Letter from the DirectorI have only been in San Diego for a little over a month, but I’m thrilled to have been so welcomed by the overwhelmingly gracious and kindhearted community of artists and arts administrators here. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I arrived, or even if I had made the right choice in leaving my life behind in NYC, but my first day on the job at SDAI I knew resolutely that I had made the right decision. I feel very lucky to work at such a great organization, located in arguably one of the best locations in San Diego. I have inherited such an amazing, hardworking, and dedicated staff and Board of Directors, and I certainly believe we have all the raw materials for future success.

My first few weeks on the job I have been really getting out into the community and immersing myself in all San Diego has to offer culturally (not to mention weekly

trips to all the fantastic dog beaches!) and meeting with as many artists and cultural producers as possible to see how SDAI can best serve a growing community of creative professionals. I see SDAI as a conduit, and facilitator of creative dialogue. I want to expand, hone, and redefine SDAI’s mission by offering more lectures, workshops, video screenings, performances, and cross-disciplinary events, solidifying SDAI as a destination for those who want to learn about what’s going on in regional art. Part of this is being open to changing those elements we are not yet successful at, but perhaps most importantly embracing that which we do best.

I look at SDAI as a hub for those who want to engage in artistic and community change. I think we can best do this by creating a quality presentation space for our

current members, and welcoming those into the fold that we have yet to engage. San Diego is fast becoming known as a destination for experimental new media artists, and to be able to give these local artists a dedicated space and forum for expression will only help broaden our mission. We are thus renovating our board room this summer and transforming it into a rotating project space—an experimental lab for site-specific installation, video, and sound. This space will give artists an opportunity to create and present new media work, giving local artists an opportunity to experiment, and perhaps even “fail” in a supportive environment. You will start to see some other physical changes to our space—this summer we are working with a top visual merchandiser from NYC to redesign our gift shop, both in our Balboa Park location and at the San Diego Art Department in North Park. We will soon be formalizing our consignment process and will have rotating highlighted artists, and as you’ll see in the newsletter we’re also taking calls for new work to be presented in the gift shop. I encourage those of you whom I have yet to meet with to please reach out to me—invite me over for a studio visit or just pop by my office to say hi. I welcome all of your feedback and suggestions as we all work to move SDAI forward to the next level. I look forward to seeing you soon! Working in the abstract, in shape, line, form and color, it’s about making choices, decisions, which, we as humans do on a regular basis. Turn left, turn right? Eat oatmeal or bacon, hot or cold, apply red or orange, here or there. Work in paint or charcoal, maybe mixed media. It’s always about choice. Lights, darks, contrast, color, no color. Add to, take away, burn a hole, stitch it up. I love how one thing leads to the next and we find ourself where we are and not where we were or thought we were going! The journey of creating, the pathway of an artist’s life.

When I am painting, I try to capture the essence of the moment. Some pieces, such as the triptych, ‘’DAWN’’, ‘’AFTERNOON’’, and ‘’EVENING’’, were begun with an idea in mind that I wanted to develop. Other paintings were inspired by a response to the moment. In either case, I find it is the process that gives me pleasure and satisfaction, and puts me in touch with my inner self.

Juror Talk Saturday, June 21st from 12pm-2pm in the gallery

Amir H. Fallah is an artist living and working in Los Angeles whose work is exhibited around the world. Fallah approaches his current paintings as an investigative, analytical histo-rian, though a knowingly imprecise one. He is interested in truthfulness and limitations, and his current body of work grapples with those issues in a way that almost seems backwards: by taking the mistakenly truthful photograph and converting it back into the always suspect, uncontestably subjective medium of painting.

Fallah begins his process with field research, entering people’s homes and assembling “evidence” of their stories and identities from among their things. He particularly gravitates toward those mundane objects that seem loaded with sentimental meaning: a worn afghan, an idiosyncratic plant, a figurine, a doll or running shoes. His subjects appear in dramatically Neoclassical poses, lounging across a wooden table or perched on a pedestal. To protect his sub-jects from being implicated in his own misinterpretations or far-flung imagin-ings, he usually cloaks them, covering or at least surrounding their faces and much of their bodies with fabric. In his studio he then layers his canvases with paper and works back and forth between collage and painting, canvases quickly become dense, visceral and idiosyncratic. They reflect his own cultural alliances: references to Persian miniatures may appear in the form of careful borders along the edge of a canvas, and blankets may start to resemble the long veils associated with Eastern cultures.

An application workshop will be held at SDAI:MOLA, on Thursday, May 15th from 6pm-7pm for those who are interested in submitting their work and need guidance with the process. (see new submission guidelines)

SDAD workspace access - $100/monthly membership (juried application; $75 for seniors, students, and art teachers)

SDAI Submission GuidelinesOn a regular basis, SDAI asks artists to submit work for juried, themed, and curated exhibitions. On average, a new exhibition is featured every six weeks. Typically, each exhibition consists of work submitted by regional artists, in addition to two artist solo exhibitions. Artists may enter up to two artworks per show. While there are no limitations on medium, please check with SDAI if you are submitting work that is over 8’ in any direction, is over 50 lbs., or requires any particular AV equipment.

All exhibitions are celebrated with an opening reception for the public, for which all participating artists are encouraged to attend.

Non-SDAI Member Artwork Submission Requirements:• $10 entry fee per artwork, limit 2• artwork must be wired or “ready to hang”• all media is acceptable, but please contact SDAI staff if you would like to submit video, performance, sound, or installation

Dare to Reuse Art ContestFrom June 13-July 13, 2014 The San Diego Art Institute will be showcasing student work from the Dare to Reuse Art Contest of 2014. This event, organized by the San Diego Office of Education and San Diego County Department of Environmental Services, presents artwork from students in grades 3-12 using recycled materials. The participating schools are Carmel Del Mar Elementa-ry, Central Elementary, Dingeman Elementary, Encanto Elementary, Field El-ementary, Golden Hill Middle, Holmes Elementary, Kearny High, King-Chavez Elementary, Mann Middle, Marshall Middle, Pershing Middle, The Preuss School, San Diego High, and Shoal Creek Elementary.

The David G. Fleet Young Artist Gallery provides a venue for art from public, private and parochial schools (K-12) throughout San Diego City and County in conjunction with SDAI’s art and education programs.

San Diego Art Department 2014 SUMMER ART CAMP! Greetings!

The People’s Choice Poem Performance Awards went off with a lyrical bang in February and April for National Poetry Month. Cash winners included Viet Mai, Chris Vannoy, and John Simmons. The shows also featured local authors Jerrica Escoto, Gill Sotu, and Steve Kowit.

In June, participants will once again be invited to read/perform one poem under three minutes long. Audience members will choose their favorite poem based on content and performance. Props, artwork, singing, music, dancing, all accompaniment is allowed and anything goes. Top poem performances (the poems that receive the most votes) win $50. Audience members will be encouraged to hoot for their favorites and try to influence the rest of the audience. This event is co-sponsored by Poetry International. Writers/artists who would like to participate can get their names in the hat ahead of time at [email protected] or sign in on the night of the show. Fifteen spots for The People’s Choice Poem Performance Award will be decided by lottery. Gill Sotu will provide music for the night. Gill has opened for Grammy-nominated legend Sheila E, and partnered and performed with the San Diego Symphony. He has been commissioned to create numerous poetry pieces for the United Way of San Diego and performed for TEDx San Diego in December 2013. Gill has been featured on NBC 7’s Art Pulse TV and was named the 2012 & 2013 San Diego Raw Performing Artist of the Year. There will be goodies and wine as always. • Joe Nalven, John Valois, Renata Spiazzi Joe Nalven, John Valois, Renata Spiazzi and other Digital Art Guild members who have participat-ed in SDAI events are participating in Filters and Masks, an upcoming exhibit at the Pacific Beach Taylor Library. The show was juried by Chantel Paul, assistant curator at the Museum of Photo-graphic Arts, and features the work of 24 artists from across the nation. The show runs from May

31 to July 31, 2014. It will be featured in the KPBS Visual Arts Brief for the month of June. The tagline for the exhibit is: “Filters and Masks is a double concept: the artist’s vision of social and natural reality, and the toolsets used in their creation.” The Digital Art Guild is a program of the San Diego Art Institute. A Call for Artwork for the Gift Shop:

San Diego Art Institute is look-ing for new work for its gift shop at the Museum of the Living Artist in Balboa Park. Our shop features only locally-made art and artisan wares from the area, and 55% of the proceeds go directly to the artists. Items that we are particularly looking for are: screen-printed T-shirts/tote bags, limited-edition prints, ceramics and han made sculp-ture and jewelry.

We would also like to hear your suggestions.. do you have an interesting design that you’d like to see on a T-shirt or tote bag but don’t know how to real-ize it? The Life-Drawing program at SDAI:MOLA is a wonderful weekly event that welcomes artists to practice their drawing or painting skills, and sketch from a live model. The male & female models fill a wide spectrum, with a variety of body types, age groups, and ethnicities. The program runs on Sundays and Mondays from 6-9 pm and the cost for one day’s session is $5.
