Flora&Stone

Page 7: PORTFOLIO

3

The power of a seed is so strong that life can grow almost everywhere, in the soil, in the narrow cleft between two stones, or even on the eternal ice cover of the North Pole.

Everytime when I see a little flower grow and bloom from the stone cleft, I feel that life is all around me and will always go on.

The rock is hard, the flora is tender, but sometimes tenderness can go over hardness, and the two match each other perfectly.

That's why I made this cup. It's born for a flower, a grass, or a seed of a little life being.

Formed by clay strips, the pottery becomes softer and more lively.

The flowers can stretch out from the interspace of the upper part of it, and the bottom part contains water or soil.

When the stem of a flower is shorter than the other flowers, the interspace will be suitable for it.

Other kinds of little flora can also be insert here in harmony.

It's a little MONSTER that loves pens, pencils and anything that falls into its big belly.

It loves games!Just put a yummy pencil into one of its mouth, then find a way out of another one. When you succeed to fullfill all its mouths with the pens, you WIN! But if you can not find the right way, hmmm, all your pens will become its big meal!

I designed the location and the direction of these holes, so that all the pens can be sticked in in a certain way and form a complicated network.

Normally the pens are all contained in its "belly", but sometimes we just need a twist, a twist of the normal way of daily things, to turn a lifeless object into a little game pal.

So just play a game and interact with the little monster!

DanceI am inspired by the famous painting "DANCE" of Matisse. In this picture people are dancing hand in hand with passion and power, the collided colors make the rhythm stronger and more infectious.

Another inspiring resource is this old Chinese character, which is written as " 舞 " in the modern Chinese. Chinese character is pictographic, from the character above we can see a man holding two bunches of bull tails. I can even imagine how the man dancing in a banquet along with the strong rhythm of drum and horn.

I made several dancer from this character and connect them with each other, or rather to say, they ARE each other. They dance together, like people dancing in the painting of Matisse. They dance in various body gestures and stretch out as possible as they can.

In the nature, the branches and root of a tree, a family of thousands of ants, they all connect and "dance" together.

It's a model of a lobby for celebrations such as wedding, birthday or other ceremonies.

In this design I use:a. double walls to decrease the incoming sunlight intensityb. many windows in various shape and location to create beautiful light spotsc. a curved wall to scatter and soften the light

1. The double walls serve as 2 aisles on both sides of the lobby, through which the guests can get into the main lobby.Because the aisle is more narrow than the main lobby, the light spots are the strongst in the 2 aisles, so that the people can enjoy the magic of sunshine when they go through it.

2. The main lobby in the centre becoms more and more narrow when the bride or the people who are congratulated step in further, to make them feel the journey longer and gradually get peaceful.

3. The 2 small rooms serve as restroom or meeting room.

The curved wall and the ceiling.

a. On one side of the small room is a big window, but on the other side there are no windows, because the light in the end of the main lobby should be tender and quiet.

b. The sunlight comes in through the small windows on the top and after the scattering it turns softer.

Side facade of the model

The windows on the double walls are related to each other, they partly block each other, to decrease the strength of light and to make the change of light more various.

Page 20: PORTFOLIO

The sunlight in the main lobby is obviously weaker than it in the aisle.

The doors on the inner wall.

In the dawn or when the night falls, the light becomes softer, and the light spots are also different from the daytime.

Page 21: PORTFOLIO

Sunny DayThe light spots are the strongst in the aisles.

After a shower of sunshine, people step into the main lobby and turn more peaceful in an darker space.

The beautiful light spots on the wall.

1. There are many benches in my campus, and in a long time they stay still at this spot in the photo. These benches are MOVABLE, in 3 types of SIMPLE SHAPEs and can be GROUPED for different usage, but at this spot thay are only used as tables and seats, and are never moved for many years.

2. One day things are changed. A drama club moved the benches to the plaza as the seats for audience.

3. After that the benches are moved here and there, grouped in different forms for relevant usages.

BACKGROUND

Page 30: PORTFOLIO

EXPERIMENT&RESULTs

It's interesting that when the benches are once moved, they are always moved everywhere by people for their own purposes.Further more, with 3 simple shapes the benches can be adapted in various occations and be freely applied.

On this basis we conducted a small experiment:STEP 1: We moved 3 benches to the grassland, then grouped and fixed them as in the photo on the right hand.STEP 2: When we moved the benches, a small girl was attracted by it and tried to hide behind the standing bench.STEP 3: After that the other girls followed and started to play with each other around the benches. They climbed, jumped, ran and creeped with the benches, as if they are playing on a playground.

What can 3 benches do? A playground, a table with 2 seats, a bed for a wanderer, a operating platform, a stage...it depends on the way you set them. In this process people interact with the benches and the benches therefore become an attractive spot to the passerby, then people gather around them and use them creatively.

In the same way, a simple installation in a building or a certain area can also act as the benches, to make the living environment more interactive and attractive.

During my school holidays in the past 5 years, I travelled independently in many cities and areas all around China.

Through travelling I explored various lifestyle in different areas of this country and at the same time became more and more open and tolerant to the world.

What the most fascinating to me is how the people live in harmony with their living environment, how the local customs, buildings, climate and the character of the residents excercise influence on each other.

I love to take photos on the way or in my daily life, which can actually reflect what I experience, feel and think. From a same photo or a same journey everyone can find out something different, I think that's the charming of photography and travel.

Page 34: PORTFOLIO

My hometown is a small city in Hunan province, which is compared to other Chinese cities very slowly developing, so that it remains many old things and lifestyle there.

But they are also disappearing. I just wanna do something to keep the memory and spirit that growed with me in this small town. I tried to record it in photos, to learn how to cook local dishes, and wanna learn more about how to protect and develop the local buildings and living environment in its own way.

Maybe that's why I wanna study ARCHITECTURE.

TO SHANGHAI

I studied and lived in Shanghai for 5 years. Shanghai is a metropolis as a centre of economy and culture, but it's also small and wet. So the Shanghainese tried many methodes to expand their living space. This photo shows how they dry their clothese in a smart way.

Page 39: PORTFOLIO

35

Though Shanghai may be the symbol of fashion and richness, most people are living a normal life in Shanghai. What's more, many of them came here to realize their dream for a better life, but have to work very hard and live in the bottom of the society. In this photo, some of them are having box lunch after work, some are buying lottery as a routine task.

Water is important for the environment, which can adjust the climate, set off the buildings, or just provide a place for the people to go swimming or fishing. My hometown is by the Dongting Lake, the water give us fish, rice and reed, we cherish it.

When the sun shines through the leaves, it becomes soft and changeful, light green, dark green, emerald green, yellow green...like the painting of Henri Rousseau.

Umbrellas, books, you look like a painting.

TO MACAU

Macau is small and rich in moutains. As the area with the highst population density in the world, Macau is desperately in lack of land.

High-density residential is a typical view in Macau, people always build apartment even gymnasium on the top of the buildings, which is usually very tall and small.

Macau is also a collage of old times and modern life. The gorgeous building of Grand Lisboa stands by the old and shabby houses, and the old women just sit together, quietly, looking at the buildings, thinking about something in the past days.

Page 45: PORTFOLIO

41

Guangzhou is a city in the subtropical zone, so that the plants there grow prosperously all the year round. But Guangzhou is also of high-population-density, which is similiar to the most southern Chinese cities I have travelled in.

Because of this reason, sometimes people have to build a house where a big tree grows. Different from some cities where the trees are fell down for the construction, the Guangzhou people let the tree stay in their balcony and stretch out for sunshine and raindrops, at the same time providing a shelter for the alley.

TO PEKING

Peking, a combination of a great old forbidden city and a northen industrial city, well-organized planning of old town and chaotic traffic system of the modern times.

For me, it's a real treasure for historic buildings, and I also lernt much about Chinese china in the biggest museum of China.
