J. Joseph & Sons:Cutting Shear & Baghouse
Background:◦ Catalytic Converters (found in automobile exhaust systems) contain trace amounts
of Platinum Group Metals. In order to extract these metals, the converters must be cut open; a dirty and dangerous process
◦ Dust generated by cutting catalytic converters is both very fine and very toxic. It is also the most material rich part of the converter
Objective:◦ Refurbish existing baghouse and cutting shear◦ Design safety enclosure around the cutting shear to protect a user from both
material being ejected from the shear and catalytic converter dust
Project Overview:◦ Shear and Baghouse were rusted and not in working condition to begin◦ Phase I: break down equipment and determine needed parts list◦ Phase II: order needed parts from DustControl and hydraulic shops◦ Phase III: Refinish old components and integrate with new parts◦ Phase IV: Install compressed airline for baghouse filter cleanout and cutting shear
cleaning
Skills Used:◦ Assembly of heavy equipment◦ Design for “manufacturability”
◦ Equipment and protective enclosure assembled by self◦ MIG welding◦ Hand tool proficiency
