What are best practices

A best practice is a technique or methodology that, through experience and research, has been proven to reliably lead to a desired result.

What is benchmarking??

HISTORY Before more recent technology was invented,

surveyors would chisel a horizontal mark in a permanent structure, like the one below, where a tool could be placed in the indention to help create a bench mark with a level rod, helping them and future craftsmen to have a point of reference for building.

But companies use benchmarking as a point of reference as well. But instead of having physical benchmarks carved in stone, they use benchmark reports as a way to compare themselves to others in the industry

Definition

Benchmarking is the practice of a business comparing key metrics of their operations to other similar companies. We can think of benchmark report as a dashboard on a car. It is a place you can quickly determine the health of the business. Much like a dashboard (where you can check your speed, gas level, temperature), a benchmark report can examine things like revenue, expenses, production amounts, employee productivity, etc. Benchmarking occurs across all types of companies (including private, public, non-profit, for-profit) as well as industries (e.g. technology, education, manufacturing). Many companies have positions or offices in the company that are in charge of benchmarking. Some of the positions include: Institutional researcher Information officer Data Analyst Consultant

BEST PRACTICES IN VARIOUS ORGANISATIONS

ANTSAnts are known for their discipline, other best practices include the following

A – Assiduous: Ants have an innate industriousness. Their entire life, which can range up to 7 years, is spent working. Ants can lift 20 times their own body weight. Always on the move, the legs of ants are very strong enabling them to run very quickly.

N – Neat, extremely organized planners: Ants plan for the future. They gather food, bring it back to the nest, and use it for daily meals and for winter storage.

T – Team players: Ants work in teams to move extremely heavy things and capture prey. They work collectively towards a singular goal and can mobilize extra workers when an abundant food source is discovered or the colony is in need of defense.

S – Sharing: As a species, much of the success of ants is due to task sharing and cooperation. The abdomen of the ant contains 2 stomachs: 1 for its own food and a second to be shared with other ants. If a worker ant finds a good food source, it leaves a scented trail so that other ants in the colony can locate the food.
