Regular print textbooks were lacking in the following:

Adaptation of materials to suit to students interests and abilitiesInteractive functions, and the ability to provide the learner with a combination of textbooks, reference books, workbooks, dictionaries and multimedia contents such as video clips, animations, and virtual reality, both at school and at home. Easy, quick revision and correction in keeping with current findings.

Timeline of the E Textbook 1971 – Michael Hart started the Project Gutenberg with the goal of keeping track of books in physical libraries. The first digital book produced was the Declaration of Independence.

1985 –  Robert Stein founded the Voyager Company, which produced eBooks and made them available in CD-ROMs

1997 – Joseph Jacobson founded eInk Corp. This company improved on the e-paper concept developed by Xerox in the 1970s.

1993 –The very first eBook reader software was developed by Z.K. Zapata. It was called Digital Book V.1.

1998 – Two ebook readers were launched, the Rocket eBook and Softbook.

2000- VitalSource Technologies introduced a fully digitized curriculum product to several US dental schools

2005- Elsevier Health Science provided students with both print and digital copies of textbooks

2006 — Sony launched their eBook reader called Sony Reader.  It used the eInk screen display. It was soon followed by a host of other eInk book readers such as iRex, BeBook, and Amazon Kindle2007 – Course smart – a cooperative effort by major textbook publishers to put textbooks in digital form was establishedApril 2010 Apple released the first iPad withJuly 2010 - digital textbook initiative in California.
