Dear Friends,
There is a story told about a boy who wanted to learn his father’s
trade. His father was a burglar.
“Father,” he said, “You are getting older. One of these days, I shall
have to make a living for the family. It is time you showed me the tricks
of being a successful burglar.”
“Very well,” said the father, “you may come with me tonight when I
go to rob a house.”
When the family in the great house had turned out the lights and
gone to bed, the father and the son slipped in through a jimmied door.
The father shone his flashlight around and spied a great closet.
“Here,” he said to his son. “You go inside and see what you can
find that is of value.”
The boy stepped inside and began to search.
The father closed the door behind him and locked it.
Then the father left by the door they had entered, banged on it a
few times to waken the family, and disappeared into the night. The
family and the servants arose and turned on all the lights. They went
through the whole house, looking for the source of the noise.
The poor boy was distraught and puzzled. How would he ever
escape? But, being resourceful, he began making little noises in the
closet as if he were a mouse trying to gnaw through the wood. One of
the maids heard it and opened the door to catch the mouse. The
moment she did, the boy leapt through the door and bolted out of the
house.
As everyone pursued him through the yard, he paused to lift a large
stone and throw it into the well. His pursuers, hearing the splash,
assumed that the intruder had fallen into the well and they all gathered
around it to watch for him to surface.
Back at home again, the boy upbraided his father. “What kind of
terrible trick was that to pull on your own son?” he asked.
“You wanted to learn to be a burglar, didn't you?” ask the father.
“Well, I have taught you the most important thing you must learn, to be
resourceful on every occasion.”
Of course, we don’t really want to teach our kids to be nefarious as
they learn to grow into the adult world. But, we do need to offer them
some solid advice on what will help them not only to cope with the harsh
realities of life, but also be happy.
As I ponder what might be helpful for the present generation to
learn, it seems to me that one of the more practical pieces of advice we
can pass on is that life will indeed contain suffering which we cannot
escape. There fore, we must learn to cope with it as best we can, and
faith is the gift of God which will sustain us.
So many of us try to protect the children of today from any pain or
suffering. They, in turn, might learn that it is not necessary to accept or
bear it. What immense harm we can do to those who follow us if we
leave them with such a view of reality.
I often wonder, if God did not protect his own Son from the pain of
his passion and death, why would he step in and rescue us? Did not
God support Jesus with grace to bear his travails rather than protect
him? Surely the Lord would do no less for us.
Have a great week everyone!
Love,
Fr. Dave

ABOUT LITURGY
Memorial Day: May 30 is Memorial Day in the United
States. While we don’t want to turn the Sunday liturgy into
a patriotic celebration (as worthy as remembering our
fallen heroes is), it would be remiss on our part to let this
Sunday go by without any mention of the Monday holiday.
It is always appropriate to mention as part of the prayer of
the faithful an intention to mark such occasions. A model
intention might be worded, “That those who have died out
of loving service to their country may now enjoy
everlasting peace.”
We thank all Veterans, living and
deceased for their service to America
and God’s children around the world.
