INTRODUCTION

Reliance Hexham Pty Ltd is a major Australian manufacturer of mining machinery. The company has

specialised in the manufacture of suspension equipment for 20 years.

A full range of suspension equipment is manufactured for single rope, multi rope, balance rope and

guide rope systems, rope handling and shaft sinking operations. The product range includes the two

internationally recognised detaching hooks: King and Humble– the two major types of Capel: wedge

and thimble – and a wide range of chase blocks, sockets, links,

drawbars and swivels. As well as standard suspension equipment

fittings, the company has developed special purpose fittings such as

inverted wedge capels, jack catch sockets and inserted cone and tail

sockets.

The company’s staff prides themselves with their attention to quality,

commitment to service and innovativeness to develop the most cost

effective design solutions.

Reliance Hexham has facilities to undertake all aspects of suspension

equipment supply. This includes the latest 3D drawing programmes,

CNC machining, forging, heat treatment and nationally accredited

proof load test facilities.

SUSPENSION EQUIPMENT DESIGN

The supply of suspension equipment starts with design. Reliance Hexham equipment is designed for

both static load conditions and for fatigue. Safe design is of paramount importance. And in line with

Australian Standards & government regulations, Reliance Hexham suspension equipment has been

designed for static factor of safety of at least 10:1 and capable of withstanding 2.5 times the WLL

without permanent deformation to the suspension equipment. Screwed suspension fittings are

designed to a higher static of safety factor of 15:1.

Suspension equipment components are subjected to load fluctuations due to acceleration,

deceleration and oscillation of the conveyance as it wound up and down the shaft. During a

component lifetime, the component can experience well in excess of one million fluctuations. With

such a large number of load cycles, Reliance Hexham suspension equipment is designed for infinite

fatigue life.

For some suspension equipment components, conventional static elastic design theory is considered

adequate. In such cases, static elastic design is substantiated with computer aided design using finite

design techniques to verify equipment design.

SUSPENSION EQUIPMENT STEELS

Steels used in the manufacture of suspension equipment have been under continuous review,

research and testing. The essential qualities sought in the steel fatigue strength, ductility and

toughness. The most commonly accepted steel for suspension equipment is 1.5% manganese steels.

The choice of heat treatment may influence the cost of suspension equipment over its lifetime. All

attachments manufactured by Reliance Hexham are hardened and tempered in accordance with

Australian Standard Underground Mining Suspension Equipment AS3637 Part 1 – General

Requirements. Some countries mining regulations require that 1.5% manganese steel is in

normalised condition and be periodically re-normalised.

PRODUCT QUALITY ASSURANCE

Tests are carried out at critical stages of manufacture to ensure the suspension equipment is

manufactured to the appropriate statutory and company quality assurance standards. The steel is

ultrasonically examined prior to manufacture. Magnetic particle examination is carried out after

machining and proof load testing.

Additional tests may be carried out for detaching hooks. Test sample specimens are cut from the

steel used to manufacture detaching hooks and are subject to tensile and strain age testing.

After manufacture, the suspension equipment is proof load tested to ensure it is free from internal

defects. Head and balance rope suspension equipment are tested to two and half times their WLL.

The suspension equipment is subjected to magnetic particle testing to ensure the equipment is free

from surface defects. Once the suspension equipment has passed proof load testing and

examinations, it is then stamped in a low stress area with identification markings.

Finally, test certificates are issued certifying the mechanical properties and chemical analysis of steel,

ultrasonic, magnetic particle examination and proof load test results as well as identification numbers

in accordance with AS3637.1. This includes serial number, description, WLL, grade of steel, heat

treatment and weights. Separate certificates are issued for special purpose tests by nationally

recognised testing authorities.

SECTION 1 – SINGLE ROPE SUSPENSION SYSTEMS

INTRODUCTION

Reliance Hexham has extensive experience designing, manufacturing and supplying complete

arrangements of suspension equipment needed for single rope suspension systems. There is any

number of alternative arrangements of suspension equipment for single rope

systems and care and understanding must be exercised to select the most

cost effective arrangement. The most suitable suspension equipment fittings

can only be selected following careful consideration of mining regulations,

rope types, design of conveyance, location of conveyance with respect to

headframe, sheave wheel, catch plate or bell and buffer beam and

arrangements to cap the rope.

The rope terminal connection is usually a wedge type Capel or white metal

(or resin) filled (or resin filled) socket. Wedge type capels are probably the

most widely used method of capping the wire rope; they can be used on all

types of rope.

There are three types of detaching hooks used widely throughout the world.

They all operate on a similar principal. Each type of hook has its own

supporters and adherents. Reliance Hexham designs and manufactures

three types: King and Humble. At higher safe working loads, the King and

Humble types are designed with strengthened intrados to reduce the hooks

physical size.

These key suspension equipment items are connected to each other by

purpose designed links, chase blocks and compensating plates.

Chase blocks are favoured over chain links and shackles because of their

precision, greater bearing area and their ability to absorb shock loading

following an overwind.

Reliance Hexham engineers have endeavoured to design the equipment to

be interchangeable with suspension equipment supplied by other

manufacturers. Where it is necessary to make modifications to our

equipment to make it fully interchangeable, full design calculations will be

carried out to check that the design meets the design criteria for suspension

equipment

WEDGE TYPE CAPELS

The wedge type Capel is used many countries for capping wire ropes. The Capel works on the

principle of self tightening action of two interlocking tapered wedges acting on the wire rope to grip ad

hold the wire firmly in place.

The Capel assembly consists of the following items:

A pair of interlocking wedges that is profiled to suit the rope diameter.

The Capel frame which is shaped like a large tuning fork.

Capel bands, which fit around and enclose the Capel frame and a rope

end safety block

The profiled wedges are placed on opposites sides of the rope. A gap is left

between the wedges so that the wedges are tightened and can compress that

wire rope and grip more tightly. The Capel frame is placed around the wedges.

The wedges are secured firmly in place by driving the Capel bands along the

Capel frame. The Capel bands also use a wedging action to squeeze the limbs

of the Capel frame hard against the interlocking wedges. The rope end safety

block is mounted on the end of the wire rope with the use of white metal (or

resin). If the rope should slip, the safety block will grip the interlocking wedges

more tightly into the Capel frame then exert greater grip on the wire rope.

The wedge type Capel can be used with stranded and locked coil ropes. Capel

wedges are stamped with the matching rope type and size. It is a good idea,

when buying new winding rope to request a 2 metre (6 foot) sample length of

wire rope for reference purposes and for machining the wedge profiles. The

rope sample should be kept for the life of the rope in case any queries should

arise.

When ordering wedge type capels please specify:

Reliance wedge type Capel part number

Rope type and size

Safe working static load of the Capel

Engineering details of connecting links.

Under no circumstances should a Capel be fitted to a wire rope without the

white metal (or resin) safety block. Also, it is considered bad practice to use their

interlocking wedges and Capel bands from another Capel. Capel component are

custom made, and the Capel should be considered an integral part.

Reliance Hexham engineers have endeavoured to design the Reliance product

range to be interchangeable with suspension equipment supplied by the other

manufacturers. Should you require a size not shown in the table, or should the

size for the fitting not match your fitting, please let us know. In many instances,

custom designed fittings can be supplied or modifications made to our standard

range. Should it be necessary to supply non-standard design, we will as a

matter of course supply full design calculations in addition to our normal quality

assurance checks and certification.

WHITE METAL (OR RESIN) FILLED WIRE ROPE SOCKETS

Reliance Hexham white metal (or resin) filled wire rope sockets conform to the internationally

accepted National Board specification No. 465:1965 British Standard BS463 Part 2:1970 for wire

rope socket. White metal (or resin) filled wire rope sockets are used on both hoist and balance ropes.

White metal (or resin) filled wire rope sockets are capped by pouring molten white metal (or resin)

into specially prepared wire rope socket. Because of danger of combustions, white metal (or resin)

filled wire rope sockets cannot be capped in gaseous upcast shafts.

Capping a wire rope with a white metal (or resin) filled wire rope socket is a specialist job and proper

care must be taken to ensure a sound connection. The white metal (or resin) must be the correct

chemical composition, and heated to the correct temperature. The socket must be pre-heated

uniformly to the correct temperature. Careful cleaning of wires throughout the brush is essential. The

socket must be the correct size for the wire rope. We recommend the British National Coal Board

publication Ropeman’s Handbook, Clark Constable Ltd Edinburgh, 1980 as a reference for capping

white metal (or resin) filled wire rope sockets.

DETACHING HOOKS

A detaching hook is a statutory safety device used in drum winding installations. Its purpose is to

detach the mine conveyance from the hoisting rope in the event of the winder failing to stop in the

headframe and overwinding. For installations which do not incorporate an overwind safety catch, the

detaching hook has the additional function of catching and supporting the conveyance in the

headframe.

Reliance Hexham manufactures the two styles of detaching hooks: Humble and King. The two hooks

operate on similar principles using a catch plate.

A detaching hook is activated as it passes through a bell or catch plate. The shear pin, which holds

the detaching hook in the closed position, is sheared. The detaching hook is forced open, and locked

in the open position. This releases the wire rope from the detaching hook. The hook and conveyance

falls back under gravity, but is caught by the ball or catch plate.

All Reliance Hexham hooks are carefully designed for static and dynamic load conditions with a static

factor of safety of at least 10 to 1 and a fatigue reserve factor of 1:3. The hooks are manufactured

from approved 1.5% manganese or nickel chrome molybdenum alloy steel, and heat treated in

accordance with national mining standards. They are designed to operate automatically in event of

overwind, and withstand the substantial fall-back stresses that follow hook detachment. All hooks are

designed so that they can easily be reset to the locked position and released from the catch plate or

bell.

Although the detaching hook may never be called to operation in a real life situation. Careful thought

must go into the selection of the hook and associated suspension equipment components. It is

important when ordering a detaching hook to check out clearances and ensure other suspension

fittings, and winder head frame structures do not foul the hooks operation. When ordering detaching

hooks, please specify the type of detaching hook which are King, Improved King, Humble, Improved

Humble.

KING STYLE DETACHING HOOK

The King style detaching hook is made with two inner plates and two outer plates. The hook is

designed such that the inner plates take the load.

The hook region in the larger capacity hooks is thickened to improve the hooks carrying capacity

without necessarily increasing the hooks overall size.

The King type of hook is designed for use with catch plates. The load ratings and key dimensions are

shown in the accompanying tables.

HUMBLE TYPE DETACHING HOOK

The Humble style detaching hook is made with two inner plates and two outer plates. The two outer

plates are connected are their base with a spacer piece. The two inner plates are shaped like a hook

and are connected together scissor fashion with a pin that passes through the outer and inner plates.

Both the inner and outer plates are designed to take the load. The load is transferred from the hook

end of the inner plates to the hinge pin and then to the outer plates. The outer plates transfer the load

to a connecting shackle or chase block.

The hook region in the larger capacity hooks is thickened to improve the hooks carrying load capacity

without necessarily increasing the hooks overall size.

The Humble type hook is designed for use with catch plates. The load ratings and key dimensions

are shown in the accompanying tables.

SECTION 2 – MULTI ROPE SUSPENSION SYSTEMS

INTRODUCTION

The first four rope friction winder in the world was installed in 1947, and since that time there has

been continual evolution in design. There are different suspension equipment considerations with

multi rope friction winders to that of single rope suspension systems for single and double drum

winders.

The terminal rope connection is normally a wedge type Capel, a thimble Capel or socket. The wedge

type Capel has been used for many years and its use is well accepted in the mining industry. The

thimble Capel has not been used as extensively as wedge type capels, but it is gaining popular

support because of its ease in recapping and tensioning.

The suspension equipment is connected directly to the conveyance with purpose designed links.

Regulations vary from country to country and it may be necessary to recap the rope and insert a

chase block link to make up for the rope piece cut from the end of the rope. Should the rope have a

statutory life of two years and it must be recapped every six months, then three right angle chase

block links will be required over the life of the rope. Other

country’s regulations are less severe.

Equal tension should be maintained in each of the ropes. This

requires some means of measuring the rope tension and some

means of making fine adjustments in the rope. There are a

number of systems available for adjusting the rope tension.

These range from simple adjustable swinging plate links, and

telescopic links with hydraulic adjustment.

The relative rope tension in each rope can be determined by

stopping the conveyance marking the rope with pencil on chalk,

starting the winder and moving the conveyance for a distance of

two to three drum revolutions. The relative position of the pencil

marks indicates the tension in each rope. Alternatively

suspension links with strain gauges inserted in the link or

suspension equipment load cells may be used to measure the

relative tension in each wire rope.

THIMBLE CAPEL

The thimble Capel is being used more widely with the multi-rope friction

winders. The main advantage of thimble capels over wedge capels is in

rope capping and rope tensioning. With wedge capels, the rope must be

cut to length before capping. With thimble capels, the rope can be cut after

the rope is capped. This avoids the possibility of cutting too much, or too

little off the end of the rope. Thimble Capel also eliminate the for expensive

adjustment linkage for accommodating rope stretch on friction winding

hoist ropes.

The thimble works on the principle of self tightening wedges gripping the

wire rope. The greater the load on the wire rope, the greater the thimble

Capel grips on the wire rope. The wire rope is laid around the thimble and

pulled hard into two wedge shoes. The vertical shoe ensures the rope

centre-line coincides with the centre of the Capel connecting pin to

eliminate bending stresses. The other shoe is pivoted to ensure it lines up

with the thimble and grips the wire rope along its whole length.

Adjusting the Capel is a straight forward process. An adjustment whole is

drilled through the outer plates and through the thimble. The thimble is

pulled back to give clearance at the wedges and a bar is inserted through

the outer plates and thimble. The wire rope may then be pulled around the

thimble for rope capping and tensioning.

The thimble Capel, however, is not used on single rope drum winder

installations. It is too wide to pass through the detaching hook catch plate

or bell.

FINE ADJUSTMENT LINKAGES

In multi rope suspension systems, the load should be equally distributed amongst the ropes.

This can be done with a combination of coarse and fine adjustment linkages. Right angle chase

blocks can be used for coarse adjustment, and fine adjustment can be accomplished with a fine

adjustment linkage.

Fine adjustment linkages consist of an upper and lower sliding member, and a number of adjustment

blocks. The fine adjustment linkage is normally packed between the rope terminal connection and the

conveyance.

Load cells may be installed in suitable locations to measure the tension in each rope. The rope

tension is adjusted by inserting or removing adjustment blocks in the upper and lower sliding

members of the fine adjustment linkage.

SECTION 3 – BALANCE ROPE

SUSPENSION SYSTEMS

INTRODUCTION

The balance rope is an integral part of a friction winder and the same

care and attention to detail must be applied to the selection of

suspension equipment as applied to head rope suspension equipment.

The rope terminal equipment is usually an inverted wedge type Capel,

a white metal (or resin)led socket or a rope thimble. Reliance Hexham

developed inverted wedge Capel as an alternative to the wedge type

Capel for balance roped systems. The inverted wedge Capel has the

advantage that the Capel Frame splays outwards, reducing the

chance of the bands being dislodged by falling objects or vibration.

The thimble Capel cannot be used with all types of ropes, but it has

the advantage that the rope can be easily capped.

It is usual practice to connect a right angled chase block link and a wire rope swivel to the Capel, thimble or socket. The swivel takes the twist out of the rope as the conveyance moves up and down the shaft. The right angle chase block provides an added degree of freedom and helps prevent the possibility of the swivel spindle binding on the swivel collar. Lubrication of the swivel is difficult due to the location of the swivel and the placement of the swivel grease nipples. Swivels are normally designed with the spindle hanging downwards. This helped eliminate the ingress of dirt and moisture into the body of the swivel. Reliance Hexham provides swivels with either female or male end connection. Careful selection of the swivel end connection often eliminates the need for additional linkage members.

The swivel is usually connecting to the underside of the conveyance

with a purposed designed link.

INVERTED WEDGE CAPELS

The inverted wedge Capel is similar to the tapered wedge Capel. It has the same component parts,

and works on the same principle of self tightening action of tapered wedges acting on the wire rope.

The Capel is designed for use with balance ropes. The Capel arms splay outwards rather than

inwards. The Capel is tightened onto the rope by driving the Capel bands towards the end of the

Capel arms rather than towards the Capel eye.

With balance ropes, the Capel is fastened to the underside of the cage, skip or counterweight. The

Capel arms hand downwards. The inverted wedge Capel gives an added measure of safety over

tapered wedge capels because the Capel bands are less likely to be loosened by falling objects or

vibration.

When ordering inverted wedge capels, please specify the following information:

Under no circumstances should a Capel be fitted to the wire rope without the safety clamp.

WHITE METAL (OR RESIN) FILLED WIRE ROPE SOCKETS

Reliance Hexham white metal (or resin) filled wire rope sockets conform to the internationally

accepted Nation Coal Board specification No. 465:1965 and British Standard BS463 Part 2:1970 for

wire rope sockets. White metal (or resin) filled wire rope sockets are used on both hoist and balance

ropes.

White metal (or resin) filled wire rope sockets are capped by pouring molten white metal (or resin)

into the specially prepared wire rope socket. Because of danger of combustion, white metal (or resin)

filled wire rope sockets cannot be capped in gaseous upcast shafts.

Capping a wire rope with a white metal (or resin) filled wire rope socket is a specialist job and proper

care must be taken to ensure a sound connection. The white metal (or resin) must be the correct

chemical composition, and heated to the correct temperature. Careful cleaning of the wires

throughout the brush is essential. The socket must be the correct size for the wire rope. We

recommend the British National Coal Board publication Ropeman’s Handbook ,’,Clark Constable Ltd,

Edinburgh, 1980 as a reference for capping white metal (or resin) filled wire rope sockets.

The range of Reliance Hexham white metal (or resin) filled wire rope sockets is shown in the

accompanying table. All Reliance Hexham white metal (or resin) filled wire rope sockets are

machined from solid 1.5% manganese steel billets.

WIRE ROPE THIMBLES

Wire rope thimbles are suitable terminal fitting for capping round, multi-strand balance ropes. The

main advantage of wire rope thimble is that the rope does not have to be cut to length before capping

the rope.

To cap the balance rope, the free end of the rope is bent around the thimble, then laid back along the

working rope and adequately secured by a number of four bolt clamps, and an apex clamp at thimble

apex.

The whole assembly is suspended beneath the cage, skip or counterweight by purpose designed

suspension links and wire rope swivel.

WIRE ROPE SWIVELS

Wire rope swivels are normally used with balance rope systems. They are used for taking the twist

out of the rope as the conveyance moves up and down the shaft. The swivel must be designed not

only for the changing suspended weight of the wire rope handing from the swivel, but for the correct

starting torque on the swivel bearings. Swivel bearings should not be too tight, or too free. The

uncontrolled use of swivels for releasing twist is considered bad practice. Swivels must be properly

maintained and kept greased to ensure the swivel does not seize.

The swivel is protected against the ingress of water and foreign matter by a labyrinth seal. A grease

nipple is fitted to the top of the swivel for easy greasing of the heavy duty thrust bearing.

Swivels are available with make (tongue) or female (clevis) ends. Some swivels are designed to take

the thrust load in one direction only, and designed to hang in one direction to stop the ingress of dirt

and moisture. They cannot be end-for-ended. The top of the swivel must always be mounted in the

up position. When buying swivels, please check the end connections are correct if there is a female

connection at one end and a male connection at the other end.

It is good practice to fit a right angle chase block to the bottom of the swivel to minimise and lateral

load on the swivel spindle causing it to bind or rub against the swivel collar.

SECTION 4 – MANOEUVRING & GUIDE ROPE EQUIPMENT

INTRODUCTION

One of the difficulties of wire rope is manoeuvring the rope onto the position

and tensioning the rope. The Reliance Hexham range of wedge suspension

glands were designed to make it much easier to move, reposition,

manoeuvre and tension locked coil and stranded wire rope.

The wedge suspension glands may be used as a permanent rope anchor

fitting, or may be used for just manoeuvring and pre-tensioning the wire rope

while the permanent fitting is installed in position.

In mining applications, the wedge suspension gland may be used for

manoeuvring hoist, balance, guide and rubbing ropes during installation

and maintenance. Wire rope or chain pullers may be connected by a

shackle t the wedge suspension to pull and tension the wire rope into the

correct position.

Where the wedge suspension glands are used for suspending guide, and

rubbing ropes, the gland boxes have a drilled rectangular base for bolting the

wedge suspension gland permanently in position. The wedge suspension

gland can also be fitted with a spherical seat to allow for misalignment

between the wire rope and the gland. The spherically seated gland is very

suitable for rubbing ropes. The spherical seat allows the rubbing rope

to be turned periodically to even the wear around the ropes surface.

Wedge suspension glands have been used in many applications outside

the mining industry. The glands have been used for erecting large tower

structures, for securing mooring cables on North Sea oil drilling rigs and

building large suspension bridges. In fact they can be used in any application

where larger diameter wire rope is used.

The Reliance Hexham wedge suspension glands are built for rugged use. The

glands are generously sized and machined from steel billet.

WEDGE SUSPENSION GLANDS

The Reliance wedge suspension glands are used for suspending, anchoring, manoeuvring and

tensioning wire rope. The wedge suspension gland work on the principle of self tightening wedges

acting on the wire rope to grip and hold the wire rope firmly in place.

The wedge suspension gland consists of gland box and two interlocking tapered wedges profiled to

suit the wire rope. The wedge suspension gland may also be fitted with a pair of shackles for the

purpose of moving and manoeuvring the wire rope more easily. The wedge suspension gland can

have a drilled base so that it can be permanently bolted in position, or it may have a separate

spherical seated base to accommodate misalignment between the gland and the wire rope.

The installation of wedge suspension glands is very simple. The gland box halves are placed on both

sides of the wire rope and bolted together at the required position. The two interlocking tapered

wedges are placed around the rope and slid into gland box. They are then driven into gland box until

they are tight in the gland box, and firmly grip the rope. At least two 2 bolt rope safety clamps should

be bolted at right angles to one another above the wedges. The purpose of these clamps is to pull the

wedges tighter into the rope if the rope starts to slip through the gland. Finally to visually check for

slip, mount a tell tale clamp on the rope but separated by a short distance from the safety rope

clamps. For a detailed description on how to assemble the wedge suspension glands, we

recommend you refer to the Ropeman’s Handbook, Clark Constable Ltd, Edinburgh, 1980.

SECTION 5 – SPECIALISED SHAFT SINKING EQUIPMENT

INTRODUCTION

The conventional shaft sinking equipment consists of winding rope Capel, detaching hook,

suspension equipment links, riding lifting cone, sinking rider and clivvy hook.

The winding rope Capel may be wedge type Capel, a white metal (or resin)led wire rope socket and if

the rope suitable, an inserted cone and tail socket.

The detaching hook may be one of the two accepted types: King and Humble. In some countries,

however, detaching hooks are not allowed for shaft sinking purposes. There is greater possibility in

shaft sinking operations that the detaching hook could be knocked, thereby shearing its copper shear

pin and opening the hook. This would then allow the kibble to fall, with the potential of serious

damage and injury.

The lifting cone is designed to engage the sinking rider assembly and lift the sinking rider. This

assembly is designed to guide the kibble smoothly up the shaft.

The clivvy hook is designed with a special locking tongue to prevent the possibility of the kibble

separating from the hook.

The Reliance Hexham jack catch socket was designed to overcome the objections of the detaching

hook. It is meant to replace the Capel and the detaching hook. This allows it to keep the dead weight

down of the suspension equipment fittings and so increase the kibble load.

As a safety device, the jack catches socket is designed that if an overwind should occur, the jack

catch socket will ride up and through a series of jack catches and strike the crash beam. Should the

winding rope break or should the winder suddenly drop the load, the jack catch socket is designed to

fall back onto the jack catches, and be supported by the jack catch collar.

JACK CATCH SOCKETS

The jack catch socket has been specially designed for shaft sinking operations. In the event of an

overwind, the jack catch socket with ride up through the jack catches and strike the crash beam.

Should the winder then drop the load to should the wire rope break, the jack catch socket will drop

back onto the jack catches. The kibble, chains, lifting cone and suspension equipment will be held by

the collar of the jack catch socket.

The jack catch socket eliminates some of the suspension equipment fittings normally used in shaft

sinking operations. This reduces the dead weight of suspension equipment fittings, and allows

operators to increase the kibble payload.

The socket is a white metal (or resin)led filled socket and the same capping procedures that are used

for white metal (or resin)led filled sockets are used with the jack catch socket.

SECTION 6 – MISCELLANEOUS EQUIPMENT

CAGES & SKIPS

Reliance Hexham can supply a range of cages and skip designed to suit most applications. The

cages range from simple two man cage to 80 man, double deck men and material cage. The cages

are designed for lightness and strength using high strength low alloy steels, and if permitted

underground, aluminium panels can be used for added lightness.

An essential part of the cages is the cage gripper gear mechanism that is designed to grip the steel

or timber guides when the load is taken off the winder. This normally consists of drawbar, coil spring

mechanism and shafts running out to the grippers mounted on opposite sides of the cage.
