The masthead immediately establishes the school as private-”independent”.

The main icon of cricket implies that it has a strong sports curriculum in the school.

Cricket is a high class sport- implying that the school has a rich reputation.

The primary story, “have a sporting summer” implies that the students are impacted by the learning even after out of school hours.

The secondary story denotes that the school supports pupils with a variety of abilities.

Topic about learning another language suggests that the school wants their pupils to be able to communicate in languages other than English.

The story outlining the topic of a gap year signifies that the school respects the idea of a year off, even though it will not benefit them. This entails that the school wants to be seen as respecting all decisions made by pupils. The teaser story denoting

the method of teaching resilience conveys that the school believes that determination is important.

An action like this implies that the school is experienced in photography

The bright weather and large grounds imply that the school is well kept

AS Media Studies Preliminary Task – School Magazine Front Page Proposal Form

Target audience: (age range, interests)Although it is a school newsletter you still have to think about your audience and how to appeal to them.

The age range of the school would be either teenagers who may want to read the magazine., but the majority would be the parents of the students. The parents will be interested in the events of the school that their child may have participated in . The calendar will also be of some importance to the parents so they are aware of what is going on in the academic year.

Possible title ideas: (masthead / title block)What is your magazine going to be called?

The Priory Chronicle

Main image:What will be the focal point of your front page, remember, your work “must include a photograph of a student in a medium close-up”

Sexy Sax Image from concert

Main cover line:What will be the main story?

The story behind the Sexy Sax Scandal-Jack Lawther reports.

Additional key images:What other images will be on your front cover?Remember, it is a school magazine.

Sixth Form

Additional cover lines:Other features, stories or selling points which will be inside the magazine, these need to be audience appropriate.

Life in Sixth Form

Typography: (style, size, colour of copy)Think about the writing and the style of the writing on your front page.

Large plain font as a title.

Background colour/image:What will be in the background, remember you don’t want to take the focus away from the main image.

Priory Logo

Technical considerations:(equipment, setting, props, costume, lighting)Be realistic and creative, think about what you have access to and how you could use it.

Preliminary exercise: produce a front page and contents page of a school magazine. Front covers must include a

photograph of a student in a medium close-up with appropriately laid out text and use of an image manipulation

programme (Photoshop).

Below start to sketch what the front cover of your newsletter will look like.

I edited the picture by changing the opacity from 100 from 77% to blend in with the surroundings.

I used the smudging tool to smooth out some places on Luke’s face, which is the only editing I have done on this image as I thought it didn’t need any other changes.

What Have I Learnt?• I have learnt from this preliminary task that editing a picture on Photoshop isn’t

always necessary- the best images have little to no editing on them. • I have also seen how effective market research is in developing a product that

efficiently adheres to the demands of its target audience.• Another part of this process that I have developed new skills from is the

importance of the name of the title on the magazine, as on reflection I think that a more modern style of font would appeal to the target audience of students and parents, as the one I have chosen has a rather pretentious and supercilious, and stereotypically a style of text appropriate for a private school magazine.

• A contrasting skill to those already listed is the significance of getting an equilibrium between the ratio of text and images. I have realised that a student will not want to read a word-heavy text, but the amount and size of images will not affect the parents also reading it. To meet these two demands I have balance the amount of pictures so they compliment the text but are large enough to not bore the student.
