Khadim Hussain S/o Sajjad Hussain R/o Kargil 004 All India Inter-University Championship Cyclist Akber Khan wins 2 gold medals ABID KHAN Srinagar, Oct 17: Kashmir’s top cyclist Muhammad Akber Khan on Monday bagged second gold medal in the ongoing All India Inter-University cycling event at Amritsar. Akber, who plays for TCI Max, is representing Guru Nanak Dev Univer- sity (GNDU) Amritsar at the event, won his second straight medal in 100-kilo- metre mass start. Known for his sprint ability, Akber remained with the bunch almost till the end and then went on to finish ahead of others for the gold. On Sunday, he became first cyclist from J&K to win medal in 60-kilometre Inter-University cycling event. “It was a tough competition and results were declared through video analyses. My coach had told me to stay in bunch till the finish. He had instruct- ed other cyclists of GNDU to support me till the finish as I am known for my sprinting ability. At finish I was head to head with other riders but owing to my better finishing ability I managed to finish first,” Akber told Greater Kashmir. Akber is the first International cyclist of the State and also the only double national gold medalist. With this double medal tally in All India Inter-University event, he boosted his medal tally to four national medals. The talented only International cyclist of Kashmir recently had joined GNDU Amritsar after being offered admission on sports quota. He was earlier student Kashmir University studying Masters in Physical Educa- tion. However while he was in Indian national camp he was declared reap- pear in the first semester examination. In June, Akber who hails from Beer- wah area of Budgam, received imported cycle worth rupees 2.75 lakhs , former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah who is local MLA of the area. It was first com- petition after getting new equipment and in that Akber excelled. “The difference between our sports administrators in Kashmir and outside State is that they recognize talent and promote it. In Kashmir, our adminis- trators instead of promoting and nur- turing talent find ways to push it back. That is what happened with me Kash- mir University,” Akber said. “In GNDU I have been provided all the facilities that a sports persons dream off. Though I was given admis- sion on sports quota but I had to go through selection process for being part of team in the All India event. They are professionals and help play- ers who have got the potential. I hope KU officials and other sports depart- ments learn something from the Sports Administrators like that of GNDU,” he added. Meanwhile J&K Sports Development Association (JKSDA) President, Bashir Ahmad Malik has hailed the achieve- ment and said, “It is irony that we fail to recognize talent and who then excel for other States. To become first cyclist of J&K to get medal in Inter-University competition is no mean achievement. He deserves praise for his hard work and dedication”. GKCC beat SCC by 33 runs in friendly match Jammu, Oct 17: Greater Kashmir Cricket Club (GKCC) registered a win over the Sterlite Cricket Club (SCC) by a margin of 33 runs in a friendly match being played at GGM Sci- ence College Hostel Ground, Jammu on Sunday. After winning the toss, GKCC, lead by Mir Imran added 208 runs in 25 overs. With his 40 run inning in 31 balls, Amit was the highest scorer. For SCC, Avinash took three wickets in his four over spell. Chasing the target, entire team of SCC, led by Harpal could make only 175 runs. Rajat of SCC was the highest scorer with his 38 run inning in 29 balls. For GKCC, Rahul took three wickets in his four over spell. Surinder Singh Bunty, Vice-President of Jammu and Kashmir Football Association was the chief guest on the occa- sion while the ground was provided by Desh Rattan Dubey, Joint Secretary, Jammu and Kashmir Crick- et Association (JKCA). Ishtayaq qualifies level 1 curator course Srinagar, Oct 17: Former Ranji trophy cricketer and chief cura- tor of J&K Cricket Association (JKCA) Ishtayaq Ahmed khan has qualified the inaugural Level 1 curator course conduct- ed by BCCI. The first ever level 1 cura- tor’s course was conducted by BCCI in National Cricket Acad- emy (NCA) Bangluru in July- August. At the end of the course examination was held in theory, practical and viva segments. In the course, 23 curators from all over India, who had obtained more than 75 % marks in the BCCI's curators certification course in 2012-13, were eligible to sit take part. Among the 18 eligible participants only 10 qualified the course with 60% marks while four got compartmental marks and four failed. Match-fixing was at its peak in 1996: Shoaib Akhtar Karachi, Oct 17: Former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar claimed on Tues- day that match-fixing was at its rampant best in 1996 but himself refrained from getting involved in the mal- practice. "The atmosphere of the Pakistan dressing room was very strange...Trust me it was the worst possible dressing room," Akhtar was quoted as saying by Geo News. The "Rawalpindi Express" added he always stayed away from fixing circles and cautioned other people about it, advising team-mates to play with integrity and sincerity. Akhtar also claimed to have warned fixing convict Muhammad Amir back in 2010 to avoid meeting people who could lure players to match fixing. Amir served a five- year suspension after admitting to fixing in 2010. He returned to action last year and is now a regular in the Pakistan team. Akhtar said he intervened to put an end to a recent public verbal dis- pute between Javed Miandad and Shahid Afridi , urging the two war- ring former Pakistan skip- pers to resolve the matter through dialogue. "To resolve the matter through talks was the most possible solution. I spoke to Afridi and Javed bhai to settle the matter outside court. If it would have go to the court, then a lot of names would have cropped up," Akhtar told Geo TV. "My main concern was that. I told Afridi not to send a legal notice and advised Javed bhai to keep control of his anger and not say anything controversial in public. He exceeded limits by uttering unnecessary things." The 41-year-old said Miandad and Afridi's spat could have opened a Pan- dora's box, tarnishing Paki- stan cricket's image world- wide. IANS Ashwin's praise great motivation: Yasir Shah Dubai, Oct 17: Rich praise from India's star spinner Ravichandran Ashwin Pakistan has given an extra dose of motivation to Pakistan leg-spinner Yasir Shah, who just became the second joint-fastest to 100 Test wickets. Shah achieved the feat with a five-wicket haul against the West Indies during the ongoing day- night Test. Shah said Ash- win's words of encourage- ment were inspiring. "Yes, he had said good luck so I am thankful. It's naturally motivating when a great bowler who is second fastest to 200 wickets a good luck message and it's really a great motivation for me," Shah said referring to Ashwin's tweet. Ashwin, who became the second fastest to 200 Test wickets in the recent- ly concluded home series against New Zea- land, had tweeted to Shah last week. "Good luck, may the force be with him. He is such a delight to watch," the in- form Indian spinner had posted. The Pakistan spinner also hoped that he plays against India in the near future. The arch-rivals have not played a Test series since 2007 due to political tensions between the two countries in the wake of terror attacks in India. "Every Pakistani and Indian player has this wish to play against each other. I have not played a Test against India so it's my wish," he added. PTI CMYK

All India Inter-University Championship

Cyclist Akber Khan wins 2 gold medals

abid khan

Srinagar, Oct 17: Kashmir’s top cyclist Muhammad Akber Khan on Monday bagged second gold medal in the ongoing All India Inter-University cycling event at Amritsar.

Akber, who plays for TCI Max, is representing Guru Nanak Dev Univer-sity (GNDU) Amritsar at the event, won his second straight medal in 100-kilo-metre mass start.

Known for his sprint ability, Akber remained with the bunch almost till the end and then went on to finish ahead of others for the gold.

On Sunday, he became first cyclist from J&K to win medal in 60-kilometre

Inter-University cycling event.“It was a tough competition and

results were declared through video analyses. My coach had told me to stay in bunch till the finish. He had instruct-ed other cyclists of GNDU to support me till the finish as I am known for my sprinting ability.

He was earlier student Kashmir University studying Masters in Physical Educa-tion. However while he was in Indian national camp he was declared reap-pear in the first semester examination.

In June, Akber who hails from Beer-wah area of Budgam, received imported cycle worth rupees 2.75 lakhs , former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah who is local MLA of the area. It was first com-

petition after getting new equipment and in that Akber excelled.

“The difference between our sports administrators in Kashmir and outside State is that they recognize talent and promote it. In Kashmir, our adminis-trators instead of promoting and nur-turing talent find ways to push it back. That is what happened with me Kash-mir University,” Akber said.

“In GNDU I have been provided all the facilities that a sports persons dream off. Though I was given admis-sion on sports quota but I had to go through selection process for being part of team in the All India event. They are professionals and help play-ers who have got the potential. I hope KU officials and other sports depart-ments learn something from the Sports Administrators like that of GNDU,” he added.

Meanwhile J&K Sports Development Association (JKSDA) President, Bashir Ahmad Malik has hailed the achieve-ment and said, “It is irony that we fail to recognize talent and who then excel for other States. To become first cyclist of J&K to get medal in Inter-University competition is no mean achievement. He deserves praise for his hard work and dedication”.

Match-fixing was at its peak in 1996: Shoaib Akhtar

Karachi, Oct 17: Former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar claimed on Tues-day that match-fixing was at its rampant best in 1996 but himself refrained from getting involved in the mal-practice.

"The atmosphere of the Pakistan dressing room was very strange...Trust me it was the worst possible dressing room," Akhtar was quoted as saying by Geo News.

T h e " R a w a l p i n d i Express" added he always stayed away from fixing circles and cautioned other people about it, advising team-mates to play with integrity and sincerity.

Akhtar also claimed to have warned fixing convict Muhammad Amir back in 2010 to avoid meeting people who could lure players to match fixing.

Amir served a five-year suspension after admitting to fixing in 2010. He returned to action last year and is now a regular in the Pakistan team.

Akhtar said he intervened to put an end to a recent public verbal dis-pute between Javed Miandad and Shahid

Afridi , urging the two war-ring former Pakistan skip-pers to resolve the matter through dialogue.

He exceeded limits by uttering unnecessary things."

The 41-year-old said Miandad and Afridi's spat could have opened a Pan-dora's box, tarnishing Paki-stan cricket's image world-wide. IANS

Ashwin's praise great motivation: Yasir Shah

Dubai, Oct 17: Rich praise from India's star spinner Ravichandran Ashwin Pakistan has given an extra dose of motivation to Pakistan leg-spinner Yasir Shah, who just became the second joint-fastest to 100 Test wickets.

Shah achieved the feat with a five-wicket haul against the West Indies during the ongoing day-night Test. Shah said Ash-win's words of encourage-ment were inspiring.

"Yes, he had said good luck so I am thankful. It's naturally motivating when a great bowler who is second fastest to 200 wickets a good luck message and it's really

a great motivation for me," Shah said referring to Ashwin's tweet.

Ashwin, who became the second fastest to 200 Test wickets in the recent-ly concluded home

series against New Zea-land, had tweeted to Shah last week.

"Good luck, may the force be with him. He is such a delight to watch," the in-form Indian spinner had posted.

PTI
