PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

As this term comes to an end it is a good time to reflect upon the many great achievements, events and learning experiences that the children have had since late January. In classes students have been very active and many have shown great application to their work as well as joining with their friends in fun activities. Our new Preps have really settled in well and at the other end of the school our Year 6 students have really shown leadership and great maturity as they embark upon their last year at Essex Heights.

As I walk into each year level I regularly see children working individually, others discussing their work, focussed and listening to instructions or others involved in an activity with a teacher. This term has been a great start to 2017 and I am sure it will continue when we return in Term 2.

Last week I mentioned that Mrs Joan Scott would be taking leave during Term 2 and most likely be retiring at the end of that time. I am very pleased to announce that Carolyn Wilson and Ben Wooster will share the Assistant Principal position vacated by Mrs Scott. Their skills and passion for education add to the leadership mix at Essex Heights and I look forward to working closely with them and Ina Kuehlich within the Principal team. I am very pleased to announce that I have also added Brianna Golsworthy to the leadership team for one day per week. As a result of these appointments, two new staff members will join our school in Term 2. in the school as casual relief teachers. I am sure that you will join with me in welcoming them both to our school and we look forward to them having a long and productive association with the children.

Following the term vacation, school resumes on Tuesday 18th April. Due to the fact that we will be having a special ANZAC assembly the following Monday (24th April), a normal weekly assembly will be held on Tuesday 18th April at 2.30pm in the Hall.

I hope that you all have a restful and happy Easter break and I look forward to seeing all at the start of Term 2.

Happy Easter,

George Perini Principal

Thank you and farewell at Monday’s Assembly

Dear Parents and School Community Members,

This is my last week at Essex Heights, in the Assistant Principal office; as you know I am about to take some leave with a view to retiring at the end of Term 2.

Thank you to the PFA representatives and parent community for all your kind words and for the beautiful rose that was presented to me at Monday’s assembly. I have been very fortunate to work in such a supportive community over a very long period of time. Of course I will miss everyone and all the daily happenings at Essex Heights. In particular I will miss the daily contact with all of your children. I have so enjoyed getting to know them, working with them in many contexts, and celebrating their achievements, big and small.

FROM JOAN SCOTT

I am of course looking forward to the luxury of time to spend with my family, and to devote to other areas of my life.

I’m sure I’ll pop in to the school from time to time to see how the children are going, and may catch up with some of you.

In the meantime, thanks again, and all the best for the future.

Regards Joan Scott

GRANDPARENTS & SPECIAL FRIENDS DAY

Friday 31st March

Special Friends Day Dear Grandparents, Parents and Special Friends,

For Grandparents & Special Friends Day, the Essex Heights students have some exciting musical performances planned for you, along with some other fun activities and creative displays. The following Choirs and Ensembles will be performing for everyone on the day: Year 1 & 2 Choir, Year 4 Marimba Ensembles and the Year 6 Marimba Ensembles (School Song).

Kenalkan, nama saya Bu Sarah. Let me introduce myself, my name is Miss Sarah.

Many of you will have noticed some Indonesian phrases and words in a recent newsletter. Throughout this term the students have been learning more about Indonesia through photos and artefacts from my experiences, as well as continuing to develop their vocabulary to introduce themselves to others.

The Preps have made a wonderful start to their Indonesian learning and are already using words and phrases without prompting!

I am also very pleased to have four fantastic Year 6 Indonesian Captains who have eagerly told me about some of their creative ideas for integrating the Indonesian language across the school! We look forward to Mia, Sophia, Stephanie and Abbie leading their peers throughout the year.

Sayembara Lisan: Statewide annual Indonesian Oral Competition

The Sayembara Lisan is an annual statewide Indonesian Oral Competition for Prep to Year 11 students.

It is a wonderful opportunity for students to use their language in an environment other than the classroom and to have fun speaking Indonesian!

Getting involved in School Banking is easy!

All you need to get involved in the School Banking program is a Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account. You can open an account for your child in one of two ways:

1. Online Visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking and click on the link to open a Youthsaver account.

2. In Branch Visit a Commonwealth Bank branch (Hamilton Place, Mount Waverley, is our local branch) with identification for yourself and your child (eg your driver’s licence and your child’s birth certificate - check what you need to take so you have documents worth enough points).

If your child has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account they can start banking straight away. Students bring their money in their yellow Youthsaver deposit wallet every week on School Banking day (Tuesday) and hand it to their teacher in the morning when they arrive at school.

If you would like to know more about School Banking, please ask for a 2017 School Banking program information pack from the school office or visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking.

A reminder that Term 2 begins on a Tuesday and that’s School Banking day.

Thanks and enjoy the holidays! Angela Millan
