St. Joseph News

Pastor’s Column

Dear Parishioners,

Lent begins this Wednesday with Ash Wednesday. It’s good for us to be reminded of exactly what God asks of us Catholics, fasting-wise, during this holy season: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. For mem-bers of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards.

Now, be mindful that this is a far cry from what Catholics had to observe decades back: every sin-gle day of Lent (except Sundays and feasts) were days of fast and abstinence--and fasting meant no more than “one big meal and two smaller meals.”

I think it is good for us to go beyond these minimal standards. After all, Christ fasted to the point of pain for us, and he had no sin of his own to atone for.

Remember that the point of penance is never self-punishment but instead purification, growth in charity, and having the eyes of our mind enhanced to apprehend realities and situations we are not keen enough to see. Penance is a lovely thing.

Our Lenten observance is to be marked by three things: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. That is, we must pray more, fast more, and give alms more. Again, the point of all this is not to punish ourselves but to GROW CLOSER TO OUR LORD.

Sometimes people try and say we don’t need to fast. Sorry Charlie, not this priest. If your Lent doesn’t include fasting from food in some way, I daresay you need to do better (unless there are health con-cerns). Let us pray about our Lenten observances!

Peace, Fr. Mike

Biography of the Saint of the Week

St. Francis of Assisi

Born: at Assisi in Italy 1181 Died: Oct. 3, 1226 Feast day: Oct. 4 Patron of: ecologists, animal lovers, nativity scenes, pilgrims

St. Francis was born to a wealthy merchant in Assisi, and in his youth was renowned for his singing, drinking and partying. But when Assisi went to war with the neighboring city of Perugia, Francis joined the battle, was captured and held for ransom. While waiting in prison for nearly a year for his father’s payment, he began to have visions from God. A long illness after his release also gave him time to pray and reflect on his life. After his recov-ery, he intended once more to join forces fighting in southern Italy, but on the road there he heard a heavenly voice telling him “to turn back and serve the master rather than the man”. This he did, and completely turned his life around. He rejected his father’s wealth and assumed a life of prayer and simplistic poverty, as well as service to those most in need.

One day while praying in the church of San Dami-ano, Francis heard a voice from the crucifix tell him three times to “Go and repair my house, which you see is falling down”. Francis was being called not to rebuild San Damiano physically, but to renew “the heart of the universal Church”.

Years later, after founding the Religious Order known as the Friars Minor, Francis had yet another vision and received the stigmata of Christ. The later years of his life were years of suffering, and yet happiness in God.

He died on the evening of Oct. 3, 1226. He was canonized two years later by Pope Gregory IX, his former friend and protector.

Reflection Questions from Rediscover the Saints

1. Are you satisfied with the story you are writing with your life?

2. How is God inviting you to a new and better life? 3. Are you living the one short life you have been

given with passion and purpose?

Bring Back Your Palms from Last Year

Soon Fr. Mike and the 5th grade class will burn palms for Ash Wed. Please put them in the narthex.

Ash Wednesday

Prayer, fasting, and almsgiving: these disciplines, prescribed by Jesus himself in the Sermon on the Mount, along with strict instructions not to flaunt them in public to win recognition and praise (Matthew 6:1-18), have been embraced by all the saints at the be-ginning of every Lent for almost two thousand years. But mention Lent, and many react with a grimace or slight shudder—even now, years after official obliga-tions have been reduced to a minimum! No wonder the Eastern Rite’s “Lenten Announcement” sounds surprising: “Let us receive with joy, O faithful people, the divinely inspired announcement of Lent! The Lenten Spring shines forth! Begin the fast with joy! Let us fast from passions as well as food, taking pleasure in the good works of the Spirit, and accom-plishing them in love!” Saint John Chrysostom, whose feast is September 13th, elaborates: “Do you fast? Give proof by your works. If you see a poor person, take pity. An enemy, be reconciled. A friend gaining honor, don’t be jealous.” A positive approach! May the saints help us keep such a Lent!

Sr. Joan’s Corner

Dear Parishioners,

If any of us had to say one word that described us, I doubt any of us would say, “Holy”. We know our-selves too well to say we are holy. And yet, St. Paul tells us in the Second reading this weekend that we are temples of God and we are holy. Jesus in the Gospel makes it clear in what holiness consists. Jesus tells us to go the extra mile and to “love our enemies”. So, holiness is not about halos or asceticism or sinlessness; it is about love. Even declared saints were human men and women who were not without sin. They were lovers of God and of other people. This Wednesday we will be marked with ashes to remind us that we are human (humus=earth) beings and we are encouraged to repent. This does not mean wallowing in guilt. It means acknowledging our sins and resolving to follow Jesus more closely. We are loved by God and we are to be lovers of God, other human beings, and Creation. In other words, we are called to be holy. This week as we pray, let us ask God to help us to love God more deeply through our love of other human beings and Creation. Help us go the extra mile for those around us.

Sr. Joan

Deacon Tom’s Homily—Feb. 16

LORD, who am I? Who am I to question your commandments, to ques-tion your laws and the way You have paved for me? Who am I to question your will and desires for me? Who am I to question and discount your love for me? Who am I to question You—the great I Am. Who am I to bend and break your laws and to think I know what is better for me than You? Who am I to bend and distort your love to conform to my twisted desires, misguided wants and selfish impulses? You do not force me to subscribe to what is best for me. You do not coerce me to submit to a way of living that will give me life and lead me to everlasting life where I will be eternal like You. You do not force me into anything. You merely offer me to choose—to choose what is best for me. Not only do You offer me the choice, You give me the gift to freely choose—to freely choose You. If I fail or falter with my choice, You do not abandon me to suffer the consequences of my mistakes alone. You have waiting for me your promise to save me—to save me from my selfish choices, from myself. You promise mercy. And, your mercy waits for me, to catch sight of me and rush to rescue me. You catch sight of me as I appear on the distant horizon, stumbling on my way to You. There You stand with the robe of salvation ready to wrap around me—a robe woven from strands of your law, your mercy and your love. As I fall into your embrace weary from the weight of my selfishness, You gently speak to my heart, “Come see what eye has not seen, what ear has not heard, what heart has not felt. Welcome to what I have prepared for you since the dawn of Time.” I raise my eyes to meet your loving gaze and ask, “LORD, who am I? Who am I to deserve You?” You hold me close and say, “You are mine. I love you, Stinky Face.”

Wise Words from St. Francis de Sales

Never be in a hurry. Do everything quietly and

in a calm spirit. Do not lose your inner peace for

anything whatsoever, even if your whole world is upset.

14 Holy Helpers

The Fourteen Holy Helpers are a group of saints venerated together in Roman Catholicism because their intercession is believed to be particularly effective, especially against various diseases. This group of Nothelfer ("helpers in need") originated in the 14th century at first in the Rhineland, largely as a result of the epidemic (probably of bubonic plague) that became known as the Black Death. Seek the help of these saints...it’s powerful!
