TECHNOLOGY ADVANCESThis past summer, St. Anne took another leap forward in the field of technology. The first order of business was to make our campus completely wireless for internet access. Working with our technology plan, the school installed several hubs of wireless access on campus as well as in St. Basil Hall. Within this system, the school created individual networks for faculty, students and guests, which allows us to not only have students utilizing technology, but our guests now have this same capability. Already we have used this guest system for orientation, professional development for large groups and our PTO meetings and events. “The evolution of our school’s technology over the last 10 years has been phenomenal,” says Amy Schmidt, our school’s educational technologist. “The addition of the wireless access has created a new dimension of access that opens up incredible possibilities for our teachers and students.” In addition to the wireless access, the school purchased a fourth iPad cart, to be used in the lower school as

well as a classroom set of Kindle Fires for our junior high students. Vickie Bell, our junior high reading teacher, adds, “Our exciting new addition of Kindles allows students to read literature electronically. When the students come across a new word, they may tap on it and instantaneously receive the definition. It is quickly becoming habit for the students to inquire further while reading.” The internet capabilities of the Kindle Fire also allow the students and teachers to gain more information about questions they may have while reading a text. We are watching the success of these Kindles to help us decide what other areas would benefit from this purchase.

This year, St. Anne Catholic School helped raise funds and awareness for Catholic education through Steps for Students. This annual Archdiocesan event raises awareness of the importance of a Catholic education and provides much needed funds for Catholic schools. Steps for Students is an opportunity for all members of the Faith community to work together to support education of mind, heart, and spirit in the many Catholic Schools of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston.

With almost 200 runners representing St. Anne, we were quite a sight. The St. Anne team was made up of students, teachers, grandparents and parishioners of all ages wearing the official Shamrock Steps for Students shirts. “This year’s

goal was to have our own shirt, so everyone would know we were representing St. Anne. That goal came true with a winning design from third grader, Anna Petry and a generous t-shirt donation from EPI”, said Dawn Martinez, Assistant Principal. “We have already set our goal for next year’s race to continue the t-shirt tradition and double the size of our Shamrock team”.

School parents and students also volunteered to make the race a great family event. The PTO ran the games in the post-race event area and ensured that children had a great time after the race. “We are so pleased to be a part of this annual race and to help support Catholic education for all students.” said Principal, Kathleen Barnosky. Next year, Steps for Students celebrates its 10th race on February 21, 2015.

STEPS FOR STUDENTS

A special heartfelt THANK YOU to the friends and families who have contributed almost $30,000 in memory of St. Anne Catholic School alumni and supporters. Our prayers will go out to each of you for helping support current students through the memory of those we have lost.

GUARDIAN ANGELS Our PK students enjoy some new pieces of playground equipment. This equipment was purchased through a bequest of the Elizabeth Sullivan estate. Coach Sullivan was a beloved teacher and benefactor of St. Anne Catholic School. She is one of the many guardian angels who assist the school with special projects that enhance learning.
