ST. JOHN’S HERALD Newsletter | February 2018
Pastor’s Paragraphs
“This most generous God who gives seed to the farmer that becomes bread for your meals is more than extravagant with you. He gives you something you can then give away, which grows into full-formed lives, robust in God, wealthy in every way, so that you can be generous in every way, producing with us great praise to God.” 2 Corinthians 9: 9-11
Have you ever thought about the meaning of generous? Merriam Webster defines generous as providing more than the amount that is needed or normal, abundant or ample, showing kindness and concern for others. When I think about Biblical images of generosity, I think of the widow and her two mites. She gave all she had. She didn’t wonder from where her next meal would come. She trusted and she gave generously.
The utmost example of generosity, of course, is our Lord and Savior. Jesus gave up his life for us, so that we might have life eternal. He didn’t do it because he would gain anything. He didn’t do it because he owed someone or something. He generously gave up his life out of love for us.
Who are your examples in your life for living life generously? What makes you want to be generous? What are things that stand in your way of living your life generously? What have we been taught about generosity? How would our lives be different if we lived out of God’s generous abundance?
These are all questions that throughout this year, St. John’s will be thinking about. 2018, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, will be a focus on Generosity. We will start, of course, with God’s generosity to us, remembering together of God’s

generosity to us individually and also to us as a part of God’s people at St. John’s Lutheran Church. We will then look at ways that we can model God’s generosity for others.
God has been incredibly generous to us as a faith community these many years. God continues to provide resources so that we may do God’s work, with our hands. How do we use that generosity to benefit others? How do we give thanks for that continuing generosity? How do we respond with our own generosity?
I look forward to our journey this year as we discover new ways that we have been blessed by God’s generosity and new ways that we can share God’s generosity with others.
God’s peace and my prayers,
Pastor Lesley

Introducing Doughnut Time Sponsorship
Interesting Doughnut Facts
1) Boston has the most doughnut shops per population…1 shop for
every 2480 people.
2) 10 Billion doughnuts are made every year in the U.S.
3) By 2011, 10 people had the last name of Doughnut or Donut
4) You can now sponsor St. John’s Doughnut Time for $50.
Each week, doughnuts, coffee and juice are provided during the fellowship time. It costs about $50 per week to make this fellowship treat happen. This includes the cost of the doughnuts, coffee, juice, paper plates, etc.
We now will have the opportunity to sponsor the doughnut time, just like we sponsor altar flowers. Your name will be in the bulletin and at the doughnut table. You can take home the leftover doughnuts (if there are any). Just write the check for $50 to St. John’s, with Doughnut Time in the subject line and let Carol, our church secretary, know what you want your dedication line to say.
Think about this sponsorship for someone’s birthday, to honor someone at church or to just say thank you to someone for their hard work. This sponsorship can be shared by families, ministry teams or whatever other creative way you might have.
Sponsoring the Doughnut Time is a way to honor people as well as helping provide a tasty treat for folks. Thank you for your support of this fellowship ministry.
