WELCOME TO ALL STUDENTS

AND FAMILIES!

From the Principal

Welcome to 2020

I would like to extend a ‘welcome to 2020’ to our school community. I trust everyone had a safe and relaxing holiday period. With the fires, storms and floods in various parts of the country, we hope everyone was safe and return thankful for all that we are lucky enough to enjoy. A special welcome to all new students and their families.

Year 7 students

A special welcome to all Year 7 students and their parents/ guardians. We are lucky to welcome such a fine cohort of students and have heard many wonderful things about our incoming Year 7 students from their Primary Schools. We have 105 Year 7 students starting in 2020. We were expecting 112; however, emails and contact over the holiday period explained change in circumstances for some who intended to begin in 2020.

I would like to remind Year 7 students that they now become the custodians of our reputation and represent all present, past and future students as well as the name of ‘Randwick Boys’ High School’.

Bus times – Wednesday afternoons

I would like to point out that the buses that service Randwick Girls’ and Boys’ High Schools have changed their pick-up times on a Wednesday afternoon. More details are included in this newsletter.

Novel Coronavirus

I would like to thank our school community for their understand-ing with the ‘Novel Coronavirus’ that is currently an issue worldwide.

The Department of Education and Health have released infor-mation to parents/students and schools, in regard to ‘best practice’. Students and family members who have visited China and Hong Kong during the last holiday period (especially the last 14 days), are encouraged to stay at home and not attend school for 14 days (the incubation period). We have a small number of students who meet this criteria and they have all complied with the recommendations. We thank them and all our community, for your understanding in this matter.

Opportunities for students

As stated during our first assembly of the year, I would like to remind students and their parents of the fact that Randwick Boys’ High School will offer many varied opportunities for our students to extend themselves, particularly trying new things. We have clubs operating, excursions and incursions, musical, sporting, artistic and performing opportunities galore! As young men, we encourage our students to take as many opportunities on offer as they can, to try new things and discover that they may have talents and skills in areas that they have not even tried! Getting involved in school events is SO very rewarding and we hope that all students get involved in the life of our school.

Swimming carnival – sunscreen, hat, water – STUDENTS’ responsibility

Our annual swimming carnival will take place on Thursday 6th February at the Des Renford Aquatic Centre. Some students will make their own way to and from the venue and some will want to pay for a seat on the bus/es that leave the school in the morning and also return students who have paid, in the afternoon. Again, we encourage ALL students to attend and participate in the carnival. It is the first chance our students have to build ‘House points’ that go towards

our points system and allows many in one house to attend a reward excur-sion at the end of 2020. In the past, students have travelled to ‘Jamberoo Water Park’. In 2020, we may return to Jamberoo or attend Luna Park or another venue that is just as exciting! It is a great way to reward those who have worked hard and achieved for their house. Mr Noreika has spoken to all students about the carnival and permission notes and instructions will be sent home shortly.

A reminder that before, during and after the swimming carnival, students are responsible for applying (and re-applying) sunscreen, wearing a hat and NOT getting sunburnt! They are also responsible for staying hydrated! The canteen will be open at the venue; however, students can bring their own lunch. NO valuables are to be brought to the carnival (phones, ipads, ipods, headphones, large sums of money etc).

I would like to congratulate the ‘Class of 2019’ for their outstanding Higher School Certificate results in 2019. The results were exceptional and were the best Randwick Boys’ High School have achieved in many years.

A reminder to our School Community that the 2020 Open Night will be held on Tuesday 3rd March, 2020, 5:30 - 7:30(ish). This annual event allows prospective students and families to see the wonderful things that we do at Randwick Boys’ High School, on a daily basis! Please let friends and families know of the event so they may attend.

Meet the Teacher and welcome BBQ

The annual ‘Welcome/Meet the Teacher’ BBQ will be held on Tuesday 25th February from 5pm in our school Hall. BORROWING CALCULATORS FOR STUDENTS DURING MATHEMATICS EXAMS

All  Students  are  expected  to  bring  a  calculator  for  a  Mathematics Exam/Assessment  Task.  If  you  do  not  bring  a  calculator,  you  are  risking attempting  the exam without a  calculator. You are not  guaranteed  to  find a calculator to borrow on the day. Calculators are also sold at school at the front office.

If you forget your calculator on the day of a Mathematics Examination, you must:

Try to borrow one from a friend as your first resort.  You may also buy one from the front office (if they have any remaining).

If you need to borrow a calculator on the day of a Mathematics Examination from a teacher you must:

Go  to  the  Mathematics  staffroom  and  borrow  from  a  Mathematics teacher in the staffroom. Note: There may not be a mathematics teacher available in the staffroom.

Your name, Year, date, classroom teacher’s name and the number of the calculator  will  be  recorded.  The  calculator  will  be  returned  to  the teacher/staffroom where you will sign and be ticked off as ‘returned’.

This process must be done before entering the examination room.

There  is  NO  BORROWING  of  a  CALCULATOR  while  the  student  is  in  the examination room.

It is a condition of the School Pass Terms and the Student Codes of Conduct when travelling that students in possession of the School Opal card must tap on and tap off every time when using public transport to travel to and from school. Per section 3.2 of the Opal Privacy Policy, Transport for NSW collects information from taps on and taps
