Monday Words Their Way Activity – Dictionary Meanings or Sentence Writing

WALT: Look at word meaning or put the word into a sentence

WILF: Meanings of words and words used in complex sentences

Word Sentence or Dictionary Meaning

Monday Writing – Fact or Opinion

WALT – Understand that information reports contain facts.

WILF – Identify whether sentences are facts or opinions

TIB – Information reports give us factual information about a topic.

Read the information report on Turtles and then complete the fact and opinion activity on the next page.

Turtles Turtles are reptiles. They are cold-blooded, so they need sunlight to keep them warm and active.

Turtles have a hard shell on their back. This protects them from their enemies. Some turtles can even hide their heads inside their shells if they are being attacked!

Turtles lay their eggs on land. Some turtles lay their eggs in the sand, then leave the eggs to hatch on their own. When they hatch, the baby turtles scramble down into the water. They have to be quick so that they don’t get eaten by larger animals.

Most turtles eat plants that grow in the water. Some turtles also like to eat meat. These turtles eat small insects, snails and worms.

Many species of turtles are endangered, which means they are at risk of becoming extinct. Humans must work to protect these beautiful creatures for future generations.

Monday Writing – Information Report

Natural Disasters This week, you are going to write an information text about a natural disaster/phenomenon.

Remember that information texts provide factual information about a topic. Natural disasters could include: volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, tornados, cyclones, flooding, bush fires, earthquake.

Today, you will only need to think about what you would like to write about this week. You will begin planning tomorrow.

Plan Which natural disaster are you going to describe/write about? Plan your writing before you begin How does this natural disaster happen? Decide which facts you will use Why does it happen? Where does it happen? How does it effect humans?

Remember to include An introduction – a general statement about the natural disaster. A description – a series of paragraphs describing the natural disaster. A conclusion – a summary statement about the natural disaster.

Remember to use Remember to check Paragraphs Spelling and punctuation Formal and factual language Sentence structure

Monday Speaking and Listening – Amazon Fires WALT: We are learning that living things depend on each other and the environment to survive. WILF: I can investigate the importance of the Amazon rainforest and what makes it unique. TIB: As well as the vivid beauty that comes with the great diversity in plants and animals, rain forests play a practical role in keeping our planet healthy

https://www.abc.net.au/btn/classroom/amazon-fires/11460664 Transcript: Have you ever heard of a pink river dolphin? How about a black spider monkey? Or a peanut head bug? Well, I bet you have heard of a jaguar, a piranha and an anaconda, am I right? They're just a few of the millions of incredible and sometimes creepy creatures that call the Amazon home. As you probably already know, the Amazon is a big, old rainforest. And I mean big. It's the world's largest rainforest and river system stretching across 5.5 million square kilometres of South America, mainly Brazil. It's the most biologically diverse place on Earth. It's also home to about a million indigenous people. But, right now, the Amazon is facing a huge crisis. US REPORTER: The Amazon is burning. LEIGH SALES, ABC NEWSREADER: Fires could have planetary wide implications. CNN NEWSREADER: Those fires swallowing the Amazon rainforest. Tens of thousands of fires have been raging here for weeks now. Reports show that about three soccer fields worth of forest is burning every minute and the smoke can be seen all the way from space. At one point, the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo was blanketed by so much of it, its skies went dark like night time. This NASA satellite picture shows a of cloud of carbon monoxide; a harmful gas that's being produced by the fires. Experts say most of these fires have been deliberately lit by farmers trying to clear land for their animals and crops. Land clearing with fires or machinery has been going on in the Amazon for years and some say that's a big problem. Rainforests play an important and complex role in the health of our atmosphere. They suck up carbon dioxide and turn it into oxygen through a process called photosynthesis and while the plants and soil also take in oxygen and produce CO2 in a process called respiration, overall, the Amazon acts as a carbon sponge helping to clean the air. It also has a big effect on rainfall in the region. Over the past decade or so deforestation in the Amazon has gone down dramatically thanks to changes to Brazilian laws and national and international programs and agreements to try to protect the Amazon. But this year Brazil got a new President, Jair Bolsonaro. He says he wants more development in the Amazon and to weaken environmental laws and that's made many people angry. Some conservationists and celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio and Ariana Grande have called for action to put out the fires and protect the Amazon. Many world leaders have also spoken out about it. BORIS JOHNSON, UK PRIME MINISTER: We've seen in the Amazon rainforest a tragic increase in fires which are made more likely by deforestation. Last week, some of those leaders offered Brazil nearly 30 million dollars to help tackle the fires and suggested replanting some of the trees. But President Bolsonaro has so far turned down the money saying his country will handle it. The Brazilian government says it's put billions of dollars towards fighting the fires and it's sent in tens of thousands of soldiers to help out. It's a huge task and one the world will be watching closely, in the hope that they'll be able to protect this amazing natural wonder and the creatures that rely on it.

Monday Art - Magic colour wheels WALT: Experiment with different Art materials to consider colour blending and mixing outcomes

WILF: Your ability to follow instructions and answer outcomes of Art experiments

TIB: Art and colours are a part of our everyday world, it is important to understand and appreciate how they work

Instructions:

1.Trace two circles the same size onto cardboard (about 8-10cms wide). You can use a drinking glass to trace around to get a perfect circle. Decorate your circles, be sure to use large amounts of colour.

2.Cut out the coloured circles and glue them back to back.

3. Poke two holes into the centre of the cardboard circle and thread through string and tie at the end.

If you do not have string you can poke one hole in the centre and use a toothpick or pencil to spin your colour wheel.

5. If you used string – take a piece of string in each hand with the circle in the middle, spin in circles to get the rope twisted. Then pull it outwards -it should now spin fast.

If you used a pencil or a toothpick, spin your colour wheel by twisting it and releasing it like a spinning top. If you used a pencil or a toothpick, spin your colour wheel by twisting it and releasing it like a spinning top.

WALT (We Are Learning To) – understand the impact of ‘deforestation’on the Borneo area.

WILF (What I’m Looking For) – create a summary of the deforestation text and identify its impacts.

• Look at the following image of the forest to view the deforestation of Borneo over time.

• Read the following section on deforestation based on the WWF article on Threats to Borneo forests.

Deforestation Illegal logging Illegal logging has become a way of life for some communities, with timber being taken from wherever it can be accessed, sold to collectors and processed in huge sawmills.

Scale of the problem Satellite studies show that 56% of protected tropical rainforests in Kalimantan were cut down between 1985 and 2001 to supply global timber demand – that’s more than 29,000 km² (almost the size of Belgium). Protection laws are in effect throughout Borneo, but are often not followed, frequently without any consequences.

Oil palm development One of the biggest causes of deforestation is the growth of oil palm plantations in response to global demand for palm oil, the most important tropical vegetable oil in the global oils and fats industry. Within Indonesia, oil palm production expanded from 600,000 hectares in 1985 to over 6 million hectares by 2007.

Tropical deforestation Without the maintenance of very large blocks of connected forest, there is a risk that hundreds of species could become extinct. Large mammals such as orangutans and elephants are particularly affected because of the large areas they need to survive. For example, the Borneo elephant has increasingly come into conflict with the growth of human agriculture activities in its natural habitat. Road construction through protected areas leads to further separation of habitat ranges and provides easy access for poachers to some of the more remote areas of remaining forest.

Oil palm threats in Borneo As palm oil is the cheapest vegetable oil, the demand for it as a source of food and energy is expected to rise rapidly. The demand for food alone is expected to double in the next decade, and the Indonesian government has set a target to increase oil palm production from 20 million tonnes in 2009 to 40 million tonnes in 2020.

If the Heart of Borneo were cleared for oil palm plantations, this would seriously affect the region’s water catchment role and would impact the region’s unique biodiversity. The unsuitability of the land may also result in large-scale soil erosion, flooding and increase the risk of fire.

Climate change Deforestation and forest degradation make up 20 per cent of global man-made CO2 emissions. If the island of Borneo continues at its current rate of deforestation, it will be severely affected by climate change through the increased risk of floods and forest fires, human health impacts, changes in agricultural crops and damage to infrastructure. It is also believed that a future rise in sea level rise would cause widespread damage to population centres, causing economic damage to local governments, communities and businesses. Write a summary of the article. Include in your summary some of the reasons why the Borneo jungle is being cut down and what are some of the consequences of the deforestation. ___________________________________________________________

Friday: Tears In The Jungle Investigating habitats and threats

WALT (We Are Learning To) – investigate and assess the health of habitats in our local area

WILF (What I’m Looking For) – identifying the health of habitats in our local area?

Today you are going to go outside and undertake a habitat assessment of your back yard by completing a survey.

Backyard mini-creature survey This survey records the mini-creatures living in your yard, for example, spiders, caterpillars and lady beetles (Remember that we are only observing these creatures and are not touching or picking them up. Only complete this activity under the supervision of a parent or carer). Three common methods of conducting a mini-creature survey are through observation, tree shakes and leaf litter hunts.

Observation Examine tree trunks, shrubs and the ground looking for mini creatures or evidence of their presence, for example, spiders’ webs, ant holes. Use a list or table to identify sightings and record observations. Note the area of the backyard in which observations were made.

Tree shakes Place a light-coloured piece of paper under a branch or a shrub or tree. Have a parent or carer shake the branch to dislodge any mini creatures. Identify the creatures and put your findings in a list or table also noting the types of plants they came from.

Leaf litter hunts Use a stick to gently scape away a small section of the top layer of leaf litter or mulch at the base of a plant. Observe any mini creatures uncovered and record your findings in a list or table.

Look at your results Analyse the results of the surveys looking for any patterns you might see. Compare the results for the different areas of your yard. Are there some areas that had a greater number of mini-creatures compared to others? Can you think of any reason why this is? What does a greater number of mini-creatures in one area tell us about the health of this habitat?

TASK

• Create a map of your backyard and label the areas you surveyed and the types of creatures you found there.

EXTENSION TASK

• Create a ‘report card’ on the health of the habitats investigated.

BACKYARD SURVEY

WHAT I OBSERVED WHERE I OBSERVED IT

BACKYARD MAP Draw a map of your backyard here and label its important features including any plants and where you found your mini creatures.
