I made a model of a drinking vessel

and an accessory that goes with it. I

made this for my product design class. I

named it Luana which means relax in

Hawaiian. I made this drinking vessel

with a resort by the beach in mind. The

purpose of this vessel is to help the user

relax and enjoy their time sipping their

drink. I picked the color blue and white

because I think it helps people feel calm

because it is not aggresive.

In the early concept, I sketched a

few different ideas. The idea is to make

a drinking vessel for people that are on

vacation in a resort by the beach. They

want something unique and I thought of

different ways people hold their drink.

I used polyurethane model for my

model. First I made the drinking vessel.

I cut out the basic shape and sanded

it to get the curves. I used a bandsaw

to cut, and a beltsander to sand the

curves. Then I used sandpapers from

80 to 200 grits. To hollow out the inside,

I used a dremmel and smoothed it out

with sandpapers too.

For the accessory, I thought of

making a spoon to help the user mix

in sugar or other mixes to their drink.

I made a few of the models with fimo

clay and decided that they are not fit for

my drinking vessel. Then I went back to

the sketching stage and came up with

a small plate instead. I borrowed the

shape of my vessel and made a plate

for sugar and lemons. I used the same

process with the vessel to make the

plate.

After I finished sanding down both

models, I primered them. I used a spray

primer so I can get that smooth finish. I

used a white primer because I wanted

a really soft color for my vessel. I ended

up leaving the plate with the primer

color because I was satisfied with the

whiteness it has with it. I sprayed the

vessel a really light blue.

I made this lamp in my rapid

prototyping class. The assignment was

to make a minimum of five feet tall

luminating object. We are also suggested

to use maple applecore plywood. I was

given the whole semester to finish this

assignment. I named it Lahar because

it reminds me of lava lamps, and lahar

means lava in Indonesian.

As an inspiration, I looked at a lot

of buildings and fashion. I was inspired

by how buildings were not just boxes,

and some were even fluid. I wanted to

make something that is not just a box.

As for the fashion, I realized that I really

like how different fabrics have different

feelings to it. So I tried shining light

through different types of fabrics, and I

like how it sets a mood. I made a few

different sketches to see how I would

want my lamp to be. I decided I want to

make a mood light that is also attractive

when the surrounding light is on.

I used foamcore to make my first

full scale model. It showed me the real

size of my model and I realized that it

was too big. So I slimmed it down a little

so it wouldn’t look so bulky. The full

scale model also helped me see the

real height, and I decided to make it

taller than me and I made it to be

around six feet. After I was done with

the scaling, I gathered a few different

fabrics and picked the combination that

I like. I also went back to the drawing

board and simplified my lamp to one

section only. I made a full scale model

of the simplified version out of MDF.

For the final model I used

aplecore plywood and I used the CNC

router to cut out the parts. I sanded all

the sides with sandpaper up to 400

grits. I used a drill press to drill a hole

for my stand. For the lights, I used 15

metres of warm white LED lights. I

twirled it around a dowel. After I

assembled all the parts, I used around

six coats of tung oil to finish it.

This is another project that I did

for a class. The object of this project is

to design a new package for fluorescent

lightbulbs. The package has to be able

to hold three lightbulbs. The package

has to be sturdy enough that it protects

the lightbulbs, and it has to be made out

of cardboard.

III. Squiggles

Page 14: Portfolio

14

I made sketches of different ways

to hold the lightbulbs. Another design

drive that I came up with is that it is

space efficient, and a litte bit open while

still protective enough of the lightbulbs. I

came up with the idea of perforations so

that each section can be torn off when

one of the lightbulbs is used.

To get the exact measurement for

the packaging, I wrapped the lightbulb

with cardboard and marked it. I made

sure to not go against the grain of the

cardboard so it doesn’t crease. I cut

little holes with an exacto knife for the

perforations. I used a little mock up of

my texts on a little piece of paper and

tried taping it to different parts of the

package. I used my first model as a

template for my final model.

15

For the final model, I printed out

my logo and came up with the tag “The

eco-friendly squiggly ones”. I noticed

that people refer to these lightbulbs as

the “squiggly” ones.

Another project that I had to do for

a class is a shelf. The aim is to make

something that will improve our living

space. I picked to make a shelf because

I noticed that some of my things doesn’t

have any specific place they belong in.

So I want this to be a place for those

things. I personalized it so it goes well

with my apartment. I picked the colors

that matches with the rest of the room,

and made the size big enough for my

things, and small enough to fit between

my couch and my TV area.

17

I knew I wanted to make a storage

area for my things, so I sketched a few

different items. I went with a shelf that

goes well with my personality. I wanted

to make this a personal thing because

I am going to use it in my apartment. I

made the top wavy to give it a personality.

For the initial model, I made it out

of foamcore and glued it with hot glue. I

made a quarter scale model, and cut it

with exacto knife. I noticed some wrong

calculations when I made this model, so

I recalculated the measurements. The

model was useful in helping me decide

how many sections I want it to be.

18

For the final model I used plywood

and I nailed them. I used the bandsaw

to cut the shapes including the wave

for the backboard. After I sanded all the

pieces with sandpaper, I nailed all the

pieces together. Then I used primer to

prep the wood. I painted parts of the

shelf with Behr paint, triple coating it to

make sure everything is covered. I took

an “S” letter and taped it to the back

board with a double sided tape. For the

boxes, I looked for a regular box and

painted it the same colors as the letter.

VI. SolidWorks Examples These are my SolidWorks

examples. A couple of them are from

my SolidWorks class. The left assign-

ment was to make a water container

with a logo on it. I made a water jug that

comes with several different colors.The

middle assignment was to make a chair,

and I made a kid chair. The very right is

a sample of a ballpoint pen cap.

Page 20: Portfolio

I made this 2010 calendar for my

class. The goal was to make four pages

of calendar. I used Photoshop to edit

and put this together.

This menu is another project for

class. The object is to redesign a menu

from a restaurant of our choice. We are

given the freedom to cut anything on the

menu as we wish. I used Illustrator to

put this menu together. I wanted to keep

the dark romantic feeling that they had

on their original menu, but I made it as

simple as possible without cutting too

much things from the menu.
