

It's my route(and succeed!)

Page 14: Play Kayak for good Engineer's Life!

Manage YOUR Risks● White water paddling is very nice training of

RISK MANAGEMENT (not for your mgr.)

1.Find ALL of risks you have

2.Classify which risks are acceptable

3.Then, decide which route is best for yourself.– The best routes are different for each people.– Paddling skill, kind of boat, mental (big factor),...

Can avoid? NOT SO SERIOUS SERIOUS (DEATH?)

Everyone (Not a risk)

Easy Acceptable (Fun!) Don't try!

Difficult Acceptable if you want Don't try!

Page 15: Play Kayak for good Engineer's Life!

More important thing:● Teamwork!Teamwork!

● given enough eyeballs, all risks are shallow.– Modified Linus's Law (bugs → risks)

● For good classification of risk, need many heads.● In trouble, your buddies will rescue each other.

– The trust braves you to beat risks!

Thinking, Judging, Trust and Success togetherThinking, Judging, Trust and Success togethermake very good teamwork, make very good teamwork,

It is exactly same as software developments, It is exactly same as software developments, isn't it?isn't it?

in nature, of course

● Fun, very fun.
