Receiving Communion All who seek God's mercy are welcome to receive the holy communion at St Mark's. Both normal and gluten-free wafers are available; as is wine from the common chalice and grape juice from individual cups. If you find it difficult to come to the chancel, communion can be brought to you in the pew. If you do not wish to receive, you are welcome to come to the communion rail for a blessing – cross your arms on your chest.

Monks, Museums & Monasteries Revd Dr Max Wood hosts a tour in Italy in June 2018. See flyer in foyer.

2018 Floral Memorials It is our practice to remember past members and loved ones through a floral memorial. It is an opportunity to give thanks to God for the life of those loved and lost, and to recall shared relationships. The memorial gift is in the form of an annual donation to cover the cost of flowers that adorn the sanctuary for Sunday worship. It is normally recognised in the weekly newsletter Connections, during the Intercessions and in the Notices. If you would like to enquire about a memorial in 2018, please speak to Barbara Falloon or Jill Brown.

Christmas cheer in nursing homes The three nursing homes we visit each month have all moved the scheduled times of their December services closer to Christmas, in the hope that more residents than usual will come, especially if we are able to sing carols. For this to happen, we will need your help. There is a list in the foyer of the dates and times, and we ask that you come and help lead the singing of a few carols. You will also be able to help hand out the Christmas cards which Fay Sprague has donated and personalised, and chat to the residents, many of whom have few visitors. We will have carols at any of the services for which three or four people volunteer to come. Alison Clark will accompany us on her guitar at one or two of the services, and Lois and Robert have recorded the music on the church organ. The dates and times are: • The Bay Nursing Home, Princes Highway, Blakehurst Tuesday 19 December, 11.00am • Blakehurst Nursing Home, Cheddar St, Blakehurst Wednesday 20 December, 2.30pm • St Bede’s Hostel, Russell Lane, South Hurstville Thursday 21 December, 11.00am.

Douglas Golding [email protected] Mary Andrews Village Christmas service will be on Sunday 24 December 3.30pm.

Second Sunday of Advent

Gathering in God's name

Welcome and greeting by the Rector

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Lighting of Advent Wreath

The second candle is lit by a member of the

congregation

As we prepare for his coming,

we light this second candle

to remind us of the prophets who foretold the birth of the Messiah.

Presider

Blessed are you, Sovereign Lord, just and true,

to you be all praise and glory for ever!

Of old you spoke by the mouth of your prophets

but in our days you speak through your Son

whom you have appointed the heir of all things.

Grant us, your people, to walk in his light

that we may be found ready and watching

when he comes again in glory and judgment;

for you are our light and our salvation.

Blessed be God for ever.

Confession

Remain standing for Confession – Assistant

When the Lord comes, he will bring to light things now hidden in darkness, and

disclose the purposes of the heart. In that light we pause, examine our conscience

and confess our sins.

Pause for reflection

Lord Jesus, you came to gather the nations into the peace of your kingdom.

Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.

You come in word and sacrament to strengthen us in holiness.

Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy.

You will come in glory with salvation for your people.

Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. The Promise of His Glory, C of E

Second Sunday of Advent

Gathering in God's name

Welcome and greeting by the Rector

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Lighting of Advent Wreath

The second candle is lit by a member of the

congregation

As we prepare for his coming,

we light this second candle

to remind us of the prophets who foretold the birth of the Messiah.

Presider

Blessed are you, Sovereign Lord, just and true,

to you be all praise and glory for ever!

Of old you spoke by the mouth of your prophets

but in our days you speak through your Son

whom you have appointed the heir of all things.

Grant us, your people, to walk in his light

that we may be found ready and watching

when he comes again in glory and judgment;

for you are our light and our salvation.

Blessed be God for ever.

Confession

Remain standing for Confession – Assistant

When the Lord comes, he will bring to light things now hidden in darkness, and

disclose the purposes of the heart. In that light we pause, examine our conscience

and confess our sins.

Absolution

Almighty and merciful Lord, grant us pardon + and forgiveness of all our sins,

time for amendment of life, and the grace and strength of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Advent ring (TiS 289 verse 1)

‘Christmas is coming’

the Church is glad to sing

and let the Advent candles

brightly burn in a ring

1. The first is for God's promise

to put the wrong things right,

and bring to earth's darkness

the hope of love and light.

'Christmas is coming' …

2. The second for the prophets,

who said that Christ would come

with good news for many

and angry words for some.

'Christmas is coming' …

Sentence, prayer of the day and readings – from Readings Sheet.
