MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear St. Agnes School Parents, January means Auction projects prepared by the teachers and students, Auction baskets prepared by Room parents and Catholic Schools Week that is the project of teachers, staff, students and parents! Thank you to all who are involved in the preparation of these materials and activities! It takes many hands and that is one of the blessings of being at St. Agnes – the many hands that work together for our school and Parish. Thank you for your many gifts shared during these busy days. The family Religion projects that are coming in are wonderful! Everyone is admiring the creativity and variety of projects! We have seventy-three projects as of yesterday. Children whose families participate will receive an extra credit grade in Religion. There is still time to bring a project. We do need them by tomorrow so that they can be prepared for Sunday’s Open House. “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service!” is the theme for this year’s national celebration of Catholic Schools Week. This theme was used last year and will be carried through next year to allow us time to really live with the theme and proclaim the gifts of Catholic education. Faith, knowledge and service are integral components of a Catholic education and the measures by which any Catholic school can be judged. The banner that hangs in our school hall features a swirl of colors surrounding a cross, which is at the center of Catholic education. The vibrant colors, movement and shadows in the logo combine to portray the interconnectivity and community life that characterizes Catholic schools. We are a community at St. Agnes School but we are also a part of larger communities of home, church, city and nation. Tomorrow, we will kick off the celebration of Catholic Schools week with TGIF…Third Graders in Faith day. Third graders from all of our Catholic Schools will be gathering at Blessed Sacrament School for a day of activities. Third grade teachers from the various schools prepare an activity that will be shared with the rotating groups throughout the day. The groups are a mixture of students from each school so that students get to know one another. SHG student ambassadors accompany the groups during the day. This weekend you are invited to attend the 9:30 a.m. Parish Mass on Sunday as our students, parents and teachers witness to our Parish community the faith that is a part of our Catholic education. Thank you to those families who will be giving their time and service as readers, greeters, banner carriers, singers and gift bearers. The Alumni of the Year award will be presented to Sr. Maxine Riker, O.P., one of our Dominican Sisters who was a 1956 graduate. An Open House will be held in the school following the 9:30 a.m. Mass and refreshments served in the cafeteria by the Parents’ Club. Religion projects, Auction projects and Auction baskets will be displayed throughout the school. At each of the Masses this weekend, a special collection will be taken up for our teachers to thank them for their service to our Parish school. Envelopes were placed in last week’s bulletin. You will find an envelope with today’s newsletter if you receive a paper copy. Parents can pick up envelopes in the school office, if needed. Monday, January 26th, is a Service Day….Random Acts of Kindness will be done throughout the day. The Student Council will be going out to express appreciation and share a “kind wish” that have been prepared by our children in areas where we have received permission. You never know where we might show up in the community! Grades 1 & 2 are also going to surprise a few people. Other classes throughout the day will be looking for ways they can reach out to others! In the afternoon, the 8th graders will be leading a “Faith Trivia” for the students in each classroom. Tuesday, January 27th, is Student Appreciation Day. This is “NUT” day for students – no uniform today! Students may choose their choice of dress. Those who will be staying

for the Read-In in the evening will want to wear comfortable clothing. We will celebrate our students with a movie and treat, pizza lunch, and a special gift from the Parents’ Club. Primary grades (K-2) will have a Read-In the afternoon on Tuesday. Grades 3-8 who have signed up will remain for our traditional Prime Time Read-In. The event, this year, begins with students moving to the gym or library at 3:15 p.m. Check-in will follow. Students will receive a new book to use during this evening and be read to by community leaders. They may bring their e-readers or iPads with books already on them to use for this evening. When picking up children at the end of the program, parents are asked to wait in the school hall until the evening has concluded. The evening ends at 7:30 p.m. Students should bring to school with them whatever they need for the Read-In. The items will be kept in their individual classrooms for the day. Wednesday, January 28th, is Parents’ and Community Day. You are welcome to visit classes while they are in session from 10:00 a.m. until 1:15 p.m. The visit to each classroom ends when students return from lunch. Parents must have an order for lunch in ahead of time. We cannot accept walk-ins on Monday due to prior ordering of food. You are encouraged to invite friends, neighbors and co-workers who might be interested in Catholic education at St. Agnes to come with you on Sunday and/or Wednesday. You are the best promoters of our school! Thursday is Vocations and Career Day. At our 8:15 a.m. Liturgy, we will be honoring Fr. Bob and his vocation. If your family would like to send a card that will be presented during this Mass, please send it to the school office with Fr. Bob’s name on it. Students are making cards at school. Throughout the morning, students will take part in praying for vocations before the Blessed Sacrament. At 11:00 a.m. we will gather in the Church for Benediction. You are welcome to join us. Religious and priests will be invited to attend our Religion Fair and share refreshments on this day. They are, also, invited to visit some of our classrooms and talk about their vocations. Some of our parents and other speakers will be visiting classes to speak about their careers in the afternoon. Letters of gratitude will be written to men and women in the military. If you have an address for someone you would like to receive a card, please send it to the school office. Friday is Teacher and Staff Appreciation Day. I ask that you please take the time to affirm our teachers and staff for their commitment to Catholic education at St. Agnes in your own personal way. We are blessed with a very dedicated and committed staff here at St. Agnes. The Student Council will be helping me with this special day to honor teachers and staff. Horace Mann and the Student Council will be helping with a breakfast on this day. There will be a special assembly at 9:30 a.m. and dismissal at 11:30 a.m. on Friday. Late day is open on this day. Catholic Schools Week is about all of us! Thank you to parents, teachers, students, parishioners, volunteers, grandparents, alumni, businesses and friends who are the St. Agnes community. We are so grateful for the many hands and hearts that come together for our St. Agnes School. You are appreciated! Our Auction grows closer and closer. If you are willing to donate a basket or any other new item, these must be received by Sunday, February 8th. The booklet will go to print soon after that. Thank you to all who have already shown your support of our Parish Auction which benefits our Parish and school. If you have not been contacted about helping with the Auction, please let us know as there are many hands needed for this event. Thank you to those families who have returned your evaluation. Please be aware that paper copies were in the first January Newsletter and that you received an e-mail allowing you to also submit your comments through Survey Monkey. This survey will be available until the end of January.

St. Agnes Catholic School thanks Jim Watts Electric, Inc.

(Jim & Robin Watts) &

RD Lawrence Construction Co. (John Goetz)

for their generous support through their participation in our M.A.G.I.C. MATCH Business Education Partnership Program.

Parents please support our sponsors who give to our school.

Volunteers are needed by the Parents’ Club for the Family Fitness night in February and the March Madness evening in March. If you are interested in giving your time and are in need of service hours, please contact Michelle Kornack or Theresa Benedict. Please mark your calendars for the Student Council dates for the rest of this school year. They are: February 4 & 18, March 4 & 25, April 1 & 15, May 6 & 13. The dates vary due to early dismissals and other meetings, but they are always on Wednesdays. I have contacted SHG regarding the scheduling of a testing review date that conflicts with one of our Volleyball games. We had, previously, indicated that date as a conflict for us. In checking with SHG, this is the response which I hope will be helpful to our families. “The families can come either evening, February 3rd or February 11th, 6:00 p.m. It lasts about an hour but families can leave earlier if they need to. One parent is sufficient. Students are invited. If the parent can’t come, the student could come with a friend’s family. If no one can come from the family, have them call SHG and ask for Theresa Duffin or a Guidance counselor to schedule a one to one.” Faith Reflection: “The person who doesn’t fit in with our notions of who is worthy of our love - the bag lady at the corner, the strange old man who rides through town on a three wheel bike all strung up with flags – is just the person who, by not fitting into our patterns, insists that we expand not only our views but also our capacity to love. Today, see if you can stretch your heart and expand your love so that it touches not only those to whom you can give it easily, but also to those who need it so much.”

-Daphne Rose Kingma Celebrating Catholic education with you, Sr. Joan GRADE K Tuesday will be our 100 day of school. Come to the Open House on Sunday after the 9:30 Mass and check out our cool 100 collections! The religion projects will be on display also. Then look at all the auction projects each class has made. These will be sold at the Auction in March. We have much to be proud of at our school! We are 100 days smarter! Parent Readers: KA-Mrs. Albanese and KB- Mr. Johnson.

MUSIC An informational letter was given to students who are participating at the 9:30 A.M. Mass on Sunday, January 25. Please call Mrs. Cour at 415-4746 if you did not receive it. Thank you. LIBRARY NEWS There are some great reading accomplishments to mention this week! Preston Obert in 2A has reached his Reading Counts points goal of 100. His classmate, Maria Bartletti, has exceeded her goal of reading 35 chapter books. In 5B, Alec Short has finished reading Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson series, and Alililla Martinez recently completed Lauren Tarshis' I Survived series. In 5A, Jayden Driscoll is fulfilling his goal of reading two chapter books each month. These students have added a circle to our very long library bookworm. Take a look during Catholic Schools' Week! JUMP ROPE FOR HEART/HOOPS FOR HEART Jump Rope for Heart will be on Tuesday, February 10, 2015 and Hoops for Heart will be on Wednesday, February 11, 2015 with times to be announced. Envelopes are due on Monday, February 2, 2015 with online fundraising open until Monday, February 9, 2015. Thank you to everyone for your support. This year’s goal is $9,000.00. Please contact Mr. Morgan with any questions at 546-7094. Have a Heart Healthy New Year! MISSIONS Hebrews 10:24 states: We must consider how to rouse one another to love and do good works. Doing good works and service for others was evident in our recent weekly mission collection January 12th through the 16th. January’s thoughtful givers of service and blessings donated a total of $134.45 for the Missionary Childhood Association. “Pats on the back” to 3a: $27.34 and 6b $21.56. Please note that February, March, and April will not have a weekly collection due to the Lenten Boxes being the central focus. Let us all be mindful during those 3 months of focusing on our upcoming celebration of Easter: God’s greatest gift to us all. Our final weekly collection for the school year will be May 11th-15th. PARENTS’ CLUB FAMILY FITNESS NIGHT - PARENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED The Parents' Club is holding Family Fitness Night at the school on February 12th at 6:30 pm.
