Wildflower Quilt Guild Newsletter

A Note From the President

Greetings, fellow quilters. Enjoying this hot Texas

weather? I have a mighty respect for those who work

construction out in this burning heat. Makes one want

to stay indoors for a long time.

I hope you are feeling as excited as Charlotte and I are

when we are now at 137 quilts for our show. Our show

may be small, but it is going to be a really great show.

Charlotte and I met this past week to look over the en-

tries, and poured over the site plans as to where we

are going to hang them all. Now that is a good problem

to have.

We want to thank everyone who has been helping with

this year’s show. We have one board meeting and one

quilt show meeting before the big event, July 28 and

29.

“Bob’s Lament” - by (former WQG President) Cheryl Kibbe

I’ve lost my wife to the quilting bug, to fabrics in vast array;

She measures and sews and irons all night and even all through the day.

Sharps, betweens, and batting? It’s all a little hazy.

Last time I asked her what it all means,

she looked at me like I was crazy!

The carpet is now a minefield of needles long and sharp.

They keep on ending up there no matter how I harp!

I don’t mind TV dinners, I try hard not to groan;

but when she’s headed for Quilt Guild, I know I’m on my own!

My first job pays for her sewing machine, my second for her thread.

The third should pay off her fabric bill if I don’t keel over dead!

But when she’s sighing o’er patterns and catalogs, I’d give her more if I could.

I’ve lost my wife to the quilting bug, but this quilt sure does feel good!

A Blast from the past - Quips & Quotes January, 1999

Patti Emmerling has been diligently working on get-

ting our programs and workshops set up for next

year. Mary Anne continues with this year’s programs

and workshops, and I so thank her for saying she

would take on that job. I heard a lot of comments

about the Fat Quarter Shop’s program at our June

meeting. They always make it look so quick and

easy. There are so many who share their talents with

us, and I need all the help I can get.

Hoping you have a great July 4th with family and

friends, celebrating our great country. My closing

thought I saw in an email another friend sent me:

Good friends are like quilts-they age with you yet nev-

er lose their warmth!

Happy quilting, Mary Ann

S ilver Threads Celebrating 25 Years of Quilting

WQG 2017 Show - July 28th and 29th

Our Quilt Show is less than a month away and things are

going very well. We are so excited to see all of your quilt-

ing hanging at the church! We have a count of 137 quilts

entered. Great job, ladies!!!

We have ten vendors signed up to come so be prepared to

shop and find some really nice things. Our vendors will

have a good variety of items in their booths so I know eve-

ryone will find something they just can't live without!

Our Boutique committee is working hard to price all the

items that have been turned in to them. If you haven't

turned your items in, please contact Peggy Mathis or Mar-

tha Smith and turn them in no later than the July guild

meeting. I've seen some cute things being turned in!

Our Raffle Quilt tickets sales are going well. As of late in

June, we had sold a little over $1,000 in raffle tickets and

we hope you are all trying to sell more during this last

month before the show. Remember, the person who sells

the most raffle tickets will be receiving a very nice prize

basket worth approximately $250.

Sign-up Sheets have been at the last two guild meetings

but it isn't too late to sign up to volunteer your time for the

show! Be sure to find the sheets at our next meeting and

get your name down so you can help us out. We especial-

ly will be needing help on Wednesday morning to get the

poles and drapes set up and on Saturday afternoon after

the quilts come down to get the poles and drapes down!

This will be a job that does require physical labor so if you

and/or your husband are able to help with this, we would

love to have as many able bodies as possible. Since this

is our first time to use the system from the Crossroads to

Texas guild in Killeen, we know it is going to be a learning

experience for us all and will help us decide if we want to

pursue this course in future quilt shows.

WHEN YOU DROP OFF YOUR QUILTS ON WEDNES-

DAY, JULY 26th (between 3:00 and 5:45), please remem-

ber they must have the following:

• A label attached to the back of your quilt with your

name, quilt name, address and phone number.

Please have this label covered when you bring it in

for judging purposes.

• Each quilt must have a hanging sleeve - miniatures

may have a 2" sleeve. All other quilts need a 4"

sleeve. Go to http://www.quiltweek.com/hanging-

sleeve-instructions/ for information on how to make

a hanging sleeve.

• Each quilt must be delivered in its own separate fab-

ric bag such as a pillow case and your name, ad-

dress and phone number must be on the outside of

the pillowcase. I just bought some inexpensive pil-

lowcases and wrote on them with a permanent

marker.

• If you cannot bring your quilts to the church between

these times on Wednesday, get in touch with Char-

lotte or Mary Ann as soon as possible.

Looking forward to a fabulous quilt show!

Charlotte Massey and Mary Ann Everett

Membership News

We had 63 members attend the June meeting of the

Wildflower Quilt Guild. Our guests this month were Lisa

Kerlin and Colleen King of Rockdale along with Victoria

Jones of Belton and Jennifer Macaulay of Austin. We

welcomed three new members in June. They are Di-

ane Henderson of Temple, Lea Ann Schnack of Temple

and Gene Stork of Rockdale. The grand door prize this

month was a beautiful box of colored Mettler threads

donated by Temple Sew and Quilt Store. They are lo-

cated at 1510 South 31st Street in Temple. Please don’t

forget to stop by there to

show our appreciation of

their ongoing support.

ner of the grand prize and

a book voucher for a book

from the WQG library.

ANOTHER BLAST FROM THE PAST

From the January, 1999 WQG Newsletter

“Quilt Maker”

By Pauline Harvard

Farm Journal, Feb, 1949

In the little white house her husband built,

she sews the pieces of a patchwork quilt.

Three, she has made, just since November,

all rich colors and fine to remember -

the Wedding Ring pattern and the

Evening Star.

Quilts that are lovely as all quilts are

which are sewn in the twilight, in a firelit place.

Through bits of cloth she sees his well loved face.

He keeps her company, and she turns the seams

with a needle full of patience,

a thimbleful of dreams.

June Meeting

Many thanks to Kimberly Hol-

ly from the Fat Quarter Shop

who put on a fabulous trunk

show and tell at our June

guild meeting. Kimberly and

her colleagues showed us

Quilts from past, current, and

even future patterns that they

have published. Then we all

got the opportunity for a bit

of shopping of their great

products.

COLORING ON FABRIC WORKSHOP

Cindy Petersen’s much anticipated workshop, "Coloring on

Fabric" will be held on Wednesday July 12th at Grace Presby-

terian Church from

9:00-3:00. She has

drawn a cute block

for us to color and

stretch our creativity!

We have kits made

up which include fab-

ric, small paint brush,

and pencil sharpener

for $9.00 and

then you contribute

$5.00 for the church.

You will need to bring

your set of colored

pencils and a black micron permanent pen (no sewing ma-

chines required). It is going to be fun, something new for us

and loads of fellowship. To sign up for the workshop, please

contact Cindy at [email protected].

July WORKSHOP

Three Quilting Tips

“WE CARE” BEE

All guild members are invited to join our We Care Bee the

first Wednesday of every month. We focus on donation

quilts and other projects and share lots of ideas and tips

and laughter. At our next meeting on July 5th Cindy Moore

will bring LOTS of pillowcase kits for everyone to sew pil-

lowcases for the kids at McLane Children's Hospital. Of

course it you want to work on your own donation quilt or

boutique donation item, you are welcome to. We hope to

see you all Wednesday at Grace Presbyterian Church

from 9:00-3:00!

QUILTING ON THE GO

Take projects along when you travel or when you sit in a

waiting room. It’s a great way to find quilting minutes.

1. Select a project suitable for work away from home.

2. Hand piecing, appliqué and embroidery are all very

practical and portable. Marking and cutting patches

ahead of time make sewing a breeze.

3. Plan your work space carefully to avoid accidents.

Keep notions and sewing supplies fastened to some-

thing that can’t spill. Chatelaines are perfect for hold-

ing scissors, thimble, thread, pins, and needles.

4. Choose small embroidery scissors or thread snips,

wind thread around bobbins and take several pins

and needles.

TRAVEL KIT IDEA

Put a spool of thread

in an old pill bottle with

a small hole in the lid.

Thread several nee-

dles and feed one nee-

dle at a time through

the hole with a length

of thread.

NOT SO PERMANENT MARKER!

To clean permanent marker from the

edge of your plastic ruler write over the

marks with a dry erase marker then

use a cotton ball dipped in rubbing al-

cohol to rub the marks away.

CONTINUOUS BINDING

When making continuous bias binding, slip the fabric

tube over the end of an ironing board. You can cut the

bias with one hand as you turn the tube with the other.

Cut 24 – 6” squares of 100% cotton fabric (selvages re-

turn – (this makes it easier for us to distribute the squares).

Put the Charm Squares in a Ziploc bag with your name it,

drop the bag off at the Charm Square table before the start

of the guild meeting and remember to pick your bag up at the

end of the guild meeting. You will have a wonderful variety of

6” fabric squares to work with.

WORKSHOP - JULY 19TH

RE-PURPOSING OLD LINENS

BY RITA SCHORMANN

Held on Wednesday July 19th at Grace Presbyterian

Church from 9:00-3:00, this sounds like a fun way to use

up old pieces of works and create new ones. You will

need to bring at least 9 different items- the more you have

the more variety in your blocks. Your linens do not have

to be in perfect condition, we will be cutting around the

holes and stains, etc. They do not have to be all hand

done either, Rita has used some commercial pieces.

Here are some items you can consider bringing: Dresser

scarves, pillow cases, chair back covers, arm covers,

aprons, samplers, doilies, table cloths etc. Anything that

has embroidery or other fancy work on it will be great..

Also bring a few fat quarters or solid pieces or small prints

that can be used to back the thinner pieces. Other sup-

plies needed: Rotary cutter, medium mat, ruler, at least

3 1/2 x 12 or 18" long, sewing machine and regular sew-

ing supplies.

The pattern will be supplied as part of the class fee, the

cost is $25 per person. We need at least 10 people to

sign up but can have more. Please contact me at pa-

[email protected] to sign up!
