Created and painted from a series of recent photographs of landscapes and of people, taken in San Diego and in the adjacent deserts, Cest la Vie proposes a series of snapshots of the way I see the place where I live.

    Out of FocusArtists Statement:

I initially started working with digital art when the rst one mega pixel cameras where introduced. I would take snapshots and than process them in the paint program that was included within Windows. At that time, the quality of the print was very poor. Very few of the images were ever printed. My, how times have changed!

I am now somewhat more re ned, I think. The process hasnt changed that much. You still take a digital image, though its with a better (and more expensive) DSLR. I sometimes take hundreds in a day. You now can re ne, alter, and change the image in so many different ways. In my case I use Photoshop CS3. And, I can now print these images on archival paper with lightfast inks...Wow! For increased permanence, I coat the image with a thick layer of gloss medium. Each image is from a snapshot I have taken. Very little editing (removing or adding objects) is performed. If there is a trash can in the picture it usually will remain. The hue, saturation, contrast etc. are altered so that you may not notice that its a trash can.

Currently, Im exploring the areas that are out of focus in macro snapshots. Im attempting to bring them out to compete with the main subject. There are amazing patterns in these areas.

Finally, I have a little fun titling the piece. Please excuse any deliberate spelling errors and non-words. As they say, there is poetry in art.

There it is in a nutshell, so to speak. Enjoy.

  • 5About Art from Artists by LJ SullivanIn the nal segment for guest artists Messenger and Lomakin, they were again challenged to take to the museum oor and make the tough decisions. Both were asked to choose their personal favorite out of all the ne, ne, ne art exhibited at SDAIs 2009 International Show and to discuss their selection. (Next issue: two more guest artists)

Messengers ChoiceMessengers Choice: The Ghost of the Little Black Dress by J. Vasconcellos

Among more complex and traditional pieces in the international show exhibition, the sculptural piece by Jude Vasconcellos titled The Ghost of the Little Black Dress might be overlooked, yet, I was immediately drawn to this beautifully evolved work. With a Zen like use of material (cheesecloth, wire, and a coat hanger), its strength is in its qualities of grace and ease.

The artist lives in the little town of Rutherford Ca. and I was curious so, contacted her for background information. She told me the materials she used were inspired by the cheesecloth and wire she uses in her backyard garden. She was looking at the cheesecloth and it began to look ghostly to her. The piece transpired easily from there and the wire placed at the hips represented the pain women go through to get into the little black dress I wouldnt know anything about that. I only know I thought it a wonderful work of art. Richard Messenger

Lomakins Choice: House of the White Irises by Katsy Johnson

There is not a clear winner for me in this Show, I liked several pieces equally, the ones like: Far Back a woodblock print by Makoto Abe; or a beautiful photograph by Alison Hahn Indehiscent; or Palm Study by Paul Nyerges. But it was House of the White Irises by Katsy Johnson

I chose to write about. This encaustic print looked so familiar to me that I rst thought it was done by a Russian born artist. From my very childhood I remember old photographs taken at the beginning of the 20th century ofRussian country houses called dacha. House of the White Irises instantly reminded me of the ever moving pictures of Russian Intelligentsia and their world destroyed forever after the Revolution of 1917.

The artists beautiful statement says that it is an abandoned house, but it does not look like one to me, because of the strongest associations with those turn of the century pictures I mentioned earlier. For me, as for many other Russians, the images like this one belong to the generation immortalized by Chekhov in his Plays and Stories. Looking at this photograph, so delicately and lovingly taken, where the use of encaustic makes it even more fragile and lost in time, I can still feel the warmth of the sun drenched old house, and I would imagine an orchard behind it (could it be a Cherry Orchard?), where the guests accompanied by the owners went to, and a seagull crying at a nearby lake, and a young girl confused in her feelings waiting for someone

Everything that Chekhov was poetizing, the Soviets took away from their people. That is why melancholy falls upon me as if I too lost something dear to me - something that I have never even known.
