  1. 1. Physical education is an important part of your childs school day. Not only does PE class reduce the risk of childhood obesity, it even improves their overall academic performance, reduces stress and anxiety, improves motor function, implements leadership, and strengthens relationships with their peers. Physical education classes are not just for reducing the risk of childhood obesity, it helps your child improve their academic performance, motor skills, reduced stress, implements leadership and strengthens relationships and cooperation with fellow students and staff.
  2. 2. Exercise and Mental Health It is no secret that activity plays a part in mental health. Problems such as anxiety, sleep apnea, irritability and sleep deprivation are linked to obesity and inactivity. When you exercise, your body releases stress reducing chemicals called endorphins, which triggers a positive feeling. By exercising, your child is able to reduce tension and anxiety. By reducing this anxiety and stress, your child will be able to focus on their other studies better, improving their performance and involvement in the classroom. Empathy and Leadership Activities and exercises during PE class are often group activities that involve the entire class. These social interactions influence children to develop skills such as empathy and leadership. Researchers from the University of Michigan did a study on middle school aged children regarding the amounts of leadership and empathy were present. It was found that students that were active at least 20 minutes per day on a weekly basis showed more empathy and leadership skills than the less inactive students in the same grade. This suggests that students who are more empathetic towards others are the ones that care about their own health, which leads to choosing healthier lifestyles later in life. The research also implies that when children are able to make positive differences in their own life, they become invested in making better choices.
  3. 3. Childhood Obesity According to the Centers for Disease control and prevention, child obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents within the last 30 years. Childhood obesity is more than likely to cause medical issues that contribute to cardiovascular disease such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Children and adolescents that are obese are more likely to be obese as adults, putting themselves at risk for type 2 diabetes, stroke, and even certain types of cancer.
