coached sessions at the Centre, and then
on the last day their experience is put to
the test with a surf session at Porthcawl
beach.
Extra paddle activities, White Water
Rafting and Indoor Surfing sessions are
also offered during school holidays.Otherwise why not pop into the café bar
and just enjoy a drink and a bite to eat on
the balcony and watch others take on the
white water challenge?
Children’s paddle activities start from
as little as £10 a session, or you can try
White Water Rafting and Indoor Surfingfrom £25 per person. To find out more
and to make a booking contact the

Having the kids off over the summer
holidays can be costly. When there’s a wet day, or you just needto calm it down a bit, art and craft activitiesat home can come into their own. They arefree and get kids thinking about reusing thingsthey‘ve finished with before recycling them
A quick trawl around the house can unearthsome great supplies. Why not make it part ofthe adventure?
Cereal boxes are nice thin cardboard, letters
that are only printed on one side becomedrawing paper, while dessert pots couldn’t bebetter for paint.
When it comes to what to make themes canwork well. To make musical instruments thinkdrums or shakers, so tubes (loo roll, Pringles)or large yoghurt pots that can be filled withanything that’ll make a noise are great.
Or the theme could be about different skills, cutting and weaving are popular for smallerchildren. Crisp packets and those foil pouchesthat Capri sun drinks come in are good here asthey can be cut into strips.
To make a collage, the string bags that orangescome in, bubble wrap from strawberry traysand scrunched up crisp packets are all unusual
textures. Use different materials as part of a
‘story in a box’ project, about the beach, or afavourite CBeebies show.
Why not leave it to their imagination some-times with a ‘what can you make with this?’challenge.
A last top tip is to always try to have some-where to store any ongoing project so thatyou don’t have to move it every time you needthe table to fold the washing on or eat tea at,a sofa on legs is always a good place to push
things under!Sam Harrison

Respect, what is respect? An easyway to think of respect is to treatother people in a way that weourselves would like to be treated.
Some of the ways we can respecteach other are listed below:
Listen to others when they are tellingyou their ideas/opinions, withoutinterrupting, critising, or pokingfun at.
Try not to gossip or tell lies aboutothers, as this can hurt a person’sfeelings.
Give a compliment when someonehas tried really hard at something.
The trying is what counts.Accept we are all different. We all look different, and all havedifferent personalities. Being unique isfabulous!

The Vale of Glamorgan Council aims to keepfoster children in the Vale, rather than findingplacements in other counties. When a childmoves into foster care outside their owncounty, they leave their family, their friends, their school and their support network.
As part of the campaign, the council appointedfoster carer, Kay Griffiths MBE, as one of its‘fostering ambassadors’ for the Vale. Kay, whofosters with her husband David, said:
“My husband and I made that call to fosteringservices more than 35 years ago and have neveronce regretted it. “Every child deserves thechance to have a happy and fulfilled life and somechildren are not able to live with their own fami-lies for different reasons. “Foster care has a hugeimpact on a child, whether it’s for a few weeksor for years. As a foster carer, you have the
opportunity to give a child happy memories fora lifetime, no matter what has happened before,or what may happen later in their lives. For myhusband and I, it has been a privilege.”
The Vale council’s fostering team welcomesapplications from people from all walks of life, whether you are interested in providing fostercare for respite, emergency, short-term or long-term placements.
What are the requirements to be a foster carer?
Do you have at least one spare bedroom, astable lifestyle and access to transport?
Are you a great communicator, with patienceand tolerance?
Have you got energy and motivation?
Do you have time and commitment?
Can you empathise with a child and manage chal-lenging behaviour?
If the answer is yes, the council’s fostering team
would love to hear from you.
What do foster carers receive?
Dedicated support 24 hours a day, 7 days aweek, 52 weeks a year
Competitive rates of pay
Comprehensive training leading to professionalqualifications
Access to monthly support forums, where youcan share experiences with other foster carers
Support from our fostering team, including yourown allocated supervising social worker

John’s Cafe is the oldest cafe
on Barry Island and one of
the oldest cafes in Wales.
It was opened in 1928 by
the John family and built its
reputation on good food,
good service & cleanliness.
During World War II the
cafe was used as barracks forservicemen ariving at Barry
Dock. Over the years the cafe
has served many generations
of families, both local and as
holiday makers who return
year after year.
It has recently been given a
fresh new look, undergoing
a complete refurbishment to
bring an early 20th century
cafe into the 21st century,
whilst retaining a traditional
seaside cafe feel. The current
owners Carl & Graham
continue with the original
cafe philosophy offering good
food, good service, cleanliness
and value for
money. They
now sell a large
range of cakes
and pastries
which are a great
accompaniament
to an afternoon
coffee. Thecafe offers a
large outside
seating area with
fantastic sea
views - a wonderful place
to sit and watch the world
go by whilst eating one of
their famous homemade ice
cream desserts. All the ice
cream desserts are made with
Mario’s award winning ice
cream and are mouthwatering
on a hot sunny afternoon.
The cafe still offers all the
traditional seaside fayre - Cod
& Chips, Sausage & chips,
Egg & Chips, but still to this
day use only homemade
chips. The roast meals are a
particular favourite with the
regulars whilst a lighter option
could be a Panini with their
homemade coleslaw. A warm
welcome awaits you at the
OLDEST & the BEST cafe onBarry Island.

Cyberbullying is when someone uses
technology, like the internet or a mobile
phone, to deliberately hurt, humiliate, harass,
intimidate or threaten someone else. It is
different from bullying at school or in the
community because it can happen at any time
of the day or night and it may feel like youcan’t get away from it. This may leave you
feeling scared and unsafe at home.
Top 10 tips if you are being cyberbullied
1) Tell an adult you trust if you are beingcyberbullied
2) Don’t respond or retaliate to bullying messages– it could make things worse
3) Block users who send you nasty messages4) Save abusive emails or messages (or texts) youreceive
5) Make a note of dates and times you receivebullying messages, as well as details you have of theuser’s ID and the url.
6) Don’t pass on any cyberbullying videos ormessages – this is cyberbullying
7) If you are bullied repeatedly change your userID, or profile, and use a name that doesn’t give anyinformation away about you
8) Visit CyberMentors https://cybermentors.org.uk/ – you can report any cyberbullying you see tocybermentors even if it isn’t targeted at you.
9) You can talk to someone at Child Line or getonline safety advice at http://www.childline.org.uk/talk/Pages/Talk.aspx
10) http://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/ is anothervery useful website for children and young peoplestaying safe online

Brighten up a room with this quick and easyrecycled craft idea which uses an old foil pie
plate and sweet wrappers!
Care should be taken with very young chil-
dren as the points of the “sun” can be sharp.
You will need:
Foil pie plate
Sweet wrappers
Glue
Needle and thread
Cut triangles around the sides of the pie plate
making a set of points. Fold out the points to
make your sun shape.
Glue sweet wrappers to each point of the sun.
Don’t worry about cutting them to shape: just
trim when they have dried.
Decorate the center of the sun by gluing onsome scrunched up sweet wrappers. Punch a
small hole and thread a loop of thread through
the top of the sun to hang.
With thanks, from www.activityvillage.co.uk
