records promotion music Volume 3, No. 13 Week of May 24th, 1965 RAY GRIFF * If you are 14 years of age, have a good ear for music and a mother and brother who dig the music * scene,you could be on the same road to success as )-^,1- Ray Griff. Actually it all started when Ray was only four and his big * brother Ken showed him "C" chord on the piano. It was just a matter of surrounding the "C" with other chords and coming up with words that match- ed. It all seemed like such a rewarding game that it became a part of his life. At 9 he was playing drums and singing with his school band in Win- field, Alberta. The Griff family then moved to Calgary where Ray went to high school and organized and played with a number of different bands. A local DJ who also pro- moted country shows throughout the west, put Ray and his band on a few "Grand Ole Opry" packages. It was during one of these tours that Ray met Johnny Horton. They both became very good friends. Johnny recognized the talent in this Canadian high school student and included one of Ray's songs, "Mr. Moonlight", on a later album. The thrill of having a big artist like Johnny Horton interested in his writing meant only one thing to Ray, that music was going to play a prominent part in his life. Like all young composers he started sending his material to various publishers. He also went on a three year scrimping and saving bender so he could travel to the only place in the world where the big hits were being ground out, Nashville. It was like jumping from the frying pan into the fire. One out of every four people in "Music City" were song writers and they could very well do without one more. But Ray persisted and finally landed a job as a song reviewer and plugger with a publish- ing firm. Jim Reeves became interested in this young foreigner with a good ear for music and recorded "Where Do I Go From Here" one of Ray's sacred numbers. From there on in it seemed like the whole world was beginning to recognize Ray Griff as a writer. Marty Robbins, Stonewall Jackson, Charlie Walker, Roy Bee and other artists began recording his songs. Ray had an ace up his sleeve. He could sing with the best of them. This talent was immediately recognized by Bob Ferguson, RCA Victor producer. The first Ferguson production for Ray "That Weepin' Willow Tree" brought this country type artist into the pop field. Both Cashbox and Billboard gave this single the nod. His follow-up "Golden Years", also written by Ray, definitely established Ray as a pop - country artist. Waiting has been part of the game for Ray. Waiting for a break in his own country. Waiting for and finally getting a break in a foreign country. Waiting for his songs to be recorded and now waiting for his own re- cordings to become hits. With all this pa- tience and still retaining the good humour and personality of a western Canadian plus the encouragement of greats in the busi- ness like Bob Ferguson of RCA Victor, RAY GRIFF will make it.     Winnipeg: The GuessWhos have joined thestars and will be appear-ing on a western tourwith the RighteousBrothers, Beau Brum-mels, Bobby Freemanand others. Edmontonwas their first stop,May 21. Next came Re-gina, May 22. Back toWinnipeg for the 23 andover at Calgary for theholiday, May 24. Theirnew single "Tossin' andTurnin' " is shaping upto greater expectationsthan "Shakin' All Over".

    This fact has already been established atthe Quality camp on receipt of a telegramfrom Mary Schlachter of Scepter recordswho also feels this follow-up is a strongchart contender.

    Calgary: Brian Sullivan sends newsthat Orchard records have released a newspiritual LP by Selma and Fred entitled"Heights of Happiness". Morris Orchard,who does disc and master -type recordingin the Calgary area, engineered the session.Interested distribs address all enquiriesto 3276 - 1 St. N.W. Other producers in theCalgary area, not known to us here at RPMare Specialty Series Div., Video AudioProductions and Earl Youngren. Briannotes that the New Christy Minstrels per-formed recently in Calgary and ticketswere sold out several days in advance.It was also apparent to Brian that theturnover of members of the NCM must bequite rapid as he found very few familiarfaces.

    Flin Flon: A little gal who signsher letters "A true Canadian" makes ourtask at RPM much easier. The local radiostation CFAR has been playing Canadianrecords of late and apparently being wellreceived among the populace of this nor-thern Manitoba town. CBC-TV "Music Hop"is also creating the right atmosphere forthe acceptance of Canadian talent. Ourwriter notes that The Guess Whos andShirley Matthews, The Travellers and Ianand Sylvia are as well known in Flin Flonas those from foreign countries. At a re-cent "Battle of Sounds" at CFAR, Dee andThe Yeomen with their "Say Baby" wonhands down over a foreign competitor. FlinFlon has been included in the itinerary of afew touring shows. Latest has been JerryPalmer and the Marksmen who could havescored heavier had his record been betterknown. Our teenage correspondent is dis-tressed over the many artists who leaveCanada, like Goulet, Anka, Lucille Starrand Terry Black. The letter also includeda thought we hope will become more andmore important to Canadians in the time tocome. "By 1967 I'd like to see Canadianperformers on top. My head is up and toesand fingers crossed for Canadian perfor-mers." Bless you.

    Burbank: Mike Maitland, prexy of WBRhas just completed the signing of the popu-lar TV and musical attraction, The KingFamily. The 38 members of this large sing-ing aggregation will be setting out on aconcert tour which will take them from coastto coast. It is hoped their first WBR re-lease will kick off this tour.

    New Britain, Conn: Van Trevor drops anote to inform us he is now on the Cana-dian -American label and a contributingwriter for The Summerhouse Music Group.Van's current outing "The Girl From TheMain Street Diner" is starting to break2

    out across Canada.Ottawa: The Canadian tour of the

    Rolling Stones started in Ottawa and sureenough this is where the first complaintscame from. Not against the Stones butrather the officials in charge of the spec-tacle. Toronto fans were also chewing outofficials by way of the dailies. In Londonthe fans resorted to a little more than com-plaints. The show was a shambles and thepolice held responsible. Sandy Gardiner's"Platter Platter and Idol Chatter" page inthe Ottawa Journal devoted space to thecomplaints of a few angry fans. Sandy alsoreminds the rest of Canada that its capitalis going to give Toronto a run for its moneyin the groups department. Already nation-ally known are The Staccatos and The Es-quires and coming up strong, The Baronsand The Characters. Where else should thenationalistic feeling be higher than inOttawa? Ottawans seem to take pleasurein spotlighting Canadian talent. The SwingSet Gentlemen, Ian Connerty, Doug McKeenand George Pollard. Teen spot promoterslike The Oak Door and others who willinglyplay Canadian artists. John Pozer of CJOH-TV is also a great booster of Canadian ta-lent. This is also where Canadian spiritedhigh school students like Brian Foran ofneighbouring Hull have the guts to get outand interest other students in signing a,etition for more recognition of Canadianartists. Paul Anka returned to his hometown April 30 and gave a great performanceto an appreciative audience. The Staccatos'new Capitol outing "Small Town Girl","Tossin' and Turnin' " by the Guess Whosand "Hum Drum" by Derek and Ed arebig Canadian items in Ottawa this week.

    Toronto: Gerry Wolff, the founder ofWolff Re cords of Canada Ltd., has resignedhis title as president of the company andis no longer an active company officer. Mr.Wolff's new ventures will include the forma-tion of a Music Publishing Co. and the en-largement of his firm Three Star Publica-tions specializing in monthly fan clubeditions on top artists with large fan clubsbehind them.

    The three day extravaganza to be heldat The Terrace in downtown Toronto May28, 29 and 30th and to be known as TeensFunarama is moving into high gear. Exhi-bitors have been very eager to securebooth space to promote and display theirwares. Most of the major record companiesand several of the smaller labels have alsomade plans to be represented at this firstof its kind teen attraction.

    Teens Funarama prexy Bill Anthony isanxiously awaiting the opening day. Hehas arranged for entertainment to be thefocal point of the three day fair. Top name

    The Canadian Classics pictured above areone of the most popular of groups on thewest coast. Their newest release onApex "Goodbye My Love" is fast be-coming a chart climber.

    Canadian groups will entertain every hourthe fair is open. Artists will be availablefor autograph sessions. Record companieswill be selling as well as displaying theirproduct. Musical instrument firms will havea chance to show off their newest in equip-ment. Searchlights and live broadcastingwill give this show the Hollywood treat-ment. RPM has been asked to put out aspecial issue. The response by advertisershas been something short of fantastic. Allin all it's shaping up to be the biggestteen attraction, outside the Beatles, of theyear. Rumours have it that several of therecord companies have made arrangementsfor top international artists to appear.

    Columbia Records of Canada,Don Mills,Ontario, have announced that they havebeen awarded distribution rights for ScotchBrand Magnetic Tape and Accessories.

    Record Jottings: From Capitol comesnews that they have acquired the rights to"Little Lonely One" by one of the newestsinging sensations Tom Jones. This re-lease, hot on the heels of Jones' appear-ance on the Ed Sullivan show should makeit a shoo-in for chart action. Lou Rawlscomes up with a blues -type vocal of"Three O'Clock in the Morning". Anotherchange of pace is the offing of "My Cherie"by Al Martino. Two releases by Canadianperformers merit close attention. "WhereHas Love Gone" by Robbie Lane and "ILove Her So" by The Big Town Boys nowon Capitol. Malka & Joso fans will be happyto know that their second LP release isbeing readied for shipment. Their single"Ay Cosita Linda" pulled from their firstalbum is now making the rounds of radiostations.

    The Quality camp is still shakin' overthe first single of the Guess Whos and arenow bracing themselves for greater salesof the second release of this popular Winni-peg group. "Tossin' & Turnin' " gets thenod from radio stations coast to coast. Theinternational eye is wide open for this onealso. "Me and You" by The Regents isalso a hot contender on most charts acrossthe nation. It's time. for a follow-up."While I'm Away" by the Four 'Empenned by Canadian Bryan Olney is pick-ing up spotty action across the country.US action has also been very favourable."A Walk In The Black Forest" turned outto be one of those hits that creamed thecountry before it was considered a hit.Another story of another novelty tune sur-prising the trade.

    "Laurie" by Dickey Lee has GeorgeOffer of Apex talking to himself. Alreadypicked in Upper Canada it could be awinner. Al Mair informs us however that

  • there are two schools of thought on this re-lease. Some claim it's a "sick" recordothers like to describe it as a type ofghost story. Gord Lightfoot's "I'm NotSayin' " is fast becoming one of the mostpopular singles across Canada.(see CCCA)Jack Nitzche's "Senorita from Detroit" isan instrumental well worth a listen. TheSquires, already a well established soundaround Upper Canada come up with a NewYork produced single "Uh Uh".

    Phonodisc re-releases on Del-Fi theeight year old hit of the late Ritchie Va-lens, "Donna" f/s "La Bamba". TheSupremes latest, "Back In My Arms Again''would appear to have control of every topforty station in the nation. Another Tamla/Motown outing, "I Can't Help Myself" byThe Four Tops is fast acquiring hit pro-portions. Interesting LP releases fromPhonodisc include "My Kind Of Town" byJack Jones and the Burt Bacharach offer-ing of "Hit Maker". Not to mention thatDon Francks LP.

Evenadult products are getting the MOT treat-ment. Ad agencies are the first to realizewhat seemed to be teen music a few yearsago is becoming popular music and thesales potential of hit sounds will bringattention to and sell their clients product.

    when the commercial writers, musicians,and agency producers went after a big pro-fessional teen sound that unfortunatelydidn't have the teen feel. Above all, thesuccess of the teen sound has been theage and feeling that these young musiciansput into their work and the actual sound

    teen oriented producers lay down.The simplicity of their arrangements

    and the uncomplicated chord patterns andhip words are the biggest selling factors.

    NOT A HOUSEHOLD WORDIn the past year MOT has gained the

    status of being a household word, and afamily pastime. At the height of the Beatlephenominum, newspaper editors were issu-ing memos to their writers to maintain a highstandard of writing when it came to thisgroup. It was thought by many that thevalue of a pro-Beatle attitude would sellpapers, and keep readers, since the teeninfluence played such a great part in con-sumer decisions. One knock at this groupwould result in great piles of mail. Radiostations with the most dignified policyeither ignored the group, or discussed themwith reverance, even though they didn'tair their music. Top ratings for TV shows,whenever they appeared further indicatedthat the popularity of this group was world-wide and acceptable at any age level. Allthis was a contributing factor to the swingto the most up-to-date sound for radio andtelevision commercials. Today, the musictracks behind many adult spots have adefinite 1965 music influence.

    AGENCIES "HIP"Agencies, being in a very progressive

    business, even have gone to the point ofstaffing young people to advise at the teenlevel. Great amounts of motovative researchhave gone into up -dating the sound thatsells, and younger singers and musicianshave sprung up to sing the praises of thelaundry tub, the toilet bowl, and the clean-er engine. The gasoline consumer of to-morrow is 15 and 16 today. He will be 18and 19 in a very few years, and the agen-cies realize that hard-core consumer oftomorrow must be established today andthe way to get through is with teen music.

    ANYTHING FOR MONEYOften you'll hear the stately high brow

    GMP station blowing a rock and roll com-mercial followed by a sweet violin soundof Mantovani. Their policy doesn't permitthis sound for enjoyment, but bought timepermits anything.

    The Toronto Telegram has been singu-larly progressive in bringing young readersinto its fold with a weekly teen supplement"After Four". Again the teen reader of to-day will tomorrow be the adult family rea-der, and the householder and consumer thatthe Telegram and its advertisers will belooking for in two, three or four years.Again it's the youth of today that will bethe "Big Spenders" of tomorrow.

  • Hamilton: Mike Jaycockof CKOC finds a bigchange in the demandsof teenagers. Recordhops just don't seemto be making it. Theynow demand live bandsand entertainment. Ifyou happen to have allthis plus a teen nice -club, you have a fullhouse. "Rockin'Village" and "Shindig"seem to be the placesto go in the "Steel"town. The "Hawk'sNest" in Toronto and"Castle" in St. Kittsare also drawing the

    Hamilton area teenager. Mike adds "Withthis demand for live groups I think wewill find the record industry in Canadawill realize that there is plenty of talentright under their noses. On the Canadianscene, Mike sees great things for thenew Gord Lighfoot entry "I'M Not Sayin"'.Bobby Curtola's newest, "Walkin' WithMy Angel" looks like another winner forthe Lakehead talent. On the internationalscene Mike gives the nod to "Keep OnTryin" the new Bobby Vee entry, DelReeves' "Girl On The Billboard" and"Voodoo Woman" by Bobby Goldsboro.The number one sound at `0C is "Cryin'In The Chapel". Apparently the Hamiltonladies go for it and even the teens acceptit as being a nice sound. Says Mike"let's face it Elvis needs the money."

    Saint John: A new face, a greatnew sound at CHSJ these days. Thehousewives love Pat Donelan their new-est afternoon wooer. Pat was formerly atCFWB Fredericton.

    Peace River: Chuck Benson PD atCKYL is real happy over the fact that heis finally, on the mailing list of some ofthe never -before -heard of record compa-nies. Chuck makes the suggestion thatbecause of the power small radio stationshave over the populace, they could domuch to help find new talent and give itexposure. This is what 'YL has done inthe Peace country and have come up witha gal singer who is just ripe for signingthat dotted line for a recording contract.Johnny Harlow's latest is the big itemin the north country this week.

    Belleville: Dave Charles of CJBQfinds that at the local teen nice -spot,The "Crow's Nest", many new creationsseem to be happening. The latest is anew dance called, (what else) the "CrowDance". Ritchie Knight and the Midnightsdebuted this dance with Dave giving ademonstration (discotheque style) andfound the patrons picking it up easilymaking it now one of the most populardances. All they need is someone tocome up with the right material, perhapsa recording. The cream of Canadianrecording artists have appeared in Belle-ville regularly and their popularity is nowshowing with eight Canadian entries onthe CJBQ "Top 50". J.B. and The Play-boys have been the most exciting by farof any who have appeared at the "Crow'sNest". Return dates have been set for4

    Dee and The Yeomen The Countdowns,Luke and The Apostles and The BigTown Boys. The Fab Four have beenskedded for an appearance in June.

    Vancouver: Dick Clark's "Caravanof Stars" is shaping up to be a big smashfor CKLG. The show, to be held at theQueen Elizabeth Theatre, May 26, featuresDel Shannon, The Zombies, Shangri-las,The Executives and many other top ratedartists.

    St. John's: Jim Morrison, sans the"Jungle" has moved from CKEC to VOCM.One of the pleasures of working with theColonial System is the fact that theyreceive new releases as they are released.No more battling Canadian record compa-

    nies. A new hit parade survey may beforthcoming from this Newfoundland sta-tion. Good to hear from Newfoundland.

    London: Dick Williams chalks upanother success story for the Lively Guysat CFPL. A recent "Sidewalk Surfin"contest turned out to be one of the giantpromotions of the year. Even Bill Bradymanaged to stay in one piece, althoughhis watchamaycallit will be tender forsome time. The contest took place onSayvette's parking lot, May 1. Winnersreceived golden skate awards.

At the time, itdid not occur to me whatit was you were gettingat, and only recentlyhave I realized thatyou do not have thesupport of the entirerecord industry. Severalmajor companies are con-spicuous by their ab-sence as advertisers inRPM. This fact came tome after hearing a re-

    mark regarding a pro -RPM attitude wouldbe considered an anti-American attitudeby the United States affiliates of one re-cord company.

    I took a number of recent issues, andthe liberty of breaking them down againstyour rate sheet, and would I be prematurein assuming that RPM will soon be a thingof the past? I cannot see how this can beotherwise, unless you are working somekind of a miracle.

    I certainly admire Bob Martin's com-ments in the last issue, and his gallantryin speaking out with the support of hiscompany. Columbia, of course, are amongthe leaders of the industry.

    I would prefer the cloak of anonymityshould you reprint any part of this letter.RPM is a miracle. We don't know how youdo it."(ED: This letter is reprinted in its entiretyand came from another "leader of the in-dustry". The comments are surely sincere,and the request for anonymity will be com-plied with).

    "A thing of the past?" Possibly youare being a little too premature. Like mostthings Canadian, there is a great deal ofself-consciousness, regarding RPM, thatCanadians have not been able to overcome.

    Our experience with our friends to thesouth, have been most gratifying, and ex-cept for one US sheet inferring that "RPM

    is biting the hand that feeds us" (the re-ference was obviously to the US) we havenever had anything but the best of relation-ships with US record companies. Many aresubscribers. The anti-American stigma hasbeen hard to live down, but it must be re-membered, that most things pro -Canadiancan easily be tabbed anti -something -or -other. RPM's contribution to the Canadianindustry will stand on its own merits re-gardless of what happens.

    Lenny Welsh has a hitrecord in N.Y., but un-fortunately "Darling,Take Me Back" doesnot look like a nationalhit . . . "Is This What IGet for Loving You" byThe Ronettes sounds likeit could have been doneby The Righteous Bros....Tracey Dey's recordof "Hanky Panky" .hassmash written all over it.Upon a first hearing, itsounds like it could beanother "Name Game"...Talking about Shirley

    Had a very nice conversation withSkip Haymes, who told me he was headedfor a two week engagement at Harvey's inLake Tahoe... Teddy Randazzo waved tome as he was running down Broadway, butgave me no time to ask when we can ex-pect a new Little Anthony and The Imper-ials record... Tony Orlando is sure thatAtlantic Records is the right label for histalents. He was very enthused when wetalked about his Bert Berns produced re-cord, "Turn Around, Baby", which will bereleased in a few weeks.

    I'm sorry to say that The Grand OldOpry show at the N.Y. Paramount didn'tdraw the large crowds expected. I can tellyou though that Hank Snow and Kitty Wellsreally had the audience cheering... EydieGorme's next release, "Dance On By", wasrecorded in Nashville.
