No. 4+5 The Parade, Market Square,

Northampton has been redesigned as a

Multi-purpose Entertainment and Arts

Centre of mixed use.

It was the aim that this development

would provide Northampton with a centre

for entertainment, where a variety of

spaces including an auditorium for live

theatre, music performance and

exhibition; an art and design gallery, and

a cinema would all coexist, alongside a

restaurant and various bar areas, within a

single building.

The concept of this multi-purpose venue

is to primarily act as a 'hub' for the public

to gather, socialise, experience

something unique and be immersed in the

creative arts. The proposed

redevelopment includes an array of

spaces, laid out as a journey over four

floors that will work in conjunction to

achieve this.

This project focused on redeveloping the old premises of the

Chronicle and Echo, Upper Mounts, Northampton.

The aim was to create a place of intervention and

transformation, developing ideas that would benefit the local

community and promote a sociable environment.

The final proposal was for an exhibition space, designed to

accommodate a regularly changing programme of installations

and small exhibitions. The spaces could be used for a wide

range of exhibits including paintings, sculptures, photography,

fashion, textiles, ceramics and interactive media, as well as

lectures, talks and discussions.

Focus was given to the idea of a stage or platform where the

event or action takes place. Creating a pathway through the site

was another priority. The design of the space was inspired by

public squares and pedestrian streets such as Piazza Novona in

Rome or La Rambla in Barcelona. It was important that the

design also reflected the locations history; the frame installation

mimics the form of the terrace buildings that once existed along

Great Russell Street.
