Alleluia, alleluia!

Happy the poor in spirit;

the kingdom of heaven

is theirs! Alleluia!

It is the Lord who keeps faith for ever, who is just to those who are oppressed. It is he who gives bread to the hungry, the Lord, who sets prisoners free. R.

It is the Lord who gives sight to the blind, who raises up those who are bowed down.

It is the Lord who loves the just, the Lord, who protects the stranger. R.

The Lord upholds the widow and orphan

but thwarts the path of the wicked. The Lord will reign for ever,

Zion’s God, from age to age. R.

The cheerful giver

The first reading of this weekend depicts the widow’s offering. The poor widow of Zarephat offers prophet Elijah, who is so hungry, a bread to eat. She was so kind to share with him from whatever little food she had. The prophet blessed her generosity saying, 'The jar of flour shall not go empty, nor the jug of oil run dry’. He who said ‘give you shall receive’, blessed her a hundred fold.

The second reading presents Jesus Christ offering himself. This is the total surrender to the Father. As we read in Philippians 2:6 though he was in the form of God, he did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant. He who prayed “ Not my will, but thine be done, will bless us to seek God’s will.

In the Gospel we see Jesus praising a widow who offered two small coins. I don’t think Christ literally appreciated the widow for offering even the last penny she had. But he praises her complete trust in the Lord. Jesus commends the widow because of her gener-ous heart. What God truly wants from us is something deeper: He wants our love; He wants us to trust in Him.

The poor widow did not just share some of her abundance; Her prayer was “Lord, you are my good shepherd, and I will follow wherever you lead.” That’s the kind of generosity God wants to see flourish in each one of us: the generosity by which we give to God not just our stuff, but our heart. The Lord loves a cheerful giver.

PARISH SYNOD DELEGATES: EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST

The first Diocesan Synod is planned for next year from Friday to Sunday afternoon on the long weekend in June (31 May – 3 June). Currently the results of the consultations about possible topics for the Synod are being finalised, with Parish Pastoral Councils prioritising them. From this step, the Synod theme will be finalised.

Consultations to hear people’s views on the theme will be held in the first part of 2019. The purpose of the Synod will be to propose practical steps the Diocese might take to address whatever issues emerge from this consultation.

Synod delegates Key to the Synod will be delegate from parishes. Parishioners interested in being appointed by the Bishop as delegates form their parish are invited to nominate. There will be between one and three delegates per parish, depending on the parish size.

Nominations forms are available from the Parish priest. The aim will be to have parish delegates who reflect the face of the Diocese – young and not so young; migrant groups; different parish ministries.

Please consider nominating and seek a nomination form from the Parish priest. Nominations close on Sunday 25 November.

God bless, Bishop Gerard.

New Nativity Set for the Church

We are considering purchasing a new 81cm fibreglass nativity set for the church. Since this will be a considerable expense, I would appreciate if anyone could make a donation towards this project. Your generous help would be appreciated very much. Donations can be made at the parish office.

Fr. Theo.

MercyCare is a leading not-for-profit Catholic provider of aged care, family, health,

disability and community services. We understand how important it is for people to remain independent in their own home, and with the many changes that have occurred in aged care over the past few years, we know that this can be a very confusing, overwhelming time for everyone. Our Community and Home Support services are here to simplify the process. We have a range of flexible services, and can even help individuals over the age of 65yrs to access Government funded assistance. Support can include everything from social activities, keeping up with household tasks, and even in-home nursing and medication management. Support is also available to carers when the time comes to take a break. Please contact Samantha from MercyCare to discuss the options that are available to help you and your loved ones. What do people do?

Many Australians stop what they are doing at exactly 11am in their local times on November 11 each year to dedicate a minute of silence for those who died in war, especially soldiers from as far back as World War I. Those who join in this act of remembrance include teachers, students, politicians, and workers of public and private sector enterprises.

Many people wear artificial poppies on the day and key political figures make speeches in remembrance of the nation’s fallen heroes. Services are held at 11am at war memorials in suburbs and towns across the country, at which the “Last Post” is played by a bugler and a one-minute silence is observed. Remembrance Day has been partly eclipsed by ANZAC Day as the national day of war commemoration.

Symbols

Red poppies are worn on blazers, shirts, jumpers and other items of clothing on Remembrance Day to remember those who died during a war. Poppies were among the first plants that came from the battlefields of northern France and Belgium during World War I. Some people believed the popular myth that poppies were rich in their redness because they blossomed from grounds that were saturated with soldiers’ blood.

Remembrance Day in Australia is dedicated to all who died as a result of war, particularly from World War I onwards. A minute of silence is dedicated to the deceased, especially for soldiers who died fighting to protect the nation. Remembrance Day is annually observed on November 11 although it is not a public holiday.
