IvoryburningsiteinNairobiNationalPark.WeatherandRainfall:

TherainshavecontinuedthroughoutthisperiodbutwedonotexpectmoreraininJuneorJulyGeneralWeareveryhappytoannouncethatinthelast2-monthperiodwehavenotlostasingleelephantintheMaraecosystem!Thisinformationcomesfrominter-agencies.ThereareveryfewpoachersonthestreetintheMara,areasarebeingcombedforpoachers,andthestiffpenaltiesandcommunitysupporthaveallmadeadifferencetostopthepoaching.Someareaswestilldonothaveaccurateinformationfromandwearekeentoexpandintotheseareas.Recentlywehavebeenmitigatinganumberofhumanelephantconflictsituationsandwehavenoticedthateachfamilygrouphasbabyelephants.IntheOlKinyei

ConservancyMegaherdsofelephantshavebeenresidentandoneherdhas100pluselephantsinit.Webelievethattheverylushenvironmentatthemomentthatcansupportsuchaconcentrationofelephantshassomethingtodowiththis;butalsothatelephantshavegatheredforsafetyreasons.ThiswasseeninTsavoattheendofthefirstpoachingcrisis.OnApril30106tonsofivorywassetablazeinNairobiNationalPark.Thisivoryrepresentedaround6,700deadelephantsand450deadrhinoswithastreetvalueestimatedat$150million.MaraElephantProjectwasproudtowitnesssuchahistoriceventmadepossiblebyourpartnersKenyaWildlifeService,SavetheElephants,CITES,StopIvoryandtheGovernmentofKenya.“Youreallyhadasensethateveryonetherewaslike-mindedandthereforthesamereason;toacknowledgethatKenyamadeaboldchoicethatwastherightchoicetoburntheivory.”SuzanneFehsenfeld,MEPfounder.PartnershipDevelopmentFromthe23rdtothe28thMEPrangersconductedassettrainingfor21PardamatandOlkineyirangers.Theyhadjustfinishedtheir3-monthManyanitrainingwithKWS.ThetrainingwasasuccessandWWFandMMWCAwhohavesponsoredthemcanbeproudofthegroupofyoungmenwhowillprotecttheirconservancies.Thecommunitieswillalsohaveimprovedsecurityandmedicservices.Thetrainingfocusedonusingspecificassets,whichtherangerswillbebothexposedtowhenworkingalongsideMEPbutalsowhileonregulardeployment.Pleaserequestthefulltrainingreportforfurtherreading.

MedicTrainingatMEPHQWesubmittedplanstoWWFformonitoringtheircollars,andtoSTEtodeployandmonitortheirproposedcollaringprojectinLoitaHillswithAfricaConservationCenter(ACC).

Fundraising:WiththesupportoftheIrisO’BrienfoundationMEPhiredaconsultantwhocompletedourfundraisingstrategyandithasbeenadopted.Wehavealsointerviewedforthefundraisingspecialistandoutof101applicantswefoundapromisingcandidateMrs.VictoriaFanthorpe.TheCEOwroteacaseforsupportfortheHelicoptertoraise70,000USDfor2016.Sofar500USDhascomeintoESCAPEFoundationforthehelicopter.WeappliedtotheWildcatfoundationfor1,400,000USDfora2-yearprogramandexpansion.Security: Thegangwereportedinthelastreporthavebeenpickedoffandnowwearefollowing2remainingmembers.Theyhavenotbeenabletostayinanyoneplaceformorethanafewdaysandwewillcatchupwiththem.Wehavebeenfollowingafirearmsreportrecentlyandhopetoconcludethisoperationsoon.RecentlytheTransmararangershavebeenengaginginanumberofbush-meatoperationsandarrested2poacherswhokilledanAardvarkonthe29rdofMay.IncidentssitrepIvoryrecoveredandarrest2/4/16
