Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce Announces Destination Travel Website Redesign The Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce the re-launch of PleasureIslandNC.org, the destination travel website with a focus on over four hundred chamber member businesses located in Carolina Beach, Kure Beach, and the greater Wilmington NC area. The site is also a resource for information about chamber and area events, sights to see, and visitor information. Visitors to PleasureIslandNC.org will find a new look to greet them this spring. The Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce, the organization behind PleasureIslandNC.org, have created a redesign that provides a more dynamic look and functionality as well as helps promote member businesses, area events, and resources both on and off the island. The Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce is committed to supporting and promoting local businesses and to promoting Pleasure Island as a visitor destination and a great place to do business. The website redesign project strives to bring member businesses more to the forefront of the site, with opportunities for members to add detailed information about their business, including photos, coupons, or a menu for restaurants. Members will have control of their pages so they can add information as desired, such as special promotions or discounts, in addition to the basic contact information that is already included for each member. The Chamber has also added the opportunity for a more robust visitor experience. 2007 Officers Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce Announces Destination

Travel Website Redesign

The Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce is

pleased to announce the re-launch of PleasureIslandNC.org, the destination travel website

with a focus on over four hundred chamber member

businesses located in Carolina Beach, Kure Beach,

and the greater Wilmington NC area. The site is

also a resource for information about chamber and

area events, sights to see, and visitor information.

Visitors to PleasureIslandNC.org will find a new

look to greet them this spring. The Pleasure

Island Chamber of Commerce, the organization

behind PleasureIslandNC.org, have created a

redesign that provides a more dynamic look and

functionality as well as helps promote member

businesses, area events, and resources both on and off the island.

Carolina Beach, Kure Beach, and Historic Fort Fisher are the beach towns south of Wilmington, N.C. that

make up Pleasure Island. In addition to being vibrant, year-round communities, these North Carolina beach

towns are also popular vacation destinations for our neighbors in Raleigh, Fayetteville, Greensboro, Jackson-

ville, and other North Carolina cities and for our friends in the Midwest and northeast. The Pleasure Island

Chamber of Commerce is committed to supporting and promoting local businesses and to promoting Pleasure

Island as a visitor destination and a great place to do business.

The website redesign project strives to bring member businesses more to the forefront of the site, with opportunities for members to add detailed information about their business, including photos, coupons, or a

menu for restaurants. Members will have control of their pages so they can add information as desired, such

as special promotions or discounts, in addition to the basic contact information that is already included for

each member.

The Chamber has also added the opportunity for a more robust visitor experience. Visitors to PleasureIslandNC.org can browse through the Where to Eat, Where to Play, Where to Stay, and Local Busi-

ness directories and add any of the results to “My Visit.” They will be prompted to create an account where

they can save all of the hotel options, restaurants, and attractions that interest them to easily access again at

any time.

The Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce website is a comprehensive resource and guide to the Carolina

Beach, Kure Beach, and Historic Fort Fisher area in southeastern North Carolina. Chamber members are

based in Pleasure Island, Wilmington, Leland, Castle Hayne, and beyond. The website redesign was handled by

two local businesses and chamber members, Blu Zeus Interactive Marketing (Web Designer) and Wilmington

SEO (Coordination and Search Engine Optimization), both located in Wilmington, N.C. We would also like

to thank our contributing, local photographers Peter Doran, Jimmy Lippert and Paul Boroznoff for their fabu-

lous images.

The Pleasure Island 16th Annual Chowder Cook-Off

The Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce will be holding the 16th Annual Chowder Cook-Off on Saturday, April 14, 2012 at the Carolina Beach Lake.

The Chowder Cook Off is all about delicious food, good music, and family fun, so bring the kids along to this family-oriented event. Chefs from southeast North Carolina’s finest restaurants will prepare the region’s best seafood chowder recipes between the hours of 11:30am and 5:00pm. Folks can sample a taste of Cape Fear

during this friendly chowder competition held at Carolina Beach Lake Park in Carolina Beach. Children can enjoy the park’s playground and a Kidz Zone with face-painting, a giant inflatable slide and more. And for an

additional fee, there will be paddleboat rides for the entire family.

During the Chowder Cook-Off, enjoy live music by Mark Roberts and Breeze and chowder-tasting (and voting) between 11:30am and 4:00pm, but make sure to arrive early while the chowder is abundant.

Your job is to bring the family and your discerning palate to sample and vote on your favorite chowder. This daylong event includes live music, fun for the kids and of course, great food. So come to the beach for the

weekend and spend the day with us at this great party. Gates open at 11:30, admission is $5.00 for adults 12 & under free. For more information please call the Chamber at 910-458-8434 or email at

On a sunny, bright Wednesday evening on March 14th , the Members of the Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce got together at Pleasure Island Rentals and Shuckin’ Shack and were treated to oysters on the half shell, shrimp and clams along with ice cold beer and select wines for your enjoyment. Matt and Sean welcomed each and every Member as they arrived to the corner of Lake Park and Cape Fear to enjoy one of the best socials of the year. We had live music, laughter galore and overall a very good time. After the announcements by Chair Mike Worley, Jason Morgan walked away with his portion of the 50/50 Prize, while Matt & Sean donated their half to the Pleasure Island Life Guard Association. Ali of Havoc Board Sports and Chris Higgins of Artful Living Group both picked up a Step Up For Soldiers Backyard BBQ Poster. Diane Teasdale and Kim Foust both won $100 Gift Cards from Muscleworx. The Chamber provided two tickets to the Carolina

Beach Music Festival which was taken home by Larry Long, while Sharron Setterfield picked up a gift bag provided by the Checkered Church. Trudy Barnes took home a pair of tickets to the 1st Annual Bluegrass By The River to be held May

12, 2012. Thank you for coming and see you next month. Please enjoy a few select memories from this evening.

Spotlight On Business—The Dog House

We are pleased to introduce ourselves; Ron and Noël Stevens, as the owners of Island Hots. After six years of visiting Pleasure Island with family and friends and watching the improvements being made at Carolina Beach, we moved from Cary to our Wilmington home just across the bridge after we found ourselves in the position of accepting this exciting business opportunity and engaging in the fun Boardwalk atmosphere.

Island Hots opened for business on Thursday, March 8th. Our building has tropical island colors and a newly expanded outdoor area with tables and benches, built by Ron’s brother Ed, who is an important part of the business. Ron and Ed are running the place together and giving customers lots of jokes in between great service and excellent food.

Ron’s vision was hot dogs with fresh toppings, including his Island Relish; made with sweet red peppers, onions and jalapenos…it’s got zip without being HOT.

We have southern style chicken tenders, natural cut fries, beer battered onion rings, cold beer, root beer floats and old fashioned soft serve vanilla ice cream.

The courtyard will provide a great view of the fireworks on Thursday nights. For the season, our posted hours will be 11:00 am-9:00 pm or later.

Island Hots is located at 103A Cape Fear Blvd just behind the Gazebo and across from Artful Living Group so come visit us soon! So far we have had great reviews with many repeat customers. We look forward to serving Carolina Beach for a long time to come!

crease parking rates at surface parking lots and metered spaces remains. Daily parking rates were recently raised from $7 to $8 and hourly parking rates increased from $1.25 to $1.50. Paid

KURE BEACH APPROVES AGREEMENT FOR COMPLETION OF THE OCEAN FRONT PARK

The Kure Beach Town Council voted in a special meeting on Thursday, March 29, 2012 to accept a takeover agreement with The Gray Casualty and Surety Company of Metairie, Louisiana (bonding company) to complete construction of the Ocean Front Park project and is waiting final signature from the bonding company.

In December of 2011, the Town Council terminated the original contractor for the project and has been in negotiations with the bonding company since that time to reach an agreement and resume work on the project.

As part of the takeover agreement, the bonding company has hired Landmark Corporation of Johnston City, Tennessee as the completion contractor. Landmark Corporation is licensed in 48 states and is experienced in finishing projects where there has been a change of contractor. Existing unacceptable work on the site will be removed and rebuilt.

The Town expects Landmark Corporation to begin work on or around April 9th and complete the project by November 13, 2012. The first part of the project to be completed will be the crossover and the boardwalk so that full beach access will be available as soon as possible. The Town regrets that construction must occur during the busy summer months and will endeavor to keep Atlantic Avenue as open and available as possible during this time.

The Ocean Front Park project consists of an open air pavilion for concerts and other events, a public re-stroom, small playground for tots, walking path, swings and benches. The park site is located at 105 Atlantic Avenue in the heart of the Town and across the street from the ocean. Also as part of the project, the board-walk from K to L Avenue will be replaced and four wooden platforms will extend from the boardwalk towards the dunes. The platforms will have swings for viewing the ocean. A fifth platform will be an ADA conforming viewing area. A storm water infiltration system will be installed on the park site along with rain gardens and a cistern. Atlantic Avenue will be repaved and pervious pavers will be added in the parking areas. The Town Council envisions the park site as a way to preserve beach front property for the public and enhance the quality of life for the citizens and visitors for generations to come.

Entertainment will be provided throughout the day by The Mark Roberts Band as well as a Kids Zone and a variety of food vendors. At only $5 per adult ticket and free admission for children 12 yrs old and under, this is the perfect time to spend the day with the whole family enjoying a first class event!

Speaking of fun things to do, mark your calendars now and make plans to attend the 1st Annual

This festival is going to be one that families remember for a long time!

We are also gearing up for the 27th Annual Carolina Beach Music Festival coming on Saturday, June 2nd. We have the industries top three bands, (The Craig Woolard Band, Band Of Oz and Jim Quick and Coastline) bringing you the very best in Carolina Beach Music at this year’s festival. And keeping with tradition, the weekend kicks off on Friday night with The Holiday Band and the Shag Contest on Saturday night following the festival. If last year’s attendance was any indication of what to expect this year, this event is going to be HUGE! Be sure to visit our newly designed website to get more information on these and all of the other events happening throughout the year.

Keep in mind that the free weekly Fireworks and gazebo entertainment begin on Friday, May 25th and run until August 31st! All of this is just a sample of the great events that happen on Pleasure Island and make our area one of the most visited beaches on the East Coast. With all of that said, I would like to thank Gail, Greg, all of the volunteers, the Town of Carolina Beach, the Town of Kure Beach and last but certainly not least, the local businesses that sponsor these events. It takes a lot of planning, time and money to provide the quality events that we are known for! There are numerous opportunities available for you to get involved and help us make 2012 the BEST!

Sincerely,

Mike Worley 2012 Chairman-Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce
