Superfoods – General Info

• Before reaching the market, all SuperfoodsTM nutritional supplements and special nutrition foods submit a special portfolio to the Hellenic Organisation for Medicines. Then they receive the special marketing authorisation number for nutritional supplements, which is called “notification number”.

The portfolio contains all the information and the certificates that are necessary in order for the product to be considered safe and of high quality. The factory where we produce our products holds a GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) certificate, which is the strongest certificate a productive unit of nutritional supplements and medicines can hold in the whole world.

Superfoods – General Info• In addition, our products hold a GMO certificate, which means that they do not contain

genetically modified organisms, and a TSE certificate, which means that they do not contain ingredients of animal origin which are to blame for bovine spongiform encephalopathy.

Since the spring of 2009 we hold a Qways (Quality Ways) certificate for our ability to distribute biological products and lastly, for every batch of products there is a certificate which certifies that they are free of microbes and harmful metals.

Hippophaes Eubias™ - Introduction Hippophae rhamnoides is one of the oldest land plants, dated

back to the ice age. First reports referring to its therapeutic effects appear in the 4th century B.C. According to historical sources, Hippophae was part of Alexander the Great soldiers’ diet. It was observed that sick and injured horses were healed by leaves and fruit of this plant. References of its use as drug are also found in classical Tibetan and Chinese medicine; other sources report that in the 13th century Jenkins Khan had been using it in his campaigns. It was not until 1929 that the first biochemical analysis of Hippophae fruits took place, and since then, our knowledge of its medicinal properties is increasing. Nowadays, Hippophae is one of the most prestigious plants of modern alternative medicine.

Hyppophaes Eubias™ - As a food Supplement

Hippophae rhamnoides, also known as sea buckthorn, is a member of the Elaeagnaceae family. It germinates as wild large shrub in Eurasia; oil of its fruits is extracted by crushing, no chemicals added. According to biochemical analysis made, Hippophae oil contains more than 190 nutrients and organic substances. The Astra Medical Hellas company disposes the nutritional supplement named Hippophae Eubias™, containing 350 mg Hippophae ramnoides oil extract/ capsule (TD No 75-09). It is also available in powder form (TD No 59-09).

Hippophae rhamnoides contains vitamin C, alpha-tocopherol, large amount of carotenoids and vitamin E, mineral elements (K, Na, Mg, Ca, Fe, Zn, Se), monosaccharides sugars, organic acids, free amino-acids, volatile compounds, various flavonoids (quercetin, myricetin and kaempferol), fatty acids, triacylglycerol, glycerolphospholipids, phytosterols, zeaxanthin esters, and phelonic compounds.

Various in vitro and in vivo studies clearly demonstrate that H.

rhamnoides L. has antioxidant activity. The leaf extract of this plant protects significantly male albino rats from chromium induced oxidative injury. Hexane extract of H. rhamnoides L. fruits has shown to inhibit nicotine-induced oxidative stress in rat erythrocytes. However, it could not prevent nicotine-induced oxidative stress in the brain of these rats, probably because it could not have been diffused to the rat brain, so as to exert its antioxidant effect. Hexane extract of H. rhamnoides L. has also prevented the depletion of the most abundant thiol, glutathione, in gastric tissue of ethanol-administered rats.

Hippophaes Eubias™ Immunomodulatory effects

The leaf extract of sea buckthorn has significant immunomodulatory activity and specifically activates the cell-mediated immune response. In chromium-induced immuno-suppressed animals, the leaf extract of sea buckthorn significantly inhibited chromium-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and maintained the cell size identical to that of control cells. In addition, the leaf extract (100 μg/ ml) alone, stimulated IL-2 and γ-IFN production, and also inhibited chromium-induced decline in IL-2 and γ-IFN production; however, it did not change IL-4 production.


• H. rhamnoeides is used as anti-cardiovascular medicine. The supplementation of H. rhamnoides L. juice (with vitamin C, alpha-tocopherol, beta-carotene and flavonoids) increased plasma HDL-cholesterol and triacylglycerol concentrations by 20% and 17%, respectively, in healthy male volunteers. In addition, supplementation resulted in a moderate decrease in the susceptibility of LDL-C to oxidation in these subjects.

• Total flavones of H. rhamnoides L. fruit have prolonged thrombotic occlusion time

in a mouse femoral artery thrombosis model by the photochemical reaction between intravenously injected rose bengal and green light irradiation. In the same study, total flavones have inhibited in vitro platelet aggregation induced by collagen, in a concentration dependent manner. In an animal study, the flavonoids of sea buckthorn were shown to reduce the production of pathogenic thromboses in mice. In addition, total flavones (100 mg/L) decreased in vitro the duration of repolarisation period in both cultured rat myocardial cells and guinea pig papillary muscles; thus they contribute in better myocardial function

Hippophae alcohol extract containing mainly flavonoids is reported to protect bone marrow from damage due to radiation; it might also help bone marrow cells recover faster. In an animal model, mice fed with sea buckthorn oil, had their hemopoietic system recovered faster after high dose chemotherapy. Antitumor effects of fruit juice and seed oil, and prevention of aminopyrine-induced tumour production in rats, by juice of H. rhamnoides L., have been reported.

• Beneficial effect of H. rhamnoides L. in dermatological disorders is known. Of the 4 months oral supplementation of pulp and seed oils in patients with atopic dermatitis, improvement in dermatitis was followed only in pulp oil supplemented group.

• Clinical effects of H. rhamnoides L. oil on liver fibrosis have also been tested recently. The oil treatment has also notably shortened the duration for normalization of aminotransferases. The results suggest that seed oil of H. rhamnoides L. may also be a useful for prevention and treatment of liver diseases.

• Protection against whole body lethal irradiation by whole berries of H. rhamnoides L., has been reported in mice. Goel et al. have demonstrated on mice that alcoholic extract have rendered 82% survival as compared to no survival in irradiated control. As proved, this extract had induced a strong compaction of chromatin, as was evident from lack of tail and appearance of intensely stained circular bodies (in Comet assay single cell gel electrophoresis). This could have made the nuclei resistant even to a radiation dose of 1000 Gy. The alcoholic extract has also inhibited radiation-induced and tertiary butyl hydro peroxide (TBHP)-induced DNA strand breaks, in a dose dependent manner. The ability of this alcoholic extract of H. rhamnoides L. to protect DNA could mainly be attributed to direct modulation of chromatin.

Ganoderma Lucidum (Ling Zhi) of Polyporacea fungi family, is a basidiomycete white rot macrofungus which has been used extensively as "the mushroom of immortality" in China, Japan, Korea and other Asian countries for 2000 years.

• Adaptogenic herbs provide exactly what is needed at the moment. Research has shown that water-soluble polysaccharides and especially b-D-glucans are the most active ingredients.

Ganoderic acids, found in Ganoderma lucidum, reduce blood pressure and cholesterol, and impede blood clotting. In anesthetized rabbits and rats given Ganoderma lucidum extract (GLE), both systolic and diastolic blood pressures were decreased; renal efferent sympathetic nerve activity was inhibited. The extract did not decrease heart rate in these animals, although there was clear hypotension in the extract dose dependent manner. The mechanism of hypotensive action of Ganoderma lucidum was due to its central inhibition of sympathetic nerve activity.


• A number of reports have demonstrated that G. lucidum polysaccharides modulate immune function both in vivo and in vitro. The immuno-modulating effects of G. lucidum polysaccharides were extensive, including promoting the function of antigen-presenting cells, mononuclear phagocyte system, humoral immunity, and cellular immunity. Thus, they may be used for asthma, dermatitis, bronchitis, rheumatism, and conjunctivitis.

• G. lucidum in vivo was able to increase interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) concentration but

reduced CD3(+) and CD8(+) spleen lymphocytes. Ex vivo, IFN-γ; and interleukin-10 levels were increased and the tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) level was reduced by peritoneal macrophages from mice fed with G. lucidum. In an in vitro study the triterpene extract from G. lucidum (GLT) markedly suppressed the secretion of inflammatory cytokine TNF-α, IL-6, inflammatory mediator nitric oxide (NO), and prostaglandin E(2) from lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated murine RAW264.7 cells.

• Administration of herbal mixture containing G. lucidum to patients suffering from Herpes genitalis and labialis appears to shorten the time required to obtain symptom relief.


• G. lucidum exerts hepatoprotective activity (in vivo) and anti-hepatitis B virus activity (in vitro) when administrated to mice, as liquid fermentation broth. Ganoderic acids inhibit cholesterol synthesis in a human hepatic cell line in vitro, and so it can be used to decrease blood cholesterol levels.

• As shown in an animal model, G. lucidum extract consumption can provide beneficial effects in treating type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) by lowering the serum glucose levels through the suppression of the hepatic phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK) gene expression. In a recent study, oral route of transgenic G. lucidum significantly reduced blood glucose in streptozocin-induced diabetic rats, as compared to rats fed with saline (P<0.0002) or non-transgenic G. lucidum (P<0.0002). Blood glucose was reduced ~64% in 80% of diabetic rats; it can be used to control blood glucose in diabetes and to improve pancreatic cell function. In addition, G. lusidum polysaccharides exert hypoglycemic effect on normal mice; one mechanism is through their insulin-releasing activity due to a facilitation of Ca2+ inflow to the pancreatic beta-cells.


• Ganoderma lucidum extract (GLE) significantly decreased sleep latency, increased sleeping time, non-REM sleep time and light sleep time in pentobarbital-treated rats. It seems that GLE exerts a benzodiazepine-like hypnotic activity, at least in part.

• It is also used for a large number of psychiatric and neurological disorders, including diseases of the muscles, anorexia, and weakness followed after a long illness. Aqueous extract of G. lucidum significantly attenuated beta amyloid-induced neurodegeneration by preserving the synaptic density protein, synaptophysin; thus, it prevented harmful effects of beta amyloid in Alzheimer’s disease. Likewise, GLE significantly prevent the production of microglia-derived proinflammatory and cytotoxic factors [nitric oxide, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin 1b (IL-1b)] in a dose-dependent manner and down-regulate the TNF-α and IL-1b expressions on mRNA level as well. Thus, G. lucidum may be a promising agent for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease through anti-inflammation. In addition, polysaccharide extract isolated from Ganoderma lucidum (Gl-PS) might be useful in treating Hypoxia/Reoxygenation-induced oxidative stress, by increasing manganese superoxide dismutase (Mn-SOD) activity.


• Ganoderma lucidum, in aggressive forms of cancer, strengthens the surface of the cancer cell by preventing its spread; it prevents clot formation, helping the local action, combination drug therapy; reduces side effects and increases effectiveness in combination with other cancer drugs and chemotherapy; it normalizes the other body functions, reducing chances of other systemic complications.

• In vitro studies reveal that GLE inhibits proliferation of human colorectal cancer cells; inhibits proliferation of human umbilical endothelial vein cells and MDA_MB231 human breast cancer cells; induces apoptosis and alterations in signal transduction kinases (Akt and Erk) on human leukemia cells and acts like a chemopreventive agent for the tumorgenesis and metastasis of highly invasive hepatoma cells. Treatment with GLE significantly inhibited the testosterone-induced growth of the ventral prostate in castrated rats. Thus, G. lucidum might be a useful ingredient in the treatment of androgen-induced diseases, such as benign prostatic hyperplasia or prostate cancer.

• In two clinical trials, ganopoly, the polysaccharides fractions extracted from G. lucidum, enhances immune responces in patients with advanced stage cancer. Likewise, oral G. lucidum modulates immune function in patients with advanced colorectal cancer.

Beta-carotene is a yellow pigment found in chlorophyll-containing plants, bacteria, and food. Among 600 known carotenoids, the substance is unique because two molecules of beta-carotene can combine to form retinol (vitamin A). Artichoke leaves (Cynara scolymusis extr. powder) are a source of dietary fibres, calcium, iron and vitamins A and C. They contain carotenoids (beta-carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin) that are associated with reduced risk of several types of cancer (lung, breast, cervical, skin and stomach). Artichokes are also high in phenolic compounds, which are reported to have antimicrobial activities. According to recent research, artichoke exerts bile stimulating action in addition to an ability to reduce nausea, abdominal pain, constipation and flatulence (related to non-specific digestive disorders). Several other studies have shown that it may also have benefits on functional dyspepsia, and irritable bowel syndrome. Further research has shown that artichokes may have a positive impact on cardiovascular disease and endothelial dysfunction by lowering blood cholesterol levels and preventing LDL-cholesterol oxidation. An in vivo study showed that artichoke leaf extract could reduce oxidative stress in rats fed on high cholesterol diet for a month.
