of UBUNTU’FROM PAGE ONE

KwaDukuza SAPS Family Violence, ChildProtection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS)investigating officer Christina Subraylu, who was present during the visit, said theywere not happy with the sentence the rapistreceived.

She said the rapist who impregnated the29yearold was handed a 10 year suspended sentence despite the fact that there wasDNA proof that he was the father of thechild.

An angry Mdabe explained that he was

zens who are raped and abused will decrease.

“Let us bring back the spirit of Ubuntu.Losingonepersonislikelosinganation.Government can do everything for the community but it cannot succeed if there isn’t anybody to work with.”

SibhidlaSaphetha added that parentsshould continue to instil selfdisciplineamongst children as there is no greater education than respect.

She said there were many governmentalprogrammes aimed at fighting the abuse ofelderly citizens. SibhidlaSaphetha encour

aged the elderly to exercise so that they canmaintain a healthy lifestyle.

Three nongovernmental organisationsUmvini wokuphila, Nduduzweni and Multiskills each received a cheque worth R2000.

“The money that is being handed overhere was made from selling these white ribbons. It’s not a lot but it will definitely addvalue to the lives of some of our people”, saidMthembu.

iLembe District Municipality will continue with their gender violence awarenesscampaigns around the district until the endof the 16 days.

Visiting the New Guelderland rape survivor’s home from left are: iLembe mayor Welcome Mdabe, investigating officerChristina Subraylu, KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu, COGTA HOD Nonhlanhla Qoboshiyane and the rape survivor’smother Puplie Ranburn.

“This person madea plea bargain and heand his lawyer took advantage of an indigentfamily. He said hewould pay R1 000 amonth for maintenance and hasn’t paid acent. We can’t allow forthis to happen. Wemust make a noise anddo everything in ourpower. We cannot be silent,” he said.

The second visitwas to an elderly woman who lives alone inMadundube and wasrecently raped.

The delegation donated food parcels tothe woman. It washeard that the suspecthad been arrested andis yet to appear in court.

SibhidlaSaphethasaid she was pleased tohear that a couple fromthe neighbourhood islooking after the woman as the suspect hadreturned after the rape.

She urged the community to keep an eyeon her and to give herthe love and supportshe needs. She alsoasked the public to actively attend the courtcases.

“In most cases, suspects are known to usas the community. Weneed to agree that wedon’t need such peoplein our area. As the community we can get rid ofthem but we must do itthe legal way.

WEEKLY

IN these difficult financial times one cannot go by the income they receive from thesalaries paid by their employer. Othermeans of income become necessary.

With the many job cuts experience inthe country people are losing their jobs.Families are growing in size and much moreis required of a breadwinner. This is whereletting out your house or outbuilding becomes an option.

Starting a property management com

pany is a tough business, plain and simple.Landlords deal with the problems of

tenants who call to complain constantly, tenants who don’t pay their rent, andsometimes endless and very costly repairs.

Buying rental property and becoming alandlord comes with a lot of stress and responsibilities, and all of these things canturn a wellmeaning property owner intoan arrogant landlord.

As a landlord, it’s easy to start viewingtenants as cash cows and money makingmachines, instead of building a lastinglandlord/tenant relationship. But creatinga good connection with your tenants andmarketing yourself as a great landlord hasnumerous benefits. It will make workingwith your tenant on fixing repairs andshowing the property to prospective newtenants at the end of a lease go smoother, and your tenants are more likely to renew– possibly even with a rent increase. Here are some tips to becoming agreat landlord:Customise the lease You can get a

standard lease form at most stationerystores like CNA or Waltons.

This will cover basic things like rent, security deposit costs and any legal tenantrights. Use these basic documents as theframework for your own lease. Add in anyspecial rules you have for the property.

Use as much detail as possible and include everything from late payment feesto maintenance responsibility and tenant’s behaviour. A clear cut lease will reduce friction.Know the laws Each country has a landlord and tenant act that covers rent, security deposits, landlord and tenant obligations, tenant’s rights, and evictions. Youcan get a copy from the Department ofHousing website. Get to know these lawswell. Violating a tenant’s rights will lead toan unhappy tenant, and at worst, land youin civil court.

Make those Repairs When a tenantcalls with repairs, set up a time to inspectthe damage. If the repair doesn’t fall intothe emergency category, set up a time that

works best for the tenant. Tenants will respect you more if you let them know aheadof time when you plan to stop by.

Once you inspect the damage, schedulethe repair immediately.Keep the lines of communicationopen While you do not want your tenantharassing you at home or calling you at allhours of the day, you do not want to cutyourself off from your tenant completely.

Tenants feel more at ease when theyknow how to get in touch with their landlord. When a tenant moves in, give themyour business number right away. Betteryet, include an email address where thetenant can reach you.

This will cut down on the amount ofafterhours calls you get and help you keepa written record of communication between you and your tenant.Respect the tenant’s privacy Tenantswant their privacy. In fact, several countriesrequire that you give a tenant notice beforeyou enter the rental property.

You certainly shouldn’t abandon the

rental property altogether, especially if yoususpect the tenant may have caused damage, but let the tenant know ahead of timewhen you plan to stop in.Listen to the tenant’s concerns Every

property management company dealswith the odd nosy neighbour, overly concerned tenant, or cranky complainer, butmost tenants won’t contact the landlorduntil they feel they have to.

When you get a call from a tenant, listento his concerns and do the best you can tomake him feel like you addressed them.

Granted, you cannot do anything aboutthe neighbour’s lawn if that neighbour isn’tyour tenant, but you can mediate a disputebetween two of your own tenants. If youcan do something about the problem, tellthe tenant you will address it.Final WordThere doesn’t have to be a huge divide between leaser and leasee. By taking someof these tips into consideration, you canmake sure that you’re an attentive, proactive and understanding landlord.

As well as feeding children, theSchools Nutrition Programme is al-so providing a much-needed incomefor the500-plus farmers and helpers- more than 1 000 in total - who arealready growing the vegetables.

That number will increase as fur-ther farmers are identified.

Hundreds of tons of vegetables-butternut, cabbage, spinach, greenbeans, tomatoesandonions-haveal-ready been grown for schools by thefarmers in co-operatives in the fourmain areas of the region: Ndwedwe,Maphumulo, Mandeni andKwaDukuza.

“It is working like a charm andthere are certain co-operatives thathave already got more than R50 000in their bank accounts,” said Cllr.S.W. Mdabe, Mayor of iLembe Dis-trictMunicipality.He said the projectis achieving its aim of turning sub-sistence farmers into commercialfarmers.

As a result, the project receivedrecognition at the Municipality Ex-cellence Awards in 2013 in additionto scooping the Best CommunityProject Award for the iLembe Vine-yards and Co-operative Winery.

The project is being run by the lo-cal economic development agency,Enterprise iLembe, a districtmunici-pal entity.

It was selected by the provincialDepartment of Education as it hasthe most advanced developmentagency in the province.

Enterprise iLembe called in theexperts from Sigma International, aDurban-based management consul-tancy, which specialises in imple-mentation to assist with the roll-outof the project.

Newton said that after he ad-dressed the KZN cabinet on theprogress of the scheme, it was decid-ed to roll it out in the other 10district municipalities throughoutthe province, starting in January.

That will extend the programmeto some two million school childrenin more than 5 000 schools.

Several provincial governmentdepartments are involved in the

project. These include the Depart-ment of Agriculture, which providedthe original vegetable seeds, and theDepartment of Economic Develop-ment and Tourism.

The Department of Co-operativeGovernance and Traditional Affairshas also actively participated.

Mr. Zakhele Gumede, the ActingChief Executive of EnterpriseiLembe, says he is thrilled at thewaythe project has unfolded and is de-lighted that every district in theprovince will also be able to benefitfrom next year.

“It was really started from virginterritory and is enriching the lives of

so many people,” he said.“There are a lot of new farmers

involved and a lot of younger peoplecoming in too.

“It is quite satisfying.”Some of the seeds are grown in

DubeTradeport’sAgrizone and thenthe plants are grown on land culti-vated by the farming co-operatives.

The vegetables are then trans-ported by Enterprise Ilembe to agri-cultural hubs-cold storage facilities-where 22 people have already gottemporary jobs.

The vegetables are packed intothe correct amounts for each schooland are collected by service provid-

ers who distribute them to theschools.

The meals are prepared by dedi-cated food handlers.

EnterpriseIlembehasalsotrainedthe farmers in such skills as prepar-ing invoices, as well as the proce-dures in what to do to become sup-pliers for the school’s nutrition pro-gramme.

A spin-off is that the farmers’ ex-cess vegetables are now being soldto other customers, and the Gooder-son Hotel Group is one of the com-mercial customers to sign up for thelocally-grown vegetables.

REGULAR EXERCISE,adjustments increase immunity>> “When we are happy, our bodies heal faster”

RECENT studies show that regular exerciseas well as being adjusted (joints realignedby your Chiropractor) increase your bodiesability to fight off illness. How?

When we exercise, we sweat, we breathestronger and better, and the body is constantly releasing endorphins (good chemicals that help to reduce our pain and makeus feel better). This results in our circulationbeing optimal. Here, the body is able to fightoff any bacteria and viruses, thereby, maintaining a constantly welloxygenated flowof blood. Basically, more “good” cells areproduced and these fight off all the “bad”and unwanted cells in the body.

We are not meant to be SEDENTARY individuals. Those who live sedentary lives, inother words, those who DO NOT EXERCISE,are OVERWEIGHT, move slowly and lazily, always NEGATIVE, SAD AND DEPRESSED,have been found to be more prone toCHRONIC illnesses, with intense PAIN, and

SUFFERING.REGULAR EXERCISE reduces chances of

developing TB, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, cholesterol irregularities, osteoarthritisas well as other degenerative conditions. Abrisk walk or jog 3 or 4 times a week for upto 30min will reduce your chances of developing illnesss.

Also, studies have shown that if yourjoints are aligned by your chiropractor, regularly, that this will increase the amount of“fighter” and “helper” cells released into theblood, which increases your immunity. In astudy; people who were ill with the commoncold, but were adjusted regularly, had theircold and flu symptoms disappear FASTERthan those who were NOT treated by a Chiropractor. Those who had fever and coldwere better in approximately two days, when adjusted, as compared to up to twoweeks of healing time for those who wereNOT adjusted. Kindly note that this does not

mean that if YOU “click your bones” yourselfthat you will get better or increase your immunity faster.

Selfclicking will increase your chancesof developing conditions of degenerationssuch as osteoarthritis as well as create othercomplications.

When we exercise, and Look after ourbodies by getting regular checkups done, our bodies are healthy. Exercise will increaseour confidence, reduce stress and heal thebody. When we are happy, our bodies healfaster.

BE HAPPY, AND HEAL. FOR AN APPOINTMENT CONTACT DR NATASHASINGH.

Allergies in CHILDRENUnderstanding allergies and to reduce symptoms

WHAT IS AN ALLERGY?An allergy is an overreaction of the

immune system to a substance that'sharmless to most people. But in someone with an allergy, the body's immunesystem treats the substance (called anallergen) as an invader and reacts inappropriately, resulting in symptoms thatcan be anywhere from annoying to possibly harmful to the person.

In an attempt to protect the body, the immune system of the allergic person produces antibodies called immunoglobulin E (IgE). Those antibodies thencause mast cells and basophils (allergycells in the body) to release chemicals, including histamine, into the bloodstream to defend against the allergen"invader."

It's the release of these chemicalsthat causes allergic reactions, affectinga person's eyes, nose, throat, lungs, skin, or gastrointestinal tract as thebody attempts to rid itself of the invading allergen. Future exposure to thatsame allergen (things like nuts or pollenthat you can be allergic to) will triggerthis allergic response again. This meansevery time the person eats that particular food or is exposed to that particular

allergies are seasonal, and the type ofpollen a child is allergic to determineswhen symptoms will occur.

Molds, another common allergen, arefungi that thrive both indoors and outin warm, moist environments.

Pet allergens from warmblooded

animals can cause problems for kidsand parents alike

Cockroaches are also a major household allergen, especially in inner citiesCOMMON FOOD ALLERGENSCow's milk (or cow's milk protein).Cow's milk protein allergy (also called

formula protein allergy) means that theinfant (or child or adult) has an abnormal immune system reaction to proteins found in the cow's milk used tomake standard baby formulas, cheeses, and other milk products.

Eggs. One of the most common foodallergies in infants and young children, egg allergy can pose many challengesfor parents. Because eggs are used inmany of the foods kids eat — and inmany cases they're "hidden" ingredients

Seafood and shellfish. The proteinsin seafood can cause a number of different types of allergic reactions.

Peanuts and tree nuts. Peanuts areone of the most severe food allergens, often causing lifethreatening reactions.

OTHER COMMON ALLERGENS include insect stings, medicines, chemicalsSIGNS AND SYMPTOMSThe type and severity of allergy symptoms vary from allergy to allergy andchild to child. Allergies may show up asitchy eyes or an itchy nose, sneezing, nasal congestion, throat tightness, trouble breathing, and even shock (faintness or passing out).

Symptoms can range from minor ormajor seasonal annoyances (for exam

ple, from pollen or certain molds) toyearround problems (from allergenslike dust mites or food).

For airborne allergens, symptoms include : sneezing, itchy nose and/orthroat, nasal congestion, coughingFor food allergens, symptoms include:itchy throat when ingesting that particular food, hives, skin rash, abdominalcrampsDIAGNOSING ALLERGIESSome allergies are fairly easy to identifybecause the pattern of symptoms following exposure to certain allergens canbe hard to miss. But other allergies areless obvious because they can masquerade as other conditions. There are skin testing as well as bloodtest that can be performed to identifyallegies.TREATING ALLERGIESThere is no real cure for allergies, but itis possible to relieve symptoms, and reduce exposure to the allergens.

Caregiver education, and commencement of various antihistamines canhelp alleviate symptoms considerably.

For more information or to book anappointment, contact Dr Strini Chettyon 032 55 22 911.

allergen, he or shewill have an allergicreaction.WHO GETS ALLERGIES?

The tendency todevelop allergies isoften hereditary, which means it canbe passed downthrough your genes. However, just becauseyou, your partner, orone of your childrenmight have allergiesdoesn't mean that allof your kids will definitely get them, too.And someone usuallydoesn't inherit a particular allergy, just thelikelihood of havingallergies.

But a few kidshave allergies even ifno family member isallergic. A child who isallergic to one substance is likely to beallergic to others aswell.COMMON AIRBORNE ALLERGENSDust mites are one ofthe most commoncauses of allergies. These microscopic insects live all aroundus and feed on themillions of dead skincells that fall off ourbodies every day. Dustmites are the mainallergic component ofhouse dust, which ismade up of manyparticles and can contain things such asfabric fibers and bacteria, as well as microscopic animal allergens.

Pollen is anothermajor cause of allergies (most peopleknow pollen allergy ashay fever or rose fever). Trees, weeds, and grasses releasethese tiny particles into the air to fertiliseother plants. Pollen

Newmilestonefor Toyota SA Motors

Manufacturers proud of their popular Corolla

The 1 millionth proudly South African manufactured Corolla.

TEAM members at Toyota South Africa Motorslast week celebrated as the 1 millionth proudlySouth African manufactured Corolla rolled of theproduction line at the company's ProspectonPlant in Durban, KwaZuluNatal. The white Toyota Corolla that came off the production linelast week crowns six years of successful production in which the Corolla was produced in bothleft and right hand drive variants and exportedto regions including Eastern and Western Europe, the Caribbean and Africa.

"It is very symbolic that the Corolla reachesthis milestone now," says Dr Johan van Zyl, President and CEO of Toyota South Africa Motors. "Itnot only celebrates a very successful productionrun for the tenth generation world's favouritecar, but it heralds the introduction of the newCorolla in 2014."

The Corolla was first introduced in South Africa in 1975 and soon became South Africa's favourite family vehicle. It has been produced atToyota's Prospecton plant since introduction, while its local content was gradually increasedand the range widened to include left and righthand drive models for various export markets.

While the 1 millionth Corolla will find pride ofplace next to the 1 millionth Hilux in Toyota'smuseum at its Sales and Marketing Head Officein Sandton the Prospecton Plant is busy preparing the manufacturing facility for the start ofproduction of the new Corolla, which was revealed at the recent Johannesburg InternationalMotor Show in October.

"The Corolla benefitted from our R8 billioninvestment programme (first announced in2008), which modernised the plant and introduced a state of the art paint plant. With thenew Corolla we hope to start our next round ofinvestment and look forward to sharing this planwhen our first new generation Corolla modelsroll off the line," says Dr Van Zyl.

The record breaking Mini’s

THE people have spoken, and the word isout: Land Rover’s Range Rover is their SUVof choice.

In the annual People’s Wheels awards, initiated by Johannesburgbased publishers, The Future Group, responses from ordinary motorists are garnered with regard tothe vehicles they drive or those that they aspire to drive. More than 101 400 votes andover 1 500 ownership responses were received in the 2014 poll.

The Range Rover Evoque (already thewinner of more than 130 awards globally)added yet another by winning the SUVS andCrossovers Town and Country section with

a score of 24.71 percent. Interestingly, itscousin the Land Rover Freelander wasplaced second with 13.34 percent of thevotes.

The Range Rover Sport won the LuxuryTourers section with 14.55 percent, with itsstable mate the Range Rover in second spotwith 12.29 percent of the votes. Peter Biven,Jaguar Land Rover South Africa’s Marketingand Communications Director says: “We’revery proud to be held in such high regard bythe motoring public of South Africa and thisreinforces the esteem in which Range Roveris held.

It is clearly the SUV towards which peo

ple aspire and is a brand completely in touchwith the consumer.

“It is a tremendously exciting time forLand Rover and in the last 12 months we’velaunched not only an allnew Range Roverbut also an allnew Range Rover Sport, bothbased on similar lightweight aluminium architecture which has revolutionised the SUVsector in terms of combining performanceand dynamics with exceptional efficiency.

Add in the charisma and cachet of theRange Rover brand and it is no surprise thatit should emerge as the winner of two categories.”

HAPPY HEAVENLY 70 BIRTHDAY

“I have fought the good

fight,

I have kept the faith, and

have finished the race”

Timothy 4:7-8

DearMa

It’s only two months have

gone by, and we miss you

so much, losing you ma,

was themost difficult thing,

we have been through.

The day you left usma, our

hearts broke into two, and for the rest of our lives,

our thoughts will dwell in you. Ma, after all you

have been through, you have earned your place

in heaven. Your smile is engraved in our minds,

and your memories fill our hearts. How we long

just a fewminutes with you, just to be able to hear

your voice, your laugh and to hold you one last

time. We remember you every day and even

more on this special day “Your Birthday”.

Goodbyes are not forever, goodbyes are not the

end, they simply mean we will miss you, until we

meet again, Rest in PeaceMa.

Sadly missed by Mayson, Roja, Denver, Keegan,

Karishma, 2 Great-Grandchildren, 2 Brothers, 3
