Tens of Pokemons

“It’s Saturday!” Ben yelled. He has waited all week for this day to come. In just a few short minutes his best friend from school will arrive to celebrate his birthday.

*Ding Dong* When Ben heard the bell ring he jumped up and greeted Marc at the door. “Hey Ben, Happy birthday this is for you!” Marc said as he handed Ben a pack of ten Pokemon cards. Ben has been wanting to begin his collection since all his friends had Pokemon cards. “Thanks!” said Ben.

How many ones does a ten have in it?

As Ben and his friend were playing with their cards, he heard a knock on the door. “Ben you have a friend” his mom said. Ben was surprised to see John come into the room since he wasn’t expecting anyone else. “Hey Ben! This is for you.” John handed Ben 7 packs of Pokemon cards.

Ben had one pack of cards and he just got 7 more packs. How many packs of ten does Ben have in all now? What’s the number?

“Woah! Thanks man!” Ben, John, and Marc didn’t waste any time and quickly began looking through all their cards.

Just then the bell rang. It was Greg with more Pokemon cards for Ben. “ 8 packs of cards? Wow! Thank you! I must have more than you all now!” Ben said excitedly.

Ben’s first got 1 pack of cards, then 7, and then 8 how many packs of ten does he have now?

“No way!” Ben’s friends all said together. All of his friends took out their own cards and began to count. There was one problem though, they didn’t know how to begin! Their cards were no longer in its packs, but put all together in a bag. “I have WAY too many to count” Marc said. All Ben’s friends agreed.

“Nothings too difficult! How about you group your cards by place value?” Ben said. Marc started first. Well here are all my cards.
