The SMLR Gonfalonby John Burton Jr., Professor Emeritus

Rutgers School of Management and Labor Relations

The gonfalon (located on the platform) for the School of Management and Labor

Relations was designed to symbolize the mission of the school: to improve the

relationship between management and labor in order to serve the public. The three

colors used throughout the gonfalon represent the three parties interested in constructive

employment relations: labor (red), management (blue), and the public (gold).

The inner set of triangles represents the common and sometimes ineffective interaction

between labor and management and the consequences for the public. The shades of

red, blue, and gold in the inner triangles are muted and dark. The role of the School

of Management and Labor Relations is to improve the relationship. The School’s

contributions to the better relationship between management and labor and ultimately

to the benefit of the public is symbolized by the multi-pointed explosion of gold that

lies behind the triangles. The result of the school’s contributions to the improved

relationship between the participants in employment relations and to the public is

shown in the outer set of triangles. The shades of blue, red, and gold in the outer

triangles are bright and vivid.

The gonfalon was created in 1994 when the Institute of Management and Labor

Relations was transformed into the School of Management and Labor Relations. Dean

John Burton, Associate Dean Steven Director, and Assistant Dean Betty Lou Heffernan

were responsible for the concept and general design of the gonfalon. Kevin Rau, a

graphic artist and the husband of Assistant Professor Barbara Rau, helped translate the

concept into the final design.

Meet the Student Speakers

Niki Patel is receiving a master’s degree in human resource management (HRM) in October 2016. Niki was born in India and raised in Queens, NY and Edison, NJ. Niki served as president of the Rutgers University Society for Human Resource Management (RU SHRM) graduate chapter from spring of 2015 through spring of 2016. After receiving her bachelor’s degree in 2011 from Rutgers University, with a dual major in communication and sociology, Niki worked at Rutgers University Recreation as a business assistant until March 2015 and has since been working at Rutgers University Human Resources as a human capital management specialist.

Talia Schank has worked in community activism for 20 years, starting as a community educator and trainer. Her work has led her to student and political organizing, where she worked on a number of electoral campaigns, both for candidates and issue-based. Following this, she transitioned into non-profit fundraising, focusing on individual donor development. She has worked with, among others, Planned Parenthood of WI, the Sierra Club, Dēmos, and Community Voices Heard. Her range of experiences working toward social and economic justice led her to pursue a masters’ degree in employment and labor relations at Rutgers.

Evan Murphy is honored to be receiving his bachelor’s degree with a dual major in human resource management and sociology. He grew up in Hamburg, NJ, and after graduating from Wallkill Valley Regional High School in 2012, he enrolled at Rutgers. Here, he has been involved with Dance Marathon, the Residence Hall Association, and Greek life. Since September 2014, he has also served as a family liaison assistant at the New Brunswick-based Embrace Kids Foundation, which serves the non-medical needs of pediatric cancer and blood disorder patients. Evan will move to New York City this summer to begin his career as an associate in The Bank of New York Mellon’s Emerging Leaders Program. He will spend a year completing three rotations in different functional areas of human resources before getting a permanent placement in the bank’s HR department. Evan hopes to one day become a business executive and potentially launch a political career.

Erica Akitani-Bob is a student in both the School of Management and Labor Relations and the School of Arts and Sciences. She has been involved in several school organizations including the Residence Hall Association, Phi Alpha Delta-Pre Law Fraternity, and Colleges Against Cancer, among others. Outside of school, Erica has held internships in legislative and consulate offices, as well as startups and wealth/investment management firms. She is appreciative and thankful of the Rutgers community and plans to bring all she has learned in her future academic and career pursuits.
