Welcome to

Stratford-on-Avon District Council welcomes delegates

to the NABMA Annual Conference in Stratford-upon-

Avon. The theme ‘Celebrating Markets’ is something

the District Council, in partnership with Stratford-upon-

Avon Town Council, is continually promoting because we

believe that the markets held in the town are an integral

component of the local economy.

Both Councils are delighted that NABMA have again

chosen to come to Stratford-upon-Avon and hope the

Conference goes well and that delegates have the

opportunity to sample the many great things that the

town offers.

Our Conference HotelCrowne Plaza Stratford upon Avon is set amid landscaped gardens beside the River Avon, just 10 minutes off the M40 motorway. There is plentiful on-site parking and the town centre is a two-minute walk away. Stratford-upon-Avon railway station is a mile away, with frequent trains to London and Birmingham. The hotel has 259 modern rooms, a heated pool and a riverside terrace.

This year we make a return to Stratford-upon-Avon, a medieval market town

in the West Midlands and the 16th Century birth place of William Shakespeare.

Through our Great British Markets Awards, regional conferences and Love your

Local Market then NABMA is aware that we have some wonderful markets in the

UK. Many operators are presenting stories of innovation, partnership, investment

and new styles of management. Markets are recognised as a true asset in terms

of the community contribution, as a footfall generator and as valuable outlets for

entrepreneurship and start-up businesses.

Without doubt there is much to share in terms of good practice, opportunities

and challenges. Our conference will look at celebrating our markets and the

people that make the market industry so very important to the economic and

tourism values of town, cities and communities across the UK.

This Conference has added significance as we bid farewell to Graham Wilson, our

long serving Chief Executive, and welcome Hilary Paxman to that role. Hilary will

be sharing with us her thoughts and vision on NABMA’s future.
