One of Edinburgh’s best known ghost stories concerns a young bagpiper who disappeared without a trace. Back in the day, a secret tunnel was discovered beneath
Edinburgh Castle, heading down the Royal Mile towards Holyrood House. As the opening to the tunnel was so small, a young boy was sent down with his bagpipes to
investigate. He played the pipes loudly as he walked through the tunnel, so people above ground could work out where the tunnel went.
Around the Tron Kirk the shrill of the pipes stopped. Despite search parties being sent to find the boy, he was never seen again. With the piper presumed dead, the tunnel was
blocked up - but many people still report hearing the faint, ghostly sound of underground bagpipes to this day. When you visit our toilets, listen carefully, you just might hear the
faint sound of the lost piper boy playing on his chanter………..

Edinburgh Castle was a key location when witchcraft hysteria swept across Scotland in the 16th and 17th centuries. Around 300 alleged witches were imprisoned and tortured
in the Tolbooth, just around the corner from this very pub and at Edinburgh Castle, before being executed on Castlehill. One of the most famous ‘witches’ was Lady Janet Douglas of Glamis, who was accused of witchcraft and conspiring to kill King James V.
Her servants had been tortured into confessing her guilt and in 1537 she was burnt alive at the stake - with her young son forced to watch.
Visitors to the castle have reported seeing the ghostly figure of Lady Janet roaming the halls and weeping. There have also been stories of a hollow knocking sound heard at night, attributed to ghostly workmen building the platform on which she was burnt. People have
even claimed to see shadowy figures and ghostly orbs in the dungeon where people like Lady Janet’s servants (as well as prisoners of war and enemy spies) were tortured and left
to die.

Sigmund Neuberger, known by the stage name, The Great Lafayette, was the highest paid magician of his time, wowing global audiences with dramatic illusions and tricks.
He came to Edinburgh in 1911 to perform his breath-taking stage show, in the Empire Place Theatre, where the modern Edinburgh Festival Theatre now stands.
While taking a bow after his infamous ‘Lion’s Bride’ act where he would swap places with a caged African Lion, he knocked over a lamp which the set the stage on fire.
The fire claimed the life of The Great Lafayette and ten others. The strangest part of this tale occurred several days after the funeral of The Great Lafayette, when another body – adorned with Lafayette expensive rings – was found in the debris. It was soon discovered that the first body was Lafayette’s body double. Backstage crew at the Festival Theatre have reported seeing the apparition of a tall, dark stranger, believed to be the ghost of
The Great Lafayette.

Back in the 90’s, renowned Japanese psychic, Aiko Gibo came to visit Mary King’s Close while making a film about the most haunted places of Britain. When it came to stepping
inside a 17th century room off Allan’s Close, she could barely enter due to feelings of pain and unhappiness present. ‘I cannot enter this room… it is too strong… there is a child beside me, her little hand is clutching my trouser leg. I… I just cannot go into this room…
she was separated from her parents. She wants to go home and see her family… her desire haunts this place very strongly.’
Eventually, Gibo was able to cross the threshold. Inside the room, she communicated with the young girl’s spirit near the fireplace. Her name was Annie and she heartbroken as she has lost her favourite doll. Gibo purchased a doll from a local Royal Mile shop and
returned to the little girl. Gibo stated the doll apparently brought comfort to the child and said so long as the doll remains, it is said that the room will never again be disturbed
by her spirit. Visitors often leave little dolls for Annie to this day.

A Death Coach was a horse drawn carriage traveling around cities collecting souls of the sadly departed. Edinburgh had it’s very own Death Coach which usually travelled around
the Royal Mile and surrounding areas in the Old Town. It was described by those who had seen it as a glowing, ghostly carriage drawn by black horses. Sightings of the Death Coach on Royal Mile are believed to signal an imminent disaster in the city. Keep your
eyes and ears peeled!
