STEM
For the last 3 weeks our STEM Room has been upgraded. I am happy to say it is now completed with a modern and fresh look. The new design will give students more space to create, store and test their projects, enabling them to aim bigger and better.
We have also added purpose built work areas e.g. a hot glue gun station. This combined with better acoustics makes the space a more productive teaching and learning space. Feel free to pop your head in and let your child show you around.
This school is a Nut Free Zone. We have several children attending our school who have a life threatening allergy to nuts.
Thank you for your support.

ALL ABOUT MARDI
Last Thursday was Mardi’s bi-annual review for her Pastoral Care role. We are very pleased she has met the required criteria with flying colours. As part of the review I was required to write and give a report of all the things that Mardi does to support the students of Hahndorf Primary. It didn’t take me long to create quite a list. Mardi goes above and beyond and we would like to acknowledge her for all the things that she does. Here is a snapshot of my report:-
Supports students to access the full curriculum and provides social support on camps, excursions and in the yard
Mardi is a driver in the implementation of Kimochis, which was referenced by many parents in our survey
Assists teachers with special projects in class times
Mardi informs parents through newsletter articles in a variety of contexts regarding support for families to the latest research on social media etc.
Friendship groups
Lunchtime activities
Staff wellbeing – morning tea / random acts of chocolate / coffee runs
Liaison between school and community groups
Photographic recording of school events
Literacy support to parents
Rock painting and delivery
Craft groups
School events – Concert / Remembrance Days
1:1 support
Organises food for students who have forgotten their lunch
Enables classes to go on local walks
Just being someone that people can talk to
Thank you Mardi. We think you’re great! Please note school
supervision begins at 8.30am.
Please contact Out of School Hours Care on 8388 7420 for
before school care.
STAFFING Term 4
We would like to thank Sophie Tarney for the work that she has done in rooms 5 and 6 this term. We wish her all the best in her new position at Glen Osmond Primary School next term. Both Cara and Ali will be returning to full-time next term.
All other staffing will remain the same.
LIONS COMMUNITY FIREWORKS NIGHT
In a previous newsletter I advised you to save the date for a fireworks night that was going to be held by the Lion’s Club on the 29th of September. Due to circumstances beyond their control the event has been cancelled. They are now looking to hold a community event in 2020.

TERM 3 RECYCLING CHALLENGE UPDATE

Well done!
The Recycling Team
“And this is the official start of the Australian Human Powered Vehicle Super Series 24hr race at Murray Bridge” yelled the announcer over the loud speakers.
As the trikes flew by, I knew that this was going to be a great weekend. From the smoky smell of snags of the BBQ to the sound of trikes rolling at crash corner. Time flew by and it was my time to get in the trike and win this race, I hopped in as my team mate got out. I managed to get the fastest lap for our team which was a 2 minute 40 second lap, and bring us into a steady 7th place - which didn’t last long! During the middle of the night I got up and hopped on the training bike to warm up. I got in the trike and honestly riding at night was better because the cold air cooled our sweaty bodies down. Overall, our team placed 10th in our category and we all enjoyed it. I would like to thank all the parents and kids for all the effort they put in over the weekend. I recommend anybody who would like to try Pedal Prix to go along next year and try it out. Benjamin, Rm S7

We had 10 riders at
Murray Bridge who all
did an excellent job of
helping the team to
finish 10th out of 50 in
their category.
This left the team with
an overall position of
134/207.
Murray Bridge was the
final race for this year. A
great effort throughout
the year from the 2019
Pedal Prix Team.
From the OSHC Hive….
Thank you to the families who have
booked their children into Vac Care to take advantage of the Early Bird discount. A reminder that we do need a signed booking and consent form from the parent as a compliant CWA.
All children attending this Vac Care and
from onwill be required to wear a hat for outdoor play. Please make sure that one is in their bag when they attend OSHC.
At present, children not attending any OSHC session within an 8
week period will have their enrolment ceased by the government. We are pleased to hear this week, that there is proposed legislation to push that out to 14 weeks which will then allow families who only attend Vac Care every 10 weeks, to retain their current enrolment at the service. So stay tuned!
Thank you to the stakeholders who have returned their
surveys. This was an opportunity to let us know what your thoughts are and an opportunity to let us know if there is a need to alter our opening/closing times or dates around the Christmas holidays. If you have any queries please see Sheryle or Helen.
WANTED! Spare clothes for our cupboard. If you have any
outgrown clothes that you would like to donate to us we would appreciate them. Thank you.
If you require childcare on this Friday for the Early Dismissal at
2.15pm, please contact OSHC staff to secure your place.

Term 3 Week 10 26th September 2019
17 students from Hahndorf Primary School recently participated in the Mt.
Lofty, Mini Volleyball 2019 Term 2 and 3 Indoor Season. The competition was
played over 13 rounds and held after school on Friday nights at the impressive
Mt. Lofty Community Sports Centre. The competition involved over 40 teams
from schools throughout the Adelaide Hills, and the divisions were as follows;
Year 6/7 boys, Year 6/7 girls, Year 4/5 boys and Year 4/5 girls. Teams could be
of mixed gender if necessary. The Hahndorf Primary School teams also trained
at school each Thursday at lunchtime, helping to develop their skills, confidence
and teamwork.
All 4 teams improved a lot throughout the season and should be really proud of their
efforts and achievements. Many of the students are keen to continue playing in the
Term 4 Beach Volleyball Competition.
At the end of the 13 Rounds the results were as follows:
The ‘Bokchoi Boys’ participated in the Year 6/7 boys division. The team (all Year
7’s), consisted of Fergus, Brad, Ryan, Fynn and Matilda (who joined in the middle of
the season after recovering from a soccer injury) and finished in 1st position. The
team then played in a Gold Medal play off match but unfortunately went down in a
close match to the Aldgate Legends. Despite being disappointed by the loss, the team
enjoyed an end of season celebration at Fasta Pasta.
The ‘Hahndorf Spikers’ participated in the Year 6/7 boys division. The team (all
Year 6’s), consisted of Alex P, Jessica, Keenan and Connor . At the end of the season
this team finished 9th out of 14 teams, a credible effort considering they were often
competing against more experienced Year 7 students.
The ‘Baby Sharks’ participated in the Year 4/5 boys division. The team consisted of Brett, Charlie, Angus and
Liam. At the end of the season this team finished 3 out of 6 teams. Apart from developing their volleyball skills
throughout the season, this team also developed their ability to work together and support each other.
The ‘Fluffy Ducks’ participated in the Year 4/5 girls division. The team consisted of Jemma, Alex K, Harriet and
Nylah. What this team lacked in experience, they certainly made up for in enthusiasm and teamwork. They
finished 11 out of 14 teams and were very focused and dedicated during our weekly training sessions.
A big thanks to all parents that supported the teams. Thanks also to Yolanda Kearton and Kelly Sickerdick for
helping with administration and supervising at our weekly training sessions. Volleyball is a very enjoyable team
sport and I would encourage anyone that hasn’t played it before to give it a go.

Term 3 Week 10 26th September 2019
The Preschool children have been very busy in their last two weeks of this term. Red Group children planted bean seeds in three different sets of conditions. One set in see-through bags was placed in a sunny window, another set was placed in a dark cupboard and the third set was planted in the garden. We have been observing them to see how the different conditions affect their growth. We also experimented with adding blue dye to the water in which we had some white lillies. After discussion we hypothesised – that the flowers would turn blue, and observed them over two days. We were right! The flowers and leaves started to turn blue. We have learned a Spring song and dance called Blue Wren and painted some different types of spring flowers. Children have worked together to create a fire station/house with waffle blocks where an electrician, a concrete worker, a plumber and builders (pretend of course) collaborated to create then enjoy their structure. It was hungry work so they had ice cream of various flavours at the “ice cream shop”. The Blue Group have been fascinated by our living creatures outside. We went for a nature walk around the school and we heard lots of different bird noises. We became fascinated by the life of a bird so we decided to make bird feeders as a group to hang around the school. We have also enjoyed dancing in the past two weeks of term, we have learnt the chicken dance and hokey pokey. We also loved making kites to fly and test in the wind!
This week children played on the big play equipment by the library, went on a tricky obstacle course over rocks, a wooden bridge and a cable and chain bridge, then went for a walk through Rosie’s Garden. We saw the bird and possum boxes and a bird’s nest. Red Group children saw a real possum in a gum tree.
We wish you all have a safe, happy, restful holiday and look forward to seeing you all back for our last term of preschool.
