From the Principal’s Desk

October 2017

Dear Stakeholders, Our students engaged in many exciting post-examination activities which developed them holistically in the five domains of Moral, Cognitive, Physical, Social and Aesthetics.

Advanced Elective Modules (AEM) Our Secondary Three Express students embarked on AEM course at various polytechnics from 23 October to 27 October 2017. They were exposed to the following courses: Electronic Product Design, Digital Integrated Circuit Technology, Mobile Devices and Applications, Animate IT, Game Design and Programming, Environmental Technologies, Appreciating 3D Printing with Mechatronics and Mobile Media and Entertainment Production.

These AEM experiences helped our students to gain more awareness of the multitude of courses in the various polytechnics, and provided glimpses of the rigour of being tertiary students. The polytechnic courses were well-aligned to industries in Singapore, hence our students had a chance to experience the demands of various jobs in these industries.

Elective Modules (EM)

Our Secondary 3 Normal students attended the Elective Modules (EM) programme in Semester 2. The programme aimed to broaden their learning experiences and to provide for their varied learning needs and styles. EMs provided students with opportunities in skill-training and exposed them to possible post-secondary education options. In Semester 2, the students attended EMs like Hospitality, Aeronautics, E-Commerce, Culinary, Broadcast Journalism and Mobile Robotics.

Culinary students preparing the main course

The students learned course-related skills and participated in learning journeys to various industries. The students in the aeronautics group had a group photo taken from a flying drone. The programme ended with a showcase of students’ newly acquired skills where students also shared their learning experiences with their teachers and school leaders.

ALP Post-Exam Programme for Secondary 1 & 2 The Secondary One cohort visited the Kok Fah Technology Farm during the post exam period as part of their Applied Learning Programme (ALP) module in Waste Management. The students learnt about the workflow and climate control processes in Kok Fah's Showcase Greenhouse. The guides at Kok Fah also shared with the students about how technology and science advancement can help to increase food productivity and efficiency. The pros and cons of different farming systems and how these systems help in increasing food security in a land-scarce Singapore were also discussed with students.

The Secondary One Normal Academic (NA) and Normal Technical (NT) students participated in the North East CDC - Applied Materials Science Explorer Camp. This programme is a collaboration between North East CDC and Applied Materials South East Asia Pte Ltd to inspire and spark interest in children with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). It aims to promote innovative thinking through Science workshops and hands-on experiments that could further their learning in Science. The NA students were engaged in the Solar Cooking module. The students learnt how energy from the sun can be harnessed and converted into heat energy to cook food. They used solar panels, aluminium sheets and cardboard boxes to build a solar cooker.

The NT students were engaged in the Toy Repair module. Students learnt the importance of repair as one of the answers to combat the waste issues we have in this world. Students took apart a toy and put it back together again to illustrate how common toys work. They were also engaged in designing their very own simple battery-operated toy.

The Secondary 2 students visited the Science Centre where they had the opportunity to explore the Kinetic Garden and the exhibits. Students were engaged in activities related to Mathematics and Science, specially designed by teachers in Punggol Secondary School. For example, the students took the temperature of tunnels of different colours - black, white and green (with foliage) and understood how such knowledge is applied into the design thinking process of architects. After delving into the various stations at the Kinetic Garden, students worked in groups to investigate a topic of choice: Tuning in: Brain and Body, Science@Work (Applications of Science), or Climate Change Climate Challenge.

National Public Speaking Competition 2017

A team of nine students from Secondary 1 to Secondary 3 participated in the National Public Speaking Competition held on 23 October 2017 at YMCA@Orchard. This year, the Singapore Book of Records confirmed the attendance of 245 participants, which makes the competition the “Largest Speech Competition in Singapore”. The students put in their best effort and performed very well on the day of the competition. The adjudicators were pleased with the students’ overall performance and commended the students for their high level of proficiency in public speaking. The competition was tough as schools all around Singapore sent their best speakers for the competition.

PSS students and teacher-in-charge Ms Deniisha Chand

Despite not making it into the top 15, the students took away some key learning points from this experience: “Taking part in the 'National Public Speaking Competition' was an experience for me to take my confidence towards speaking or performing in front of an audience to a higher level. This competition has helped me to be more open to the feedback from other people. I have definitely become more confident when it comes to being in front of a large number of people and I will use the experience to help me do better whenever there are future opportunities like this.” – Zarate Liana Rae Alyson Riparip, 1D
