St. Teresa of Jesus (Teresa of Ávila)

Feast day: October 15 Teresa of Ávila, also called Saint Teresa of Jesus, baptized as Teresa

Sánchez de Cepeda y Ahumada (28 March, 1515 – 4 October, 1582),

was a prominent Spanish mystic, Roman Catholic saint, Carmelite nun,

an author of the Counter Reformation and theologian of contemplative life through

mental prayer. She was a reformer of the Carmelite Order and is considered to be a

founder of the Discalced Carmelites along with John of the Cross.

In 1622, forty years after her death, she was canonized by Pope Gregory XV and on

27 September 1970, was named a Doctor of the Church by Pope Paul VI. Her books,

which include her autobiography (The Life of Teresa of Jesus) and her seminal work

El Castillo Interior (trans.: The Interior Castle) are an integral part of Spanish Renais-

sance literature as well as Christian mysticism and Christian meditation practices as

she entails in her other important work, Camino de Perfección (trans.: The Way of

Perfection).

After her death, the cult of Saint Teresa was also known in Spain during the 1620s

due to the religious claim and debate of national patronage versus Saint James Mata-

moros. Teresa is revered as a Doctor of prayer. The mysticism in her works exerted

a formative influence upon many theologians of the following centuries, such as Fran-

ces of Sales, Fenelon and Port-Royalists.

Saint Teresa, who reported visions of Jesus and Mary, was a strong believer in the

power of holy water and wrote that she used it with success to repel evil and tempta-

tions.

prominente santa católica mística española, monja carmelita, autora de la

Contrarreforma y teóloga de la vida contemplativa con la oración mental. Ella fue

una reformadora de la Orden Carmelita y es considerada como una de las fundadoras

de las Carmelitas Descalzas, junto con Juan de la Cruz.

World Mission Sunday

Next Weekend, October 17-18

A Second Collection to support the

missionary work of the Society of the

Propagation of the Faith

The Catholic Church is a missionary church. Al-

though we often think of the missions in foreign

lands, in reality each one of us becomes a mis-

sionary at Baptism. We are called to share our

Catholic faith with others.

The needs of the church in the developing world

are many. The church is growing in Africa and

parts of Asia. The church of Latin America, tra-

ditionally Catholic countries, needs your prayers

and financial support to continue its work.

Men and women, religious and lay, go from our

country to bring the Good News of Jesus Christ to

peoples throughout the world. They also help

people who live in poor situations to improve

their lives. We thank you for your support to the

Missions in next weekend’s second collection.

PARISH COUNCIL RAFFLE WINNERS Thank you all for your participation in the recent Parish Council Raffle. Here are the names of the winners:

The raffle realized $13,532 (including donations) toward the cost of repairing the church bell tower.

La Iglesia Católica es una iglesia misionera. Aunque a

a través del mundo. Ellos también ayudan a personas

que viven en situaciones pobres, a mejorar sus vidas.

The Social Action Committee is looking for a physically able man who is willing to volunteer at the Food Pantry a few hours during the week to accept and pick up deliveries. The Social Action Committee is already preparing for the holiday. The Thanksgiving menus will be put out on October 24. Distribution of holiday food will be on November 7, 14, and 21.
