Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson
She was a sweet old lady visiting the sacristy after morning Mass asking
that her simple plastic rosary be blest. She had bought it after a healing ser-
vice over the weekend led by someone whose name I didn’t recognize.
Rather than scandalize her with any of my skeptical thoughts, I stuck with
the blessing task and sent her on her way.
I thought of that brief encounter as I reflected on today’s first and third
Readings about healing in general and Jesus’ healings in particular. Look-
ing for healing of what ails us is as natural as feeling tired after a long day.
“Our natural business lies in escape” said St. Thomas More at a crucial
point in the play “A Man for All Seasons.” No doubt about it. We don’t like
pain. That’s why we often seek compromise with difficult decisions. Why
we consciously delay any visit to the doctor for fear of what he may dis-

Ella era una dulce anciana que visitó la sacristía después de Misa de la ma-
ñana pidiendo que su sencillo rosario de plástico sea bendecido. Ella lo hab-
ía comprado después de un servicio de sanación durante el fin de semana
conducido por alguien cuyo nombre no reconocí. En lugar de su escandali-
zarla con cualquiera de mis pensamientos escépticos, me quedé con la tarea
de bendición y siguió su camino.
Pensé en ese breve encuentro, reflexioné en la primera y tercera lecturas de
hoy acerca de la sanidad en general y las curaciones de Jesús en particular.
Buscando curación de lo que nos aflige es tan natural como la sensación de
cansancio después de un largo día. "Nuestro negocio natural es una mentira
de escape", dijo Santo Tomás More en un punto crucial en la obra "Un
hombre para la eternidad." No hay duda al respecto. No nos gusta el dolor.
Es por eso que a menudo buscamos el compromiso con las decisiones difí-
ciles. ¿Por qué demoramos conscientemente cualquier visita al médico por
miedo a lo que él pueda descubrir.

While I have to respect their decisions, I remain puzzled
about why some believers insist on seeking out faith heal-
ers. Not only because doing so is out of step with the ordi-
nary way we seek relief of physical ills, but also because
there is an implicit denial of our Catholic understanding that
our sufferings are meant to be a share in Christ’s. That
would make it a badge of honor. Many saints have believed
so, beginning with St. Paul in Colossians 1:24. Perhaps I’ve
grown skeptical based on cinematic depictions of the travel-
ling salesman with his wagonload of fake cure-all potions.
In times of a multi-billion dollar drug industry, I think it
behooves us to think about the place of pain–all kinds of it–
in our lives. Nobody escapes pain, no matter what kind or
degree. Since the gates of Eden closed behind a sadly de-
parting Adam and Eve, pain has been a part of the human
story. Here on earth we are definitely located in a “valley of
tears”, as the “Hail, Holy Queen” prayer describes it.
How do we acquire a saint’s perspective on the matter? It
seems to me that comes only through faith and prayer. Be-
lieving and praying yield an ability to view pain as a con-
nector with Christ that makes it redemptive. That combina-
tion is “healthcare for the soul.” Our level of sanctity may
preclude us from out rightly seeking pain, as some saints
did. But when pain comes our way, we should at least try to
accept it like we would the shabbily dressed fellow held up
as an example by St. James as a way of being counter intui-
tive and genuinely Christian.
St. Mark cautions us in the Gospel about taking Jesus
merely as a healer. He is so much more. The centurion at
Calvary will proclaim the whole truth near the end of
Mark’s Gospel when he stands at the foot of the cross.
Come to think of it, that’s the perfect place where we need
to place ourselves to learn the potential of pain.
Meanwhile, we have a summary reflection of all this in the
following little quip: “A Christian is like a teabag – not
much good until it has gone through hot water.”

Aunque tengo que respetar sus decisiones, me quedo perplejo
acerca de por qué algunos creyentes insisten en la búsqueda de
curanderos. No sólo porque al hacerlo está fuera de la forma ordi-
naria de buscar alivio a los males físicos, sino también porque
hay una negación implícita en nuestra comprensión católica de
que nuestros sufrimientos significan ser una parte de Cristo. Eso
merecería una insignia de honor. Muchos santos han creído así,
empezando por San Pablo en Colosenses 1:24. Tal vez he crecido
escéptico basado en las representaciones cinematográficas del
comerciante viajero con su carreta llena de falsas pociones que lo
cura todo.
En tiempos de la industria multimillonaria de la droga, creo que
es correcto que pensemos en lugar del dolor-de todo tipo- en
nuestras vidas. Nadie escapa del dolor, no importa qué tipo o
grado. Desde que las puertas del Edén se cerraron detrás de una
triste partida de Adam y Eva, el dolor ha sido parte de la historia
humana. Aquí en la tierra definitivamente estamos ubicados en
un "valle de lágrimas", como la oración del "Salve" lo describe.
¿Cómo adquirimos la perspectiva de un santo en esta materia?
Me parece que viene sólo a través de la fe y la oración. Creer y
rezar concede la capacidad de ver el dolor como un conector con
Cristo que lo hace que sea redentor. Esa combinación es el
"cuidado de la salud para el alma." Nuestro nivel de santidad nos
puede impedir rotundamente buscan el dolor, como lo hicieron
algunos santos. Pero cuando el dolor se nos presenta, por lo me-
nos debemos tratar de aceptarlo como los compañeros mal vesti-
dos, como lo presenta un ejemplo de San Santiago una forma de
ser intuitivamente opuesto y genuinamente cristiano.
San Marcos nos advierte en el Evangelio acerca de tomar a Jesús
simplemente como un sanador. Él es mucho más. El centurión en
el Calvario proclama toda la verdad cerca del final del Evangelio
de Marcos, cuando se encuentra al pie de la cruz. Ahora que pien-
so en ello, ese es el lugar perfecto donde tenemos que ponernos
nosotros mismos para aprender el potencial del dolor.

ST. JOSEPH SEMINARY ANNUAL COLLECTION
WEEKEND OF SEPTEMBER 12 – 13, 2015 The annual collection for Saint Joseph’s Seminary will
be taken up next weekend, September 12-13.
Since its opening in 1896, the message of Jesus Christ
has been proclaimed, lived and celebrated by the dedi-
cated and committed priests of the Archdiocese of New
York who have studied and received their theological
education and formation at Saint Joseph Seminary.
The cost of nurturing and training our future priests is an
investment for tomorrow that all of us need to share.
Please give prayerful consideration to this year’s annual
seminary appeal. Our priests have responded to a very
special call to serve, guide, and teach so as to share with
others the mystery of God’s love for all of us. Your sup-
port during their time of preparation is deeply appreci-
