STAGE 3 RESOURCES FOR
SCHOOLS & YOUNG PEOPLE
INTRODUCTION
“The weekend liturgy is, in a real sense, the shop window for the parish. The Third Stage will provide an emphasis on how we can build on this
Celebration to ensure that our parishes are mission oriented through our welcome, our liturgy and our hospitality.”
As we continue on our Hope in the Future journey together we turn our hearts and minds to the Sunday Eucharist. The Eucharist, a word meaning Thanksgiving, is often described as "the source and summit of the Christian life”. It is where we encounter Jesus in Word, Sacrament and in each other. It is where we receive the strength to continue on our journey with the Lord as Missionary Disciples. The Sunday Eucharist is often people’s first (and sometimes only) experience of the Church. With this in mind it is important that parishes ensure the welcome, the various ministries in the liturgy, the accessibility and the hospitality offered after Mass is the very best it can be so people new to the Church want to come back, and bring a friend because they feel part of the community and have an encounter with God. On behalf of the Hope in the Future Developing and Supporting School and Parish Links Working Party I am pleased to share with you resources and information of a number of formation and training days to assist you. It is important that we work together and share good practice across parishes, schools, deaneries and the diocese so if you have ideas which you think would help us all please get in touch. Please keep the Hope in the Future Programme and your Parish and School Community in your prayers. With my thanks for all that you do and prayers for the success of your Parish endeavours. Stay with us, Lord, on our journey. + John
Bishop John Arnold
"Mother Church earnestly desires that all the faithful
should be led to that fully conscious, and active
participation in liturgical celebrations which is demanded
by the very nature of the liturgy. Such participation by
the Christian people as "a chosen race, a royal
priesthood, a holy nation, a redeemed people (1 Pet.
2:9; cf. 2:4-5), is their right and duty by reason of their
baptism." Sacrosanctum Concilium 16

We have produced four videos and worksheets to help us to understand the Mass more and
more under the four themes of Encountering Jesus in Our Welcome, Our Listening, Our
Offering and Our Mission. These videos may be used in the school, parish or home by
individuals or small groups. Before watching the video, you could discuss and reflect on the
first set of questions and then after the video you could reflect on the second set of
questions.

THE LITURGICAL YEAR
Jesus is the centre of the Liturgical Year. As
a Church we follow the key parts of his life,
death and resurrection. The Liturgical Year
begins on the First Sunday of Advent and
runs through to the Solemnity of Christ the
King (November).
The Lectionary follows a Sunday and
Weekday Cycle. The Sunday Cycle is 3-
yearly and denoted by the letters A, B and
C. Each year follows through one of the
Gospels: A-Matthew, B-Mark, C-Luke. The
Gospel of John is proclaimed on particular
Sundays in each of the years. Weekdays in
Ordinary Time follow a 2 year cycle
numbered I and II. Year I is read in odd
number years: year II in even ones.
Liturgical Seasons
Advent
Advent is a season to prepare for Christmas when Christ’s first coming to us is remembered
and a season when that remembrance directs the mind and heart to await Christ’s Second
Coming at the end of time. Advent is a period for joyful expectation.
Christmas
Next to the yearly celebration of Easter, the Church holds most sacred the memorial of
Christ’s birth.
Ordinary Time
The Sundays of this season do not celebrate a specific aspect of the mystery of Christ.
Instead they are devoted to the mystery of Christ in all its aspects.
Lent
Lent is a preparation for the celebration of Easter. Lent is a time of preparation and penance.
Holy Week, which begins on the 6th Sunday of Lent, Palm Sunday, has as its purpose the
remembrance of Christ’s passion, beginning with his entrance into Jerusalem.
Easter Triduum
Christ redeemed us all and gave perfect glory to God principally through his paschal
mystery: dying he destroyed our death and rising he restored our life. Therefore the Easter
Triduum of the passion and resurrection of Christ is the culmination of the entire liturgical
year. The solemnity of Easter has the kind of pre-eminence in the year that Sunday has in
the week.
Easter Season
The fifty days from Easter Sunday to Pentecost are celebrated in joyful exultation as one
feast day, or better as one ‘great Sunday’ These are above all others the days for the singing
of the Alleluia.
Green – Ordinary Time
White – Christmas, Easter, Solemnities
Purple – Advent and Lent
Red – Palm Sunday, Good Friday, Pentecost, Martyrs
THE WORD OF GOD
Scripture is at the centre of everything the Church does. The word of
God shapes our prayer and worship. The Bible shows us how to
understand the world, how we are called to live and relate to each
other. God speak to us through Sacred Scripture which we are
celebrating in a special way during ‘The Year of the Word – The God
who speaks’. For more information and resources visit
www.cbcew.org.uk/home/events/the-god-who-speaks/
God speaks to us through the readings at Mass and through the priest
in the Homily who helps us to understand God’s word.
First Reading – read by a lay person
Usually taken from the Old Testament speaking about God’s relationship with his people
throughout history. On Sunday the first reading usually links with the Gospel. In the Easter
season the first reading is taken from the Acts of the Apostles and the beginnings of the
Church.
Responsorial Psalm – read by a lay person or sung
Psalms are songs to God. By saying/singing the refrain we respond to what God has said to
us in the first reading.
Second Reading – read by a lay person
Usually taken from one of the letters of St Paul or another apostle. Normally, there is no
second reading on weekdays.
Gospel – read by the priest/deacon
Taken from one of the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke or John) the Gospel is the words of
Jesus.
MINISTRIES
There are several people who help and serve at Mass by doing the
following ministries.
Deacon – proclaims the Gospel, delivers the homily, gives
instructions and helps at the altar.
Altar Servers – carry the cross and candles, help prepare the altar.
Readers – read the first reading, second reading and prayers of the
faithful.
Music group – lead the music including the hymns, Mass parts and
Psalm.
Eucharistic Ministers – help the priest distribute Holy Communion
in the church and bring Holy Communion to the sick who cannot get
to church.
Children’s Liturgy – help children to understand the readings and
theme at Mass during the Liturgy of the Word.
Sacristans – ensure that everything is prepared and ready before
Mass.
