Triplets! Three brand new ambu- lances are the big news from Darien EMS-Post 53 this year, thanks to the extraordinary generosity of the Weatherstone, Ziegler and Bantle families. On January 23, 2005, the three new ambulances were christened at a ceremony that included state and local luminaries and, of course, Mr. Doble. However, getting those ambu- lances from donation to reality was the result of the hard work of a 33-year Post 53 veteran, Bob Dennis. For twelve months, Bob was the point man in set- ting the specifications of the ambu- lances, ordering them, picking them up, organizing radio installations, stocking them, and getting final inspections and registrations completed. And he did it all three times, because each ambulance was brought into service separately over a period of three months, so as not to interrupt the 24/7 service. Also, as if this was not enough, Bob took the lead in dismantling and selling the old ambu- lances. In gratitude for these efforts, and for his 30+ years of service, Post 53 hon- ored Bob at the ambulance christening by having the town of Darien and the state of Connecticut declare January 23, 2005 Robert W. Dennis day — a well deserved honor. 2004 Vital Signs Total annual calls . . . . . . . . . . .1427 Number of times two or more ambulances were needed . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .171 Number of hours of training classes taught at Post 53 . . . . .425 Number of O2 tanks used . . . .218 Posties assist a patient DARIEN EMS-POST 53 NEWSLETTER VOL. 2 2004/2005 Working To Earn The 2004 Memorial Day Food Fair and the Limette Doble Art Show (our 14th Art Show!) were both rousing successes this year. Young adultsPost 53 currently has over50 young adult members.12 seniors will graduate in

June, but 15 to 20 candidates are expect-ed to join over the summer and into thefall. There were 18 sophomores in the2004/2005 EMT class, and for the firsttime ever, thanks to some aggressiveclass scheduling, all will be certified andready for duty by the beginning of thesummer. In addition, seven young adultscompleted the extensive driver-trainingcourse and have been qualified to drivethe ambulances.

Post goes digitalThis year, Gayle Close, one of the Post’sadult advisors who has extensive televi-sion production experience, volunteeredto create a DVD about Post 53. The proj-ect was funded by a generous grantfrom the Marion Moore Foundation.Using a script written from the youngadult’s perspective, and editing footagefrom hundreds of hours of video takenover the years, they produced an excit-ing, comprehensive picture of the Post. Many of the seniors included the DVD intheir college applications.

Also in 2004, Post 53 moved farther intothe internet age. There is now a speciallink on the Post 53 website where mem-bers can access training documents, ros-ters, schedules, bulletins, protocols andother useful information. Members nolonger have to call down to the Post tofind out the schedule, or hunt down atraining packet on a particular topic. Itwill all be accessible on the website. Inaddition, thanks to the many generousdonations in memory of William T. Orr,Post 53 now has a state-of-the-art audiovisual unit for training.

Not so mellow yellowsFor many Darienites, the yellow turnoutgear that Posties wear to motor vehicleaccidents is a familiar sight. “Yellows”are a critical component of safety, because they increase the visibility ofthe EMS responders and they add extraprotection from broken glass, sharpmetal and spilled oil and gasoline.Needless to say, they get a lot of wearand tear. The Post is very grateful to theLions Club and the Marion MooreFoundation for funding replacement yellows and helping keep Posties safeon scene.

It’s not all workOn the fun side, the young adultsenjoyed an old tradition in December–the overnight lock-in! From dusk todawn, all the young adults (and a fewchaperones) enjoyed catered food, lotsof movies and games, and not too muchsleep. The young adults are also verygrateful to the donor of the foosballtable, which has quickly become asource of regular entertainment andcompetition.
