When it comes to taking care of a homeor remodeling, home owners can make some unwisedecisions. ServiceMagic, a Web site that features anetwork of nationwide service professionals–includingin home improvement–has an article “8 Things YouShould Never Do to Your Home.” Here are a fewcommon home owner mistakes that made its list:

1. Going overboard with remodeling. It’s easy toquickly let a budget go out the window whenremodeling. For example, the ServiceMagic articlecalls “bump-outs” a waste of money; these are whenyou extend a wall by a few feet, such as toaccommodate a bay window. However, the cost persquare foot is so high that you might as well opt for amore sizable addition that can be done at a lower costper square foot. Bottom-line: If you want to make areturn on your investment, you want to keep yourremodeling updates within the costs of yourneighborhood and compared to similarly sizedhomes. 2. Being in denial about your pet’s odor. Big orsmall, your pets smell and they probably shed too.Pets attach their smell to everything and guests whoenter your home will immediately pick up on it.Experts recommend to have your carpets andfurniture professionally cleaned every six months,and open the windows and vacuum frequently to helprid your home of any lingering pet odors.

3. Removing walls between rooms. Removingwalls quickly can become disastrous if you don’tknow if it’s a load-bearing wall. A qualifiedcontractor should know which walls can be removedand which can’t.

4. Becoming the messy neighbor. Curb appeal goesa long way in separating the nice neighborhoods fromthe bad. After all, bad yards can even bring propertyvalues down in an entire neighborhood. Don’t be“that” person with the weeds and uncared for lawn, orthat person who parks their car in the yard, the articlenotes.

Home Ownership Rate Stands at 65.5%

Americans still favor home ownership. The U.S. homeownership rate continuesto remain around 65.5 percent, the U.S. Census Bureau reported late lastweek. The home ownership rate is nearly the same as it was in the secondquarter of 2011 at 65.9 percent.

The Census Bureau also reported that vacancy rates for housing were 2.1percent and vacancy rates for renting were 8.6 percent in the second quarter.

The home ownership rate peaked at 69.2 percent in 2004. Home ownersoutnumber renters in nearly 100 percent of the nation’s 3,095 countiesevaluated by the Census.

Keweenaw County, located in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, posted one of thebest home ownership rates: 89.8 percent.
