Magpie Distributors neededWe are looking for volunteers to deliver the Merley Magpie.

Many of our helpers have retired including Irene Simpson after 20 yearsof delivering your newsletter.

The first Magpie was published 1982. A big thank you to all our friendswho go out in all weathers putting the Magpie through your letter boxes.

The roads we need volunteers for are:

Sopwith Cresc ( approx 40 homes)

Harrier Drive

Silverdale Close

If you can help just 3 times a year please contact

Pauline Way 01202 886987 - Thank You.

Hello to all readers of the Merley Magpie. Hopefully we’ve seen the last of the wet dreary weather andSpring will bring warm, pleasant, sunny days for us all to enjoy.

Since I last wrote in the Magpie, the Community Centre has had a large extension fitted to house all thevarious equipment used by the numerous different groups and clubs that take advantage of the excellentfacilities within the centre. Users of the large hall should now find it easier to move their equipment inand out of the hall at the start and end of their session. Whilst there have been two or three minorteething problems with the extension, these hopefully will have been put right by the time this edition isprinted.

Usage of the Community centre has continued to be very high, but for some unknown reason, apartfrom the very popular monthly Saturday ballroom dances, the large hall is more often than not leftempty on Friday and Saturday nights. The cost of hiring the hall for anniversary or birthdaycelebrations, fund raising events, or any other social event is extremely competitive and included in thefee is the use of the kitchen and also access, as guests, to the members’ bar. Please phone 01202841330 (between 9.00 and 3.00) for Monday to Friday booking enquiries and 01202 880235 forSaturday and Sunday bookings.

I hope more people will take advantage and use the Community Centre’s facilities, which is sited rightbehind Merley First School and has the advantage of a large car park.Hope to see some new people soon

As always, it has been a busy and variedcouple of weeks. I have contributed toseveral debates, both in the House ofCommons chamber and in WestminsterHall. Along with other Dorset MPs, I havebeen encouraging the Government to re-think its funding for rural areas. Dorset isa beautiful place to live, but it haschallenges, and I will continue to fight fora fair deal. My view is that we should benarrowing the gap between urban andrural areas to ensure everyone gets theirfair share. Many constituents have contacted me withconcerns about the Regulation of Out ofSchool Education Settings Bill. This is abill which would require any organisationworking with children and young peoplefor more than 6 hours a week to registerand be inspected by Ofsted. I was pleasedto take part in a debate about this bill, highlighting my concerns that any newregulations should not be heavy handedand onerous. Many organisations rangingfrom churches to youth and sports clubs dogreat work with young people, often usinghard working volunteers. Whilst we need tomake sure that our children are safe andwell looked after, I will continue to press toensure that any new regulations do notinclude activities such as Sunday schoolsand summer camps. One aspect of my job is to promote MidDorset and its businesses whereverpossible. I am therefore delighted thatWimborne’s local micro-brewery 8 ArchBrewery are going to be showcasing one oftheir ales in a House of

Commons bar. The Stranger’s Bar, whichis open to both MPs, their visitors andother pass holders in Parliament, will bestocking one of their ales during March.Eight Arch Brewing Co, named after theeight arches at nearby landmark Julian’sBridge, started brewing in January 2015.For those of you who aren’t able to get tothe Stranger’s Bar, they have a taproomopen every Friday evening in Wimbornefrom 4-8pm in Stone Lane IndustrialEstate.I particularly enjoy visiting schools as partof my job. I have been visiting a number ofschools and preschools across theconstituency, seeing a fantastic range ofwork from across a wide range of subjects.Whenever possible, I also like to meet withpupils when they visit the Houses ofParliament. I feel it is important to engagechildren and young people in thedemocratic process, helping them tounderstand the freedoms we enjoy as acountry. I have recently written to everyschool in the constituency inviting them toenter the 2015/16 Speaker's School CouncilAwards. The awards are an opportunity torecognise and celebrate the schoolcouncil's achievements in bringing aboutpositive change in their school orcommunity. As always, please do get in touch if youhave any concerns or would like to meet;email me [email protected] orcontact my office on 01202 624216.

Could you be a school governor?

● Merley First School would like to invite you to join their team.School governors work as a team to make sure the school provides a qualityeducation, and strive to raise educational standards. The governing body is made upof parents, teachers and representatives from the local community.

● We would value people from the local community to join us.Merley First School has been at the heart of the Community for over 30 years. Since1st March 2015 it has been part of the Wimborne Academy Trust We are keen torecruit volunteers from the local area who can bring a wide range of experience andinterests from many walks of life. They may be retired, local business people or …..In fact anyone who can bring energy, experience and fresh ideas to help the schoolcontinue to provide the very best for its pupils. Those who would make very good governors may be put off because they think youneed to be an expert. However, interest, enthusiasm and commitment are much moreimportant. The main role of the governing body is to help raise standards of achievement. It isalso accountable for the performance of the school to parents and the widercommunity. It plans the school’s future direction and makes sure that the schoolprovides for all its pupils, including those with special needs. Being a governor is more than just taking an interest, though this is a crucial part ofthe job. The time you devote can vary widely, depending on how involved youbecome and what needs doing. The Governing Body usually meets at least twice a term and visits to school areencouraged.Governors can get a great deal from the work and time they put in.

It gives them a chance to:Make a difference to how well the school runs

See how their efforts help raise standards

Do something positive for the next generation

Serve the local community

Help realise their own potential by learning new skills

If you think you or someone you know might have some of the qualities that areneeded then contact the school office at:Merley First School on 01202 888455

As well as Chinese New Year,Pancake day and many more!With all the amazing rain and wind wehave not been deterred from gettingoutside, waterproofs and wellies on, goingon walks down by the river Stour seekingout bugs and treasures! The Children havealso had great fun in our woodland playarea making soup in the mud kitchen;

zooming around on the tire swing, leapingon logs and daily connecting with nature. As the spring approaches we are lookingforward to engaging the children withgrowing vegetables in our own vegetablepatch, and once grown, eating them aspart of their daily healthy snack. As Merley Cobham Youth Sports teams come to theend of the 2015/16 season the weather has affectedfixtures making the Merley First school pitches beingunplayable for 2 months in January and February.Despite this, Merley are well placed with the Men’s,Under 18s and Under 16 girls all challenging for titles. Both the Men and the Under 18s are both challengingat the top of their respective Dorset Premiership andDiv 2 leagues with rivals Shaftesbury with key gamesremaining against their North Dorset opponents. The Under 16 girls in their first season at 11 a sideare locked at the top of the Winchester league withSouthampton and Warsash.Merley is now one of the county’s top girls clubs withnumbers still increasing amongst their 5 teams fromU9s to U16s with a Ladies team planned for nextseason.
