According to City of Tacoma staff, the bridge's beams, sidewalks, guardrails and deck have deterio- rated to the point that traffic lanes and the sidewalks have been closed, and signs have been posted announc- ing reduced truck loads. The bridge serves as a key transportation corridor between downtown Tacoma and the Lincoln International Business District, and allows business activities, commuters, school activi- ties, and emergency vehicles to circulate freely within Tacoma, according to City staff. In August 2012, councilmembers awarded a $1.2 million contract to Bellevue, Wash.-based TranTech Engineering to complete the bridge design. "The consultant provided additional services dur- ing the design of the project, including adding a new pile supported sidewalk and slope stability analysis that were not anticipated in the original agreement," wrote Public Works Director Kurtis D. Kingsolver and Engineering Division Manager Chris E. Larson in a memo earlier this month describing the need for ad- ditional funding. "Additional funds for this contract are necessary to finalize the bid documents for adver- tisement and provide consultant services during the construction phase." Adult artists or artist teams who already possess strong artistic skills are needed to work with the community to design and implement high-quality outdoor painted murals in select communities in Tacoma. Applicants must be professional artists, 18 years or older, and avail- able to lead a mural in the summer of 2014. Applicants must also reside in Pierce county or have graduated from the Tacoma Murals Proj- ect as either an apprentice artist or lead artist between 2010 and 2013 and been added to the Tacoma Murals Project public roster. The dead- line for artist applications is midnight on March 28, 2014. Community groups who would like an out- door mural painted at a specific site in their neighborhood to fight blight and combat vandal- ism are also needed. Community groups must, with property owner permission, propose spe- cific mural walls. Proposed mural walls must be on commercial or public property and located within Tacoma city limits. Priority will be given to sites located in areas without a good repre- sentation of public art and/or that are highly visible to the public. It is tentatively projected that five mural sites will be selected for 2014. The deadline for community applications is midnight on April 4, 2014. Twenty-one murals have been completed between 2010 and 2013. More information is available online at cityoftacoma.org/artsopps. City seeks artists for Tacoma Murals Project
