I am in shock, I feel sick to my stomach - what the HE double Hockey Sticks is wrong with our justice system?

One man dead, 3 others severely injured and the perpetrator?

Texting while driving and yet not guilty of dangerous driving causing death or the three counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm he faced.

All four motorcyclists were/are members of the Barrie Chapter of the Southern Cruisers Riding Club.

What is the point of putting a law in the books if it has no teeth? We have distracted driving laws that have NO TEETH.

She noted that even Rogers admitted he had been using his cellphone while driving that day, however the judge could not find beyond reasonable doubt that he was using it at the time of the crash.

Gosse said this was her first case involving an alleged texting while driving causing death.

“But sadly, it is not all that uncommon,” she said. End Quote

It is my firm hope that there will be an appeal.

The OCC - Ontario Confederation of Clubs does not appear to be on the rampage about this verdict, but from my personal experience with them -they appear to focus more on 1% issues than ALL rider’s rights issues.

Regardless I would have thought that they would be outraged and sitting on the steps of their provincial legislature asking for the judge’s decision to be reviewed or for a retrial.

I would have thought we’d see a statement or

a press release, but nothing anywhere that I could find.

We NEED a national riders rights organization - a watch dog - someone to protect our rights as citizens and human

beings.

Just because this happened in Ontario does not mean riders from other provinces can’t have an impact.

So - how can we, Joe Q Citizen have any impact on this particular injustice?

The more we flood the Attorney General’s office with letters of outrage - the more likely a review of the case will take place.

PLEASE - take 5 minutes and DO SOMETHING....

Distracted driving is an offence and according to a Ministry of Transport statement on their website: http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/safety/distracted-driving/index.shtmlThere is a ban on hand held cellular device use while driving in Ontario.

Would you please explain how using a hand held cellular device to read a text is not distracted driving, which is also dangerous driving?

Why was it is not considered Dangerous Driving causing death and causing bodily harm in this case?

If the person had been drinking it would be, would it not?

If the person had been stoned it would be would it not?

Why is this case any different?

What can be done to force an appeal?

BCCOM Update – March 4th & 11th 2013

Tracy Smith Breach of Probation Hearing

First off thanks to the 17 brave souls who attended, it was cold, most had only taken an hour off work to be there for the beginning which I was glad of as it got held over till Wednesday 9:30 am Surrey Courthouse Room 101. Spoke with Crown Council and it is one breach of probation (I have heard it was 2 but no), Miss Smith has been in custody for 11 days so far so by Wednesday I imagine it will end up as time served. Where it will get interesting is if Vision Quest will take her back, apparently the breach was over her not following house rules but nothing such as breaking curfew or drinking nor drugs.

It is too bad as such short notice does not end up with a good turn out but we will try our best to let everyone know. Please try to come out and show support for our fellow rider.

Meeting with Transportation Minister Polak:

I had an extremely positive meeting with Minister Polak, her Ministerial assistant Kiel Giddens, Assistant Deputy Minister Dave Duncan and Blair Lekstrom. Probably one of the best meetings I have had in my 22 years with BCCOM. On the table for discussion was Lane Filtering and Transferable Plates and it is my distinct feeling that the door is open on both or perhaps a better way to put it is that it is not shut.Legislation would have to be changed which is huge and I need to do some work in several areas. Nothing will happen before the election but I will be busy following some roads to further this effort.

In the discussion around Transferable Plates I think everyone was in agreement that it is the way to go for all vehicles but as we are smaller in numbers we would make the perfect test case. I believe Minister Polak has a great vision for making driving in BC better and perhaps moving it forward to be a better system in general.was Lane Filtering and Transferable Plates and it is my distinct feeling that the door is open on both or perhaps a better way to put it is that it is not shut. It is with great pleasure that I announce the first “Rider Down Memorial Service” Sunday May 5th at 11 am. It will be located at the Bonsor Cenotaph, corner of Imperial and Nelson in BurnabyThe B.C. Coalition of Motorcyclists along with the Canadian Army Vetrans (CAV) will be hosting this service to honor our friends, family and loved ones who have been lost while riding. The Padre from the CAV will be performing the service. It is also a salute to and a perfect way to bring in May is Motorcycle Awareness Month and the proclamation from government will be read. Please do your best to attend and let’s make this an event to rival the Toy Run! It will NOT be a parade but a destination with Jubilee Ave. being

The last few months have reaffirmed to me the fact that life does not get any less complicated as we navigate through it.

Circumstances have conspired to keep me

away from my weekly rambling but I hope they are behind me now. In fact, they have kept me away from riding and most things motorcycle.

My schedule even had me missing the Vancouver Motorcycle Show this year.

I guess the motorcycle gods weren’t happy so they fogged in the airport for the entire day. While waiting for another flight that never happened, low and behold the Show was a 3 minute walk from the Abbotsford Airport so I got to go after all.

This past Sunday, I was recreating my version of a ground hog raising his head looking for his shadow, except in my case I was looking to see if my ride was casting a shadow.

Great news - it was! Bad news, the one nice day, in fact the nicest day of the year so far that I wasn’t working, I WAS SICK. This of course added to my discomfiture.

I have been crazy busy at my job selling bath tub and shower renovations for Bath Fitter.

For those of you unfamiliar with Bath Fitter, an upcoming story will fill in some blanks.

In addition to plain old busy (who isn’t, right?) this year has proven to be a challenge – my phone died, my computer died and my car may be dying a slow death.

a pretty big wrench into things.

How did our parents survive in the old days without these essential tools of life?

All challenges aside, I am ready to get back on that horse, figuratively speaking and back on the iron horse literally.

And not a moment too soon as spring is around the corner.

There have been several riding days but work has so far got in the way.

I love my job but my passion has been repressed for too many months. Much like Johnny in the Shining, all work and no play makes me a very bad guy to be around. I need to be unleashed and my time is now.

For those of you not living on the West Coast riding your riding season is probably still a ways off.

An archeologist is the best husband any woman can have; the older she gets, the more interested he is in her.

With the snow falling heavier and the temperatures lighter, the beginning of March has most of us salivating over the prospect of getting the bike out of storage... some have even had

theirs on the road for a few hours this year!

Of course, we’re all reminded constantly that there’s gravel or sand on the roads, and that hidden patches of ice can be anywhere, and that’s all well and good.. be awake, be aware, be prepared to brake or maneuver unexpectedly.... but hold on.

Do you know.. actually KNOW, how far it takes to stop your bike on dry pavement, in good conditions?

You might be surprised at how many people grossly underestimate the space they need to come to a full stop from highway speed, or even city speed.

A good rule of thumb is that an average bike, ridden by someone capable and skilled, on smooth, dry pavement, will take roughly 120 feet (about the length of 2 semi trucks with single trailers) to stop.

Did that surprise you?

Remember, that’s only if the rider is skilled, and in testing the rider KNOWS what’s going to happen

and is mentally prepared for it.

Their response time is negligible, and the track and bike are prepared for the test in advance. Not very real world, in a way.

Your distance will almost certainly be longer, because you’re not going to be warned ahead of time in an emergency stop situation.. you might overapply or underapply the brakes, there might be debris (sand, gravel, oil) on the road, your bike’s brakes might not be in tip-top brand new condition, and you may be somewhat overloaded (touring/cruisers especially).

Have you ever actually (recently) TRIED a panic stop? Have you ever broken a rear tire loose in a fast stop situation, or worse yet, a front tire?

This skill definitely can (and almost certainly someday will) save your life, so practice it.

If you’re a cruiser or touring rider, chances are that in a panic situation you stomp too heavily on the back brake, sport bike riders have a tendency to lean on the front brake too hard... in a straight line both are recoverable situations, but how often do you brake in a straight line when in a panic situation?

You rarely do, is the truth. You swerve, you avoid cars, pedestrians, potholes, animals... you have to take a less than stable path.

On the tires, you can brake, you can maneuver, you can avoid dragging your body parts on the pavement... once you put that thing on it’s side, it’s 100% unpredictable and 100% out of your control! It’s not slowing down as quickly as it would under skilled braking, and it’s going in a straight line.. until it hits something.

Sometimes you have no warning that it’s going to happen, but making the conscious decision to put your machine on the ground like that is only really useful if you need to go under something.

Otherwise, you are far more likely to fare well if you keep it under control. Rubber side down IS the best way, without a doubt.

We are all told over and over that between 70% and 90% of your braking is accomplished by the front brakes... what many riders don’t realize or understand is that this is true because of weight transfer... when you apply the brakes, whether properly or not, the weight transfers from the back wheel to the front.. this is the syndrome that causes 4-wheeled vehicles to “nose dive”, and it’s what allows us to use that front brake so effectively on a motorcycle.

You need to make the most use of traction, apply the brakes to where the tires are nearly, but not quite, breaking loose. There’s no real, reliable warning sign of this, it’s purely experience, and the only way to experience it, is to practice it. You’re going to scare yourself a time or two.. and make sure someone is nearby, just in case, ok?

Find yourself a clean, dry parking lot, in good shape, or a VERY secluded back road where you can see for miles in both directions. Make sure you leave yourself plenty of room from your braking point marker (cone, or even just a backpack on the road).. and it’s probably as much as 3 times more than you might think, so allow LOTS.

Start slow, applying first the front brake to start the weight transfer, then on the back brake with a smooth, firm press.

You’ll feel the weight start to transfer, and you’ll need to back off of the rear brake a bit as it does.. meanwhile, your front tire is taking the weight, the contact patch is flattening and getting larger, and you can rely more heavily on it.

Rapid, violent application of the brakes does the obvious thing.. it breaks traction.

You need to be smooth, and to be smooth you need to be confident.. you’re most likely going to be in a high tension / panic situation, confidence in your machine and your skills will reduce the risk here.

Make sure your tires and your brakes are kept in tip top shape.. your life really will depend on it.

Start slow... maybe 30km/h, and keep track of your stopping distances.

When you’ve gotten up to “real speeds”, mark it on the road, where you stopped... and then turn around and look at where you started applying the brakes. LOCK that distance in your mind... this is the best you can do.

Most of the time, you’ll need to allow more space... knowing this stopping distance will allow you to instantly decide if you need to take other evasive maneuvers, or if you can safely stop.

If you load a passenger and thirty kg of gear on, it’s going to be longer... I ride a lot with a passenger, and I have actually loaded a backpack up with freeweights and practiced stopping that way... it’s rather shocking the difference it makes!It’s not luck that keeps us alive.. it’s skill. Mental and physical skills will save the day and keep you on the road, so take the time to work it out.

Hell, get some buddies together and work as a team, watch each other, look for things that might not be readily apparent, and always, if you can, take a “tune up ride” before heading out to enjoy the season.

Ride for Dad – Calgary

The Annual Motorcycle Ride For Dad ride is the culmination of events that raises funds for prostate cancer research and awareness. It is a mandate of The Ride that funds raised in an area are used within that area.

On Saturday June 15, 2013, at the Max Bell Arena, we will be hosting our 7th annual event. This will consist of a police escorted parade route, followed by a scenic poker route.

Goodie bags will be given to the first 500 riders to pre-register online or at the Friday evening pre-registration. At the end of the ride at Springbank Park For All Seasons, we will have a BBQ for all registered riders, live music, gift draws, the 50/50 draw, silent auction items, and more. This is an event for the whole family on 2 wheels or more...!

I may not be getting laid tonight, but I’m definitely banging my snooze button in the

morning.

Fort Saskatchewan Motorcycle Association is proud to announce that the Fort Saskatchewan Legion has been approached to host our Cancer Rides and has accepted. What that means is that we now have a location and the final planning can now begin.

Soon will have the details nailed down and be able to let everyone know. At this point we may only be able to do the poker ride, head shaves, show and shine, lunch and of course the raffle draw. We do not have a location for motorcycle games.

So all is not lost there will be a location for the event for some years to come. Thanks to the Fort Saskatchewan Legion.

FSMA is now meeting every week at the Ricky’s All Day Grill in Ft Saskatchewan Sunday’s 9:00 am. We use the back room and order off the menu for breakfast or just coffee. As usual when it is riding weather we will be leaving for our Sunday rides from the restaurant at about 10:30 am.

For those that do not know of FSMA we have been around for about 30 years. We are a group of riders from all sorts of backgrounds. There are no prerequisites to join just the joy of riding motorcycles. We don’t care what you ride.

FSMA puts on 2 events yearly our Cancer Ride and Raffle, where we raffle off a HD Sportster 883 first prize, $500.00 second

prize and $250.00 third prize. Our Toy Ride where we donate toys for Christmas and food drive for local food bank.

FSMA is a year long association we don’t just meet in the summer we meet all year long. So you get to know some great friends plan some trips with other members or just socialize. It’s a great group of people with a common passion riding motorcycles and giving back to the community through our Cancer Ride and Toy Ride.

During riding season we do Sunday rides for those that want to ride along, you don’t have to be a member to join on the ride but we hope that if you come out a few times that you will become a member.

Brave Captain Smith

One fine day, brave Captain Smith and his crew of sailors were sailing the ocean blue. Suddenly, on the horizon, there loomed a ship with a skull and crossbones raised on the mast. The crew was frantic, seeking refuge and asking the captain what to do.

Brave Captain Smith looked at the approaching ship for a moment and said, “Bring me my red shirt.” The call was taken up at once by a cabin boy. As soon as Captain Smith had the shirt in his possession, he ordered the man at the wheel to head straight for the pirate ship. In the ensuing fight, the pirate ship was all but destroyed.

The sailors were recounting their individual triumphs afterwards when someone asked Captain Smith why he had asked for his red shirt before the battle. He responded: “If I was wounded, I did not want your confidence to wane. This way, you would keep fighting no matter what happened to me.”The crew had a new found admiration for its captain, and they talked all night about his bravery. About a week later, there loomed on the horizon 10 pirate ships. Once again, the crew looked to its captain for leadership. Calmly, Captain Smith said, “Boys, bring me my brown pants!”

Big Hearts Charity Ride – July 20thRetro Cycle, in collaboration with a number of riding groups, and other business in Central Alberta, are happy to say that we will be hosting the Big Hearts Charity Ride for the Pediatrics & Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the Red Deer Regional Hospital.

We will have a great route planned, and I don’t mean the short rides that are in the city. Our route will be approximately 3 hours of riding, so you will definitely want to fill up and bring your gear for this one.

We will have a great set of prizes for Best hand, Worst hand, the “Retro” hand, longest distance ridden to come to the event, and more.

Other Sponsors include Gord’s Smoke Shop in Red Deer, at their NEW location, Alberta Motorcycle Training in Springbrook, Monkeytop in Rimbey, and Rose’s Front Room in Blackfalds. There are a couple more, I just can’t remember you right now, so please don’t get mad that I missed you. When I remember, Ill put you in here too!

This is a Rain or Shine event, and its a great cause for Kids that are having to deal with injuries and infections that they have no control over, so this is an event you won’t want to miss.

Registration is at 9:00, with the first group heading out at 10:00 sharp, so make sure you get here and get registered for the event.

PS: Just want to update you all. Costco has come on board as a major sponsor for the event, providing all the food for this great cause. Be sure to come in and enjoy as many burgers as you like on the event, as every cent from the BBQ is going directly to the Neonatal and Pediatrics Centre here in

Yamaha Motor Canada is pleased to announce the return of the popular ‘Win a Factory Ride’ award. One award will be given at each of the three biggest amateur motocross events in Canada. Last year’s big winners were Daniel McNaughton (WCAN), Dylan Wright (ECAN), Tanner Ward and Steven Anderson (TransCan).

Each won a ‘Factory Ride’ in addition to a $2500 parts credit! Bryan Hudgin, Yamaha’s Race Director commented, “We know racing is expensive, especially for the amateurs.

My adopted daughter, Sasha, will be studying at St Petersburg University for a year. So being the ‘cool dad’, I decided to ship her stuff, from her digs in Sweden where she had been working, and to take her out by motorcycle.

Of course, particularly in this part of the world, its always weather permitting. I frequently travel independently to Russia. I have since the 70s. I always begin by asking friends in St Petersburg, and/or Moscow, for an invitation, about six months in advance of the trip; then a visa from the Russian Embassy is available by post in about

two weeks.

I have ridden there seven times - twice via Sweden: the easiest route is by DFDS ferry to Gothenburg in Sweden and Silja Line ferry from Stockholm to Turku in Finland.

Another time, I rode from Hamburg to St Petersburg via Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia (seven hours wait at the border into Russia) and to St Petersburg, then on to Helsinki to catch a car ferry to Travemunde.

The border crossing into Finland was much better. No English car insurance is available for Lithuania or the Russian Federation, but third party is available at border crossings. I experienced no real problems - knowledge of the language helps a lot as Russian is spoken, if reluctantly, in the Baltic States. Take one Goldwing motorcycle, a Russian daughter, 500km of empty roads and endless vistas of forest, sea and sky and you have the perfect Nordic road trip, for a little extended detour prior to the start of Sasha’s classes.

clapperboard farmsteads, assorted summer houses with woodstacks piled high, granite escarpments, dense pine forests, sweeping meadows, green fields lined with regiments of lupins, and warning signs for moose. Then it dawns. Something is missing. Never mind the moose, where are the cars, trucks, any other vehicles?

It’s 11am on a Monday, nearing midsommar, a big Swedish holiday, and we are but 65km from Gothenburg, the second city of 600,000 inhabitants, in a big tourist area. The roads here in Bohuslän province aren’t post-apocalypse empty – two or three cars have passed in the opposite direction – but there have been no rivals in our lane for aeons. 8km, 10km, 12km. None. 14km, 16km. None. Then, on 18.8km, we spot a bus. It quickly turns off.

I live in London, a RCMP posting, I’m used to traffic. OK, I mean gridlock. But driving in Sweden is as effortless as rural France on Bastille day; as easy as the endless, eerily empty, south-west US highways during a gas shortage. In fact, it’s so empty I’m beginning to recall images of post-apocalyptic movie The Road, except the forests aren’t on fire and people aren’t eating each other. Sure, I visualize myself as a larger Viggo, but that’s another story for another counselling session.My daughter Sasha and I are here for 10 days, riding from Gothenburg towards the Norwegian border, hopping around the Bohuslän archipelago, before arcing down and around the coast to Malmö and Falsterbo for midsommar, where sensible Swedes let their blond hair down, cavort around a maypole, eat copious inglad sill (pickled herring), boiled eggs, new potatoes, and caviar from a tube, and get trashed while singing slightly rude tongue-twisters about farting Finns.

The night before we were in a Gothenburg hotel opposite Scandinavia’s biggest funfair but now, 20 minutes from town, we’re cruising along country roads, hopping between islands such as Tjörn and Orust, past rolling meadows and rocky inlets. And, it seems, past classic American cars. Buicks, Plymouths and a Ford Gran Torino parked outside

a kiosk. The kiosk owner says Swedish folk like their old American cars. He neglects to mention the classic car convention nearby.

We’d love to stay at Slussen Pensionat on Orust, a fabled bohemian band & breakfast joint, offering dinner, live music and room for about £100, not bad for pricey Sweden, especially given that famous folksters such as Peps Persson and Mikael Wiehe jammed here. However, we are destined for the tiny village of Lahälla – where friends are renovating an old farmhouse, slowly – for a BBQ, songs, wine and insect repellant – the area is known for ticks which burrow into your skin spreading Lyme disease, hence the sensible pre-bedtime chimp-like ritual of checking for their presence.

The Germans love Bohuslän, for the clean air,

open space and wildlife – so much so that they’re buying up summer houses. We haven’t seen any “D for Deutschland” car stickers, but for locals the Germans are easy to spot with their cartoon moose stickers. (Perhaps that’s what the sign meant: “Warning, Germans with cartoon moose stickers.”) A short hop north, resting at bayside cafes for fika – the traditional Swedish coffee, cake and chat – we board a ferry for the fishing port of Lysekil. It’s here we’re told of Sweden’s lesser known, sensibly observed rules, such as not letting your engine idle for more than a minute.

Thirty kilometres away lies Fjällbacka, a beautiful, increasingly number of villages of clapperboard fishermen’s huts and cottages, set beneath an imposing granite cliff and perched on a wide tranquil bay dotted with rounded skerries that float into the horizon like thought bubbles. It boasts the hotel and restaurant Bryggan which serves pickled herring on its jetty at sundown (10.45pm, Swedish time), bliss with a bottle of chilled chardonnay. Ingrid Bergman lived here – her statue adorns the promenade – but it’s set to be more famous as the setting for local girl Camilla Läckberg’s bestselling murder mysteries, soon to be filmed here.

On the ride south we listen to Mats Eriksson’s modern folky jazz on the CD player, interspersed with bouts of easy listening Swedish Dansbandsmusik on 93.8FM. (Think Herb Alpert on Prozac meets Cliff Richard, the 1970s and 1980s svenska bands sporting sideburns you could wipe your feet on.) The scenery doesn’t need a soundtrack, with valleys like mini-Yosemites, dotted with farmsteads, many with traditional wooden milk tables where farmers would leave urns at the gate.

Coastal campsites abound here, with full amenities and swim decks in sheltered bays. A two-bed cabin with en suite is about £50 per night. A tent costs less than three beers at the bar – about £15. Sasha says NO TENTS!Ah, Sweden and alcohol. What’s that joke again?

“Sven, you get the mortgage, I’ll pop to the bar.” OK, it’s pricey, at least £5 a pint in the cheapest pubs, plus it’s restricted – any takeaways over 3.5% proof must be bought in a monopoly state shop, the Systembolaget, a sort of East India Company selling booze; you have to be 20 and organised – and watch out, they often close early. We’ve stocked up on duty free, but a trip to the “systemet” is fun; it’s like a cross-Channel ferry duty-free, only huge. You should see the panicked queues near closing time. Perhaps the healthy eating, sensible Swedes make up for the lack of booze with sweets – they are everywhere you go; supermarkets devote whole aisles to all manner of pick’n’mix.

If buying alcohol seems tricky, the language seems impenetrable. I’m told I sound like an addled moose when speaking svenska. Still, you can have fun on the road pronouncing the signs – try saying Tvååker and Krapperup without crashing. There are many similarities in the languages, too. At lunch, in a restaurang ask for the lunchmeny, or at fika, try blåbärspaj (come on, it’s blueberry pie).

Riding south past the cities of Falkenberg and Halmstad in Halland county, the homes have changed, too, from clapperboard boxes to intricate tudor-beamed stone houses. Welcome to Skåne, southern Sweden. The hill at posh Båstad (pronounced borstad, please) demarcates the geography perfectly. Café Utsikten gives us a view over the long bathing hut-, gorse-lined sandy bay below, and the villas and yachts by the marina. It’s £15 for coffee and cakes; dear, but the blankets are warm. Blankets are offered free to customers, everywhere.

The next day we motor to Ängelholm, where we indulge in a bout of Kubb-throwing (the Swedish answer to skittles, but using sticks thrown at logs) in the garden before a boozy dinner with the in-laws (I think I bluffed it), then a night at the Gallerihyttstigen B&B and some bracing fun in the outdoor shower. Nearby in Kullaberg nature reserve is one of Sweden’s wackier attractions, Nimis, a colony of towers honed from 75 tonnes of driftwood, accessible only by foot through the

forest.

Soon we are on the island of Ven in the Öresund channel between the municipality of Landskrona and Denmark. Cars are banned for visitors so we park up and pluck a bike from Ven’s bike plantation – a field with 1,000 yellow cycles, everything from child bikes to tandems.

Further south sits Malmö, Sweden’s third city, unfairly derided as the poor cousin of Stockholm and Gothenburg. I’m told Malmö isn’t seen as Swedish, for its less than spotless streets. We liked it, especially the hip Bastard restaurant (pronounced bastard, it’s a joke!) on the pier for a nude sauna (women one side, men the other). Here I ditched my Irishness (and my trunks), and went native, sunbathing on the deck, in the nip, after a dip in the sea.

From here, we could ride to Copenhagen over the Öresund bridge (with its £30 toll). But we’re off to spend midsommar at Falsterbo, an upmarket colony of summer homes and villas at Sweden’s southern tip.

For more new potatoes, more dill and more silly songs and snaps-fuelled tongue-twisters and naughty children’s ditties about throwing cow dung. The Swedes, it seems, aren’t quite so sensible after all.

The effortless, 500km scenic odyssey should entice you to want to attempt the ultimate Swedish road trip, 2,100km from Malmö up to the barren, wild, untamed north and beyond the Arctic circle.

Sasha is not keen: “There’s nothing there. Nothing! For hours!” Exactly – even fewer cars.

For those of you who regularly read my articles you are not surprised that I’m a hands on kind of person.

That being said I know my limitations.

I recently had to hire electricians to wire in a new electrical service to

my house. It was a big job and one that I would eagerly attempt having pulled enough wire under the supervision of Journeymen Electricians that I’m confident I could do.

Today society runs on electricity but the prospect of being without power for an extended time was not acceptable to Mrs Monkey or me so I had to hire professionals.I was dumbfounded to get repeated calls asking how things work, why things were the way they were.

In the last hundred years electricity has gone from knob and tube, to single wire, to two wire, aluminum to copper and everything else. I don’t know what others had done in the house or why it had been done that way.

Frustrated, he phoned me to tell me that the lights in the dining room would not work. He had spent over an hour working on them and it was an impossible situation.

That night as I walked into the dining room I turned on the other three way switch to the dining room lights. To my surprise they came on. I tried the opposite light switch that he had spent an hour working on and he was right it didn’t work so I removed the switch and flipped the two wires.

Voila the lights work properly from both

switches. I took me thirty seconds to fix something he couldn’t understand, something that he was trained to understand, trained to troubleshoot, trained to repair, something that he has spent the last twenty years doing.

He is not the only tradesman I’ve found to be that way. Plumbers who could not install garden hose connections, Body men who couldn’t repair small dents or make simple patch panels.

I don’t consider myself to be old school or really that old but I fondly remember the days when you hired a professional they were able to do the work. If a customer wants a toilet installed in the middle of his living room it shouldn’t be a problem, it might not be easy but everything is possible if your wallet is thick enough. A faulty light switch should not be a stumbling block.

It was a can do attitude that built this country, helped to define this country. Hard working men and women, who worked with their hands, learned how things worked and understood why. They were problem solvers.

They built bridges where they said bridges could not be built, dammed rivers they said could never be tamed, installed motors into bicycles igniting a fire that burns in all of

us. We’ve become a disposable society, an instant gratification society. Why fix when we can throw it away and buy new. If you work in a trade be passionate about your trade, learn as much as you can and never stop believing you can do it.

Action Plan for this Week:We wait......we anticipate this week Premier Wall will make good on his statements, however, in the mean time continued communication is encouraged.

In anticipation that our 5000+ strong voice “may not be heard”, plans are underway for a “MASS DEMONSTRATION” at the Legislative Bldg. At this point however, we have every confidence our Premier is, as he stated, the Leader of “the kind of government that recognizes when adjustments are needed, that recognizes when maybe mistakes were made”. I always knew Bikers had that special bond when help is needed, there they are.

But because of SGI it’s become visible that out of 10,000 Registered bikes in Saskatchewan we have over 5,000 supporters here.

What other group comes together like that in a crisis? Dana, Richard, Don, and over 5,000 more people impress the hell outta me and I just wanna make sure you all know it.

When I watched the video “Stand by Me” all I could do is think of how we all stand by each other when the chips fall.

Dear Honourable John Gerretsen, Attorney General of Ontario, I am writing to you today as a motorcyclist in response to the ruling of Justice Cory Gilmore regarding the case of Michael Rogers, having killed a motorcyclist while distracted by texting and driving (his own admission). I am a 32 year old female rider, and I already know 4 people personally who have been killed by a driver doing just that. I am confused at how the courts could possibly let this man go free, especially with a death involved, let alone the 3 others, severely injured. There is a massive domino effect, and I sincerely hope that the courts don’t think that for a second Mr. Rogers has learned any sort of lesson. He’s killed a man due to negligence while operating a motor vehicle, injured 3 others, destroyed families and is now back in his car, probably phone in hand, texting his friends at how awesome his court date went.....unbelievable. I urge you, please, to re-examine this case. This ruling speaks volumes. Please also remember that new drivers, of which there are hundreds every single day, look to this and are now thinking its ok to text and drive because they’ll get away with it should anything happen. This also says that, despite all the safety courses motorcyclists take for defensive driving, that they’re wasting their time because should anything happen, the Justice System WILL fail them. It has been proven. This is devastating on so many levels. Again, please re-examine this case. This is a

I agree that this can be a major issue, but do have a leg question..... how would you handle it if I had everyone in the office vote? Since they are all on a local network, the IP that you would see would be the same and yet it would be coming from many different people. There is always going to be issues and to resolve these is a major task.

BDB’s reply: Anonymous - we deal with that issue by calling the person who is voting or whose bike it is. If there are several people in the same office on the same IP we then determine how many people are in the office who have the ability/desire to vote, what their email addresses are and then we monitor the IP to ensure no more than that number come in each day. It is challenging but we have, for the most part overcome. End

My 2 bits worthThings in my world always seem to be a roller coaster ride, just about the time I start being able to have a little me time, to work 12 hours a day instead of 16 - the wheels fall off the bus and it always seems to happen March/April.

Darryl who has been laying out our paper for the better part of a year and a half finds himself with a plate that is too full. He runs a newspaper in Montana and just recently got a big contract writing about the olifield and since ours is just a small paying job compared to his others, he made the decision to sever ties. I wish him well.

Good news for him and how his business has grown, but it comes at a bad time for me as I am working on ad sales and phone book layout for our 2013 Rider Friendly/ Motorcycle Community Directory.

Ah well - it will all get done, a little late perhaps... but in the mean time, I am cleaning up all of the little jobs and obligations I had taken on - getting them finished and then work hard at saying NO for a while.

I find it hard to say no to people. I am a compulsive helper, and often to my own detriment. In spite of my background I have always managed to believe that people are inherently good - no matter that right from a young age there were those who taught me that liars, users and hate filled people exist in this world.

I am getting better at not taking things personally and at allowing for the uncertainty of life and not

being so critical - it’s been a learning curve!It appears to me that I am being given a lot of lessons in uncertainty...

March is already a bad month for me emotionally. My grandfather, father, brother , a cousin and an auntie - none of whom are with us anymore, all have their birthdays in March and no matter how hard I try, I end up with eyes that well up and a lump in my throat every time their day comes along. I miss them. Inspite of it all, I miss them.

William Perry, one of our columnists passed away at a rather young age from prostate cancer just a short time ago, and now we now get the news that Lisa, another of our columnists and one of William’s many daughters, also has cancer. Lisa has been given a very short time with us. She is 30, mom to an adopted daughter and freshly divorced from her same sex spouse.The Perry family has had it’s fair share of loss to deal with.

Right on the heals of that news I got an e-mail form Robert of the Alberta Lone Wolves that Loopy from Calgary has also been given a similar diagnosis.

Loopy has a final wish and that is to take part in a really large ride - 1,000 bikes or more - while he is alive to see it, participate in it and cherish it.

I will fill you in on the details of what the Lone Wolves are doing for our brother Loopy as Robert gets the information to me.

It’s going to be a challenging time in my world so if you are so inclined I would ask you to say a prayer for me.

Ask for strength and courage to face the losses I know are coming, the ones that will happen unexpectedly and ask for some help for me with my business - I never want to resent my work - so I need help to get balance back in my life sooner than later.

I am once again looking for a layout person, one who is well versed in Adobe InDesign,

understands working in the cloud and is self motivated and understands deadlines.

The right person will be a strong communicator and flexible.

Now I want to address the issue of a national rights organization again.

Texting and driving is an illegal act that is punishable by law in pretty much every province and territory in Canada.

As you saw on the front page of the paper, the first case involving texting and dangerous driving went to court in Ontario and the driver, a self admitted texter got off with no jail time. It set a precedent that must be appealed.

Then there is the case of Tracy Dawn Smith, a repeated offender who killed a rider on Vancouver Island - her 1 day sentence is being appealed.

You and I are vulnerable road users. We share the road with people who have no respect and no regard for others when they are hurtling their 4,000 lb. plus weapon down the road, scolding the kids, talking on their phones, texting - they are doing everything but the job of driving of being aware. Even professional truck drivers are texting.

It does not matter what province or territory you live in - THIS AFFECTS YOU.

Motorcyclist, driver, pedestrian - it affects all of us, just in the way drinking and driving does.

It leaves a trail of destruction behind and it alters families forever.

I hear more whining and snivelling about the pot holes, cracks, debris and other road conditions than I do about inattentive/distracted drivers.

We choose to ride - we choose to face these challenges - the roads, mother nature, our fellow man - but do these people have the right to put us at higher than normal risk by drinking and driving, texting and driving? NO.

In both of the cases I mention above, the drivers were driving luxury vehicles, both cases ended up with a motorcyclist dead, in both cases the evidence appears to prove they were guilty and yet there is no united mass public outcry for stiffer sentencing or mandatory sentencing. Why?

Where is the riding community in the other parts of Canada? Is Saskatchewan really and truly the only province in Canada that can rally the troops?

B.C.C.O.M. has done their best to rally the troops in BC and has had riders at every hearing through out the case on the Island, but in Ontario - nothing, the OCC has not made so much as a whimper about it.

Why is it riders aren’t screaming out more about these kinds of deaths?

Personally I think because no one is taking the lead on a national basis. Leadership has made the difference between BC and Ontario with regards to any kind of public showing of support and letter writing. B.C.C.O.M. has shown leadership and gotten results, so has Saskatchewan.

99% of the population believe that they are too busy to volunteer or put time in to work with or for a non profit organization and it’s cause. Bikers raise so much money for charities - why are we not riding for our own? WhAs much as I would love to work on this cause, I can not: not unless I find someone to buy the paper. I would be in a conflict of interest

and frankly - I don’t want to sell the paper in spite of the challenges with learning to run one. Technology changes so fast that you are constantly learning.

No, I will be the biggest supporter and volunteer though.I can provided tons of research materials for stats on traffic deaths - the right researcher could look through the archives we have compiled on crashes that riders have been in and find out a ton of information. Check out the Rider Down Section on our web site. Use the search function to narrow it down by province.

You see there is a reason to have a national repository of research material...you come across an article we don’t have, submit it to the web site.The more datat we have, the better.

We need to compare the sentences of car vs. car drunk driving and texting cases etc to see if the fines and sentences fit the “crime” consistently there or if it is only in cases where riders die that they do not.

We need a watch dog committee - but who and where... if you have any ideas, if you know some one, talk to them, share the information - please people, we can’t let our community be decimated this way.

I am frustrated - somewhere, in 600,000 plus people, there has to be someone with the will and the ability to organize a national rider’s rights organization that has some teeth, that can rally the troops, that can motivate people out of their complacency.

Earlier in this editorial I told you about the lives of three people - lives that are being cut short by cancer...or have been.

They are the lucky ones by compared to the families whose lives have been ripped apart because of someone else’s selfish thinking and actions.

How do I think you can be lucky in death?

At least William got to say good bye and mend fences, Lisa and Loopy will also have that chance, but Jana Mahenthiran, and Christopher Sprekker - they didn’t have that chance.

Folks, I know this is going to come off a little bit one sided, but sometimes the facts just speak for themselves once they are presented accurately.

In the coming months you are going to hear me weigh in with some very definite opinions in regards to certain aspects of the Service Dog world and in particular as it pertains to Psychiatric Service Dogs. (PSD”s) or “Me Girl”... Pretty heavy duty label... not “ Me Girl”, her title, her job, the work that she does, the service that she provides.

So many people who see my girl working in public think that her complacent docile manner is unbelievable. She is pretty much unfazed by just about everything. What people do not understand is that all those well trained behaviours, she has been trained to over ride those when I need help. The strange part was I knew I needed the help, I just didn’t know when.

Cryptic enough? I like many PTSD sufferers have disassociative flashbacks. Physically here, mentally there. The there for each of us is different. It is part of what makes up our own personal hell. The hard part was not knowing

how long there was, how long had I gapped out of reality.

The worst part is the “re-entry burns:”. The moment when you realize you have been gone, and you are not quite sure what happened while you were gone. If you do not think that is some truly uncomfortable real estate, well I regret to inform you have no idea just how disconcerting that feeling is. Too be frankly honest with you, I hope you never do. You see this stuff is the kind of stuff you don’t wish on anybody. Unfortunately, there will be others. It is the nature of the world. Until we can stop the insanity it will perpetuate the personal insanity of those who have to deal with real ugly things. Ethnic Cleansing, Terrorism, Genocide, Gendercide, Starvation, Exploitation and the fall out from serious disasters do not make a pretty list. The list accurately reflects many of the tasks that our brave men and women face. Peace Keepers, Peace Makers and everything in between. Canada, world renowned as Peace Keepers. Compassion a hall mark of our reputation wherever Canadians go and serve with the Maple Leaf on their shoulder. These things leave marks, sometimes worse for some than others, some absolutely debilitating,

So what does all the above and my girl have to do with each other? Simple... she has been trained in Intelligent Disobedient Interruptive Behaviour to aid me with dissociative flashbacks by in which her tactile stimulation mediates sensory re-orientation to where I am and what I am doing. When she executes her command override and gets in her goofy “Get with Me” mode, she knows I am on the way to bouncing a reality check and she heads me off at the pass.

So what is that worth? Imagine after years of hell, a day free of the worst of the symptoms. What a day, then another, and another. Days

that would not have been like that if Thai had not done what she had been trained to do. For me that is priceless, and everything else she does . and trust me, you will come to know how long the list is, comes along with me everywhere, she is with me 24-7-365. You see my problems are with me day and night and I need a solution that is there helping me out those exact same hours.

My girl may not be a licensed therapist, but she listens when I need her to be, You see next Wednesday at 2 pm I may not feel like talking. I May actually be having a good moment and truly do not wish to mess it up by swimming in the cesspool. So many times when I am out there walking and talking to her, I just arrive at a point where my angry of the moment disappears.

So in the coming months as we run up to the kick off of the Long Walk to Sanity, I want you to consider the PTSD Service Dog issue from the other side of the leash. In this case, the veteran, who is to become the handler, team member and in time, will learn to trust again. Think about their needs. The dogs that PTSD veterans have are not glorified pets with access to cool places. The certified assistance dogs from qualified schools are doing some amazing things for veterans suffering from serious issues with mental health. Is a prescription of Keeping Calm and Walking the Dog so outrageous. Hardly, when you consider the other end of the leash.

The following revised history of this veteran’s claims with Veterans Affairs is due solely to both the exceptional and outstanding “temerity” of Canadian Senator T. Banks, along with his persistent patience with this veteran. All of which prompts the belated expression of this veteran’s gratitude for such a diligent Senator. Thank you very much Senator T. Banks.

My name is Brian C. Bradley. I am a Veteran of the Canadian Forces. In 1966 I completed my army reserve basic training. In 1989 I completed my army reserve officer training, and began nearly five years of service in the Canadian Navy training as a Combat Systems Engineer (CSE, or 044A in Canadian military classifications). This same ‘five years of service’ began with basic officer training at Chilliwack, B.C., continued with second-language training at St. Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, and a year in Esquimalt, followed by just under three years of service in Halifax, NS. While training in Esquimalt, I was billeted to the HMCS Qu’Apelle, where I suffered a fall in the shower onboard that warship, injuring my spinal cord at three levels. Because the accident occurred while the HMCS Qu’Appelle was away from her home port, I was confined to my rack, and provided with painkillers until returning to Esquimalt five days later. On arriving there, I was rushed by ambulance to the base hospital. Other than being supplied with additional pain killers and 3 or 4 brief sessions of physiotherapy, my real injuries were not treated at that base hospital, nor at the base hospital in Halifax, where I was sent about two months later as part of the next phase of training. Upon release from the Canadian Navy in 1993 I was

assessed by a civilian general practitioner in Lower Sackville, NS, who immediately identified a C5/C6 radiculopathy (upper spinal cord condition), along with indications of other potential spinal cord level involvement, that had resulted from the accident onboard the HMCS Qu’Appelle. This same GP initially referred me for assessment to a diagnostic service in Halifax (i.e., spinal cord MRI), an orthopaedic surgeon, and an internal medicine specialist. All of these physicians agreed that the three levels of spinal cord injuries (i.e., C5/C6; T11/T12 & L2/L3) were most likely the result of the accident that had occurred while I was serving onboard HMCS Qu’Appelle.

In March 1996 I applied to the Veterans’ Review and Appeal Board (VRAB; a division of Veterans Affairs) for a disability pension. On three separate occasions within the first year of application (refer to Table ‘A’ on next page) the VRAB ruled against my application for a disability pension. I then obtained a ruling from the Trial Division of the Federal Court (Fed. Ct.) that the matter be referred back to a differently-constituted panel of the VRAB board (Fed. Ct. case T-157-98). In the next year, the allegedly differently-constituted VRAB panel ruled twice more against my claim. The matter was once again brought before the Trial Division which ruled that the matter be referred back to a differently-constituted panel and awarded me costs (Fed. Ct. case T-2137-99). Because this next allegedly differently-constituted VRAB panel failed to provide a decision within the next year, I filed a motion of Contempt of Court with the Trial Division. While the Trial Division (i.e., the Hon. Mr. Justice Martineau) would not grant this motion by citing the VRAB in contempt, it did again award me costs, even though none were requested, and supplied a step-by-step procedure to obtain justice in my case. With no legal training, I attempted to bring the VRAB before the Trial Division again, after being once again denied a disability pension by the VRAB’s next (and sixth) decision. I lost this

decision despite having provided professional testimony from a neurosurgeon, an orthopaedic surgeon and a general practitioner with more than 35 years of experience.

None of these submissions by physicians were contradicted by testimony from similar professionals on behalf of the VRAB, yet the Trial Division of the Fed. Ct. ruled against my claims. I was encouraged to re-approach the Trial Division based upon the experience of a lady who won her case in the Appeal Division in Ontario using my first two cases (i.e., T-157-98 & T-2137-99) as precedents. To render such a re-approach at such a late stage in the events, I was encouraged to concentrate on my


lower back injuries .... thereby, allegedly attesting to settlement for the upper back injuries .... with neither of these settlements ever occurring! Not more than four years ago, The Trial Division ruled again in my favour (T-401-05) and referred the matter back again to a differently-constituted panel of the VRAB board. That same board ruled on four more separate occasions against my application for a disability pension, forcing the matter back to the Trial Division for ultimate resolution (T-617-09). The VRAB fully exhausted the total number of decisions to which they were entitled in my application, recognizing that an award to me of a disability pension would mean financial ruin and subsequent political suicide for the government ‘in charge’ at the time of such a decision, given the tens of thousands of other veterans who remained deprived of such benefits. The Hon. Mr. Justice Phelan (T-617-09) decided: “THIS COURT’S JUDGMENT is that the application for judicial review is granted and the Appeal Board’s decision is quashed.” Unfortunately, such a ruling does nothing more than refer the same matter back to the Respondent (e.g., Veterans’ Affairs), thus prolonging the history of my claims and thereby moving the VA’s actions from the ridiculous to the sublime. While Canadian governments over the past 80+ years have continued to disregard their legislated obligations to veterans of the CF and Mounted Police, how do you think these same governments are treating(?) the remainder of Canadian citizens?

On top of all of this, I have had to represent myself in the Trial Division of the Fed. Ct. on several separate occasions with at least 6 of these applying to my claims with the VRAB [refer to case numbers: T-157-98, Bradley v. Canada (Attorney General), 1999 CanLII 7476 (F.C.)

In all of these decisions (including the latter two), the Hon. Justices supported my claims and rejected the VRAB’s decisions. The greater weight of factual evidence by specialists in the fields of medicine applicable to my spinal cord injuries supported my claims, as did the greater majority of the above-listed decisions. Who but a politician who allegedly represents his electorate but didn’t see ‘adequate votes’ in seriously supporting this applicant’s claims, would ignore these facts and not attempt to ensure this applicant receive something resembling the actual service of justice .... not to mention the adherence to legislated laws by a Fed. government dept. (i.e., VRAB)? The last decision of the VRAB (dated February 27, 2013) continued to deny this veteran of his claims for a disability pension.

That’s the quote that started the Ride For Dad. Uttered one day to Garry Janz, that single sentence serves as inspiration for the thousands of people across Canada who raise money for prostate cancer awareness and research through annual local rides.

What started out as a simple motorcycle ride in Ottawa raising just over $20,000 grew into a national phenomenon raising more than 10 million!

From its humble beginnings, the Ride For Dad has grown to more than 30 motorcycle, ATV, snowmobile and watercraft rides across Canada. Today, more than 100,000 men, women and children have been involved, raising more than 10 million dollars to help fight prostate cancer – the most commonly diagnosed men’s cancer in Canada.

Those who have had the fortune--or misfortune--to disassemble the transmission and drive system of their bike have generally been amazed—or dismayed—at the sequence of parts required to get power from the engine to the rear wheel. Motorcycle mechanics were developed long before Harley-Davidson

or Indian came on the scene. Centuries before motorcycles were even conceived, complex gear drives were turning in mills.

Popular with motorcyclists and “foodies,” the Charlevoix region of Quebec is special for many reasons. The village of Baie-Saint-Paul is located about an hour (85km/53mi) east of Quebec City and can be so packed with bikes on a sunny weekend to appear as if an impromptu rally is taking place. These riders have come to ride the region’s scenic roads and to enjoy its famous gastronomy.

Within a radius of 18 kilometers (11 miles) of downtown Baie-Saint-Paul are four early 19th century gristmills that still grind the locally grown organic wheat into flour used by artisan bakers.

Each mill has a rich history where millwrights explain the process of grinding flour to visitors. For me, these mills also offer a unique opportunity to present the very fundamentals of mechanics.Since the Middle Ages in Europe, every town required a mill in which to grind grain into flour to produce the staple of life: bread. The same was true when permanent settlements were established in North America.

The first gristmill in the New World was built in 1607, in Acadia (Annapolis Royal, NS). In 1627, Cardinal Richelieu inaugurated the Seignurial System, a semi-feudal system of land distribution, in New France. These large estates were laid out

along the St. Lawrence River and in the center of each were a church and a gristmill. Since a gristmill was needed for every 40 to 50 families, it can be reasonably assumed that there were mechanics to build and maintain them. In fact, every prosperous village in Canada and the United States maintained at least one gristmill until the advent of railroads offered a means of economical transportation for grain and flour.

The development of inexpensive cast steel suitable for tool making in the late 1880s occurred at the same time that aluminum became readily available and affordable. The introduction of De Dion-Bouton internal combustion engine in 1896 provided a lightweight power source for bicycles and gave birth to a decade of frenzied development of motorcycle designs.

However, the method of transferring power from the engine to the rear wheel was, and still remains, essentially identical to that of a gristmill.The sluice gate is opened and water rushes into the mill, spilling over the giant waterwheel. Once the brake is disengaged, the weight of falling water begins to turn the waterwheel and, with groans and tremors, the massive two-story high “engine” comes to life and builds up speed. It’s

an awesome spectacle to watch.

Every gristmill was custom built for the site on which it sits, but the principals were the same for each and every one of them. A source of motive power—preferably controlled and applied at a constant rate—caused a series (train) of gears to increase in speed to rotate a grindstone at about 120 rpm.

Auxiliary to this primary drive where others operated by drive belts and pulleys. Depending upon the ratio of one belt drum to another, the belt system could simultaneous support various other systems and machinery within the mill that operated at different speeds.

Standing in a mill and watching the shafts rotate, listening to the whine of rapidly traveling heavy drive belts, and feeling the vibration as one gear tooth engages with the next is much the same as if you were trapped inside your motorcycle engine—without the messy oil to muck you up. It’s quite easy to see where modern camshaft belts originated, complete with rollers and belt tensioners. Simple gear clutches aren’t much different from those used on early motorcycles

that had only two gear speeds. Beveled gears changed the direction of shaft rotation, as they still do in shaft-drive bikes like BMW. On some vintage models, auxiliary belts—or chains— in the engine run the oil and/or water pump.

Ignoring chronology, the first mill to visit is the Rémy (Moulin Rémy) just north of Baie-St-Paul on Route 138. Built in 1826 it is the largest of the four and operated as a flourmill until 1950 and then produced animal feed until sometime in the 1980s. The original gearing disappeared but restoration by a local land trust began restoration in 1997 and once again commenced grinding wheat in 2007. A 24-foot diameter waterwheel was built, the gearing authentically reconstructed, and too for the grain elevators, belt drives, and bolter that sifts the flour.

Cast-steel replaces cast-iron, synthetic fiber is used instead of leather for belts, ball-bearing bushings and steel shafts stand in for lesser materials used in the 19th century. Wood is still used for teeth on gears and pinions; for the main and drive shafts; belt pulleys; and stanchions. The Rémy Bakery (Boulangerie la Rémy) uses the flour ground in the mill to create breads, pies, and even pizza in magnificent wood-fired, brick

ovens. The mill is essentially a working museum, an “economuseum,” while the bakery is a retail business.

The next mill to visit is 18km (11mi) east of Baie-St-Paul in the village of Les Éboulements along Route 362, one of the top ten scenic roads in Canada. Built in 1790, this is the best surviving seigneurial mill in Canada. In 1962 it was acquired by Canadian Heritage of Quebec and restored. This mill is so authentic than even the miller is a direct descendant of its builder.

The Seignurial—or Banal—Mill is built on a cliff and although the approach is on the level of the work floor this structure is five stories tall. Only one grindstone is now in use, but three were originally operated.

Other essential equipment—a lathe, blade sharpener, and hoists—are operated by auxiliary belts, as are the grain elevators (belts to which small scoops are attached to carry flour) and the

The final stop is a pair of mills located on Îsle-aux-Coudres (Hazelnut Island). The first was built on the Red River in 1825.

From the standpoint of craftsmanship and efficiency this mill stands out from the ordinary. Yet it suffered the fate of a four-year drought and his son built a windmill on the other side of the brook in 1836. It’s the only place in the world where both a wind- and water-powered gristmill exists on the same site.

To get to this pair of mills requires turning right out of the driveway of the Seignurial Mill and almost immediately turning right again onto Chemin du Port (Port Road). Dramatically descending to the St. Lawrence River on grades that reach 18% you’re presented with stunning views of the island and the sweep of the broad river from the Laurentians to the Appalachian Mountains. The ferry crossing from the village of St.-Joseph-de-la-Rive to the island is free and presents magnificent views of the Charlevoix coastline. You might even spy a white Beluga whale or watch a ocean

freighter en route to Montreal during the 15 minute crossing.

At the Flour Milling Economusuem you’ll discover an interpretive center in the miller’s house and guides in period costume. Once again the layout of the mill follows set rules of function and mechanics, but the design is customized for both the physical site and volume of wheat that was, at that time, grown on the island. This one is extremely efficient with the bolter (sifter) next to the grindstones and the adjustment for the

working gap between stones positioned between them. Obviously, having seen one mill doesn’t mean that you’ve seen them all!

The windmill is the last “tower mill” built in Quebec. There had been others on the island since the first was built in 1727, and this one utilized stones that once were part of it. One stone in the lower wall is even inscribed 1678. Having seen three mills, you can’t help but notice

that the layout is restrictive and how much extra labor would have been required to handle the sacks of grain.

The motive power originates with wind at the top of the structure and so the drive system is essentially reversed, although simpler than with water-powered mills. Another key factor to be considered is that the quality of flour is dependent on the consistency and speed of the revolving grindstone (the bottom stone is always fixed in position)—and wind speed is rarely constant.

This windmill was outdated even at the time it was built. It’s a throwback to the Medieval Period and perhaps the only one that has survived intact into the modern era, although it was restored in 2012.Now that you’ve had the opportunity to witness the mechanical “engines” that evolved into motorcycles you might appreciate the longhistorical lineage of your bike.

At the very least you’ve been entertained. Although mills and motorcycles both make wheels turn, they have to remain and you are free to travel on the scenic roads of the Charlevoix.

Police officers come in all shapes and sizes—and sexual orientations. Might seem surprising for a woman to be openly gay and wear a uniform, but the RCMP doesn’t discriminate. I’m the youngest of six, and grew up in a police family,

which I am now the forth generation.

You make a lot of friends in policing. With a push of a button you have fellow officers that will back you up if you need help. It doesn’t matter what sexuality you are, we’re all cops and when you come to work we all treat each other with respect and as brothers and sisters. There are more important things to focus on. No one really cares who you go home to, nor should they.

I support Quebec’s Anti-Homophobia campaign.

The campaign’s success lies in the strength of the statements made by those who are bold enough to talk about the homophobia that exists in our communities today.

By standing together against Homophobia is a very important step in changing attitudes amongst Canadians and, to create a culture where people can be open about their sexual orientation for the good of their health and overall wellbeing.

Thank you to everyone who back the campaign and that they are also taking a stand against homophobia.

The purpose is to honor the Canadians that served with the U.S. Military during the Vietnam War. In 1995 the dream of three men realized fruition. Those men were Ed Johnson, Ric Gidner and Chris Reynolds and their dream was a memorial honoring the Canadians that paid the ultimate price, volunteering to serve with American troops in Vietnam.

The dream originated in the imagination of Johnson and Gidner with their heartfelt admiration

for the Canadians that sacrificed their lives and became the driving force to honor them. Ed was

also a Vietnam Veteran and served in the US Army with the 2nd 47th Mechanized Infantry 9th

Division. Ric served with the United States Marine Corps. The memorial rests in Windsor,

ON called the Canadian Vietnam Veterans Memorial, but is affectionately referred to as “The

North Wall. More ride details to follow.

Irish Fire Insurance

A man and his wife moved back home to Cork from London. The wife had a wooden leg and to insure it in Britain was £2000 a year!

When they arrived in Cork, they went to an Insurance agency to see how much it would cost to insure the wooden leg.

The agent looked it up on the computer and said to the couple, £39. The husband was shocked and asked why it was so cheap in Ireland to insure, because it cost him £2000 in England!

In my own make-a-wish-ish event, I had the perfect day. After receiving bad medical news earlier in the week, and deciding to take whatever treatment is available, no question remained to take that ride with my dad’s club buddies - sooner, because later was definitely not an option. Soon I would likely feel ill from the treatment, and having images of riding a motorcycle when I close my eyes, seemed like a nice thing.

I wasn’t sure how to share my medical news and financial dilemma with them. Covering medical bills is a scary prospect with or without health insurance, especially when I don’t live in Northern Ireland regularly. Sure, thanks to my parents, I do have dual citizenship, however fundraising for cancer treatments, an expensive treatments or simply to help with things like loans and

groceries was going to be a slog, and then once I’m in the hospital, my wife Kim is responsible. As an American, Kim can’t find employment. Fortunately, she is taking over my share of my business ventures. Like my dad, although not as organized or prepared, I don’t want friends and family to needlessly worry.

We may live in the digital age, but many of us still seek more spiritual solace to help us cope with life’s challenges. So it was a pleasant shock to find out that a rather large scary biker could actually to see what the rest of us couldn’t.

Not only did the big scary outlaw biker consult many alternative practitioners to offer me up

options to cope with my challenges, he also comforted me. You see, like so many others, I’ve struggled with debt, loneliness, and bereavement.

When I felt so depressed that I could barely move, I, with some help, summoned a white witch to my house to clear it of demons. Although I am Catholic, and believe in life after death, and demon spirits, I’m still in shock over my medical reality, so at this point I’m clutching at anything.

The woman (white witch) claimed the house was occupied by spirits. Although I was sceptical, later on, I listened back to the tape she had made as she walked through the farm house, burning

sage. I heard a definite sinister hissing that I hadn’t noticed at the time. I listened to it again; as I did so, a door opened next to me. It was very unnerving and profound, all at the same time.

Years ago during my Goth phase, and during a rough patch, a spiritual healer suggested the notion of guardian angels. She told me I have two, but that I never listen to their advice (when I was about to move to the United States, I would wake in the middle of the night, convinced it was a mistake – I should have listened to my ‘instincts’, which the healer said is the voice of my angels).

Now as far as meeting my wife, Kim, and adopting our daughter Lauren, the American portion of my life hasn’t all been doom, but there were events that constituted a mistake.

I later saw a psychic, recommended by a friend who said she never makes a move without consulting her first. This woman (psychic) said I would one day live surrounded by trees, some sort of animal sanctuary; both predictions came true - the farm. She also told me something about myself that no one could have possibly known.

And so, as when Lauren, Kaylee, my dad and I boarded a plane to Ireland little did I know that it would be a one-way trip for my dad, and as it would have it, myself, because I ain’t leaving now.

Back to the white witch (my new best friend), who claims to have been able to see angels from a young age. I am open-minded, wounded, but again, clutching at anything.

My friend Nick, who was so handsome and clever (I was always quite scared of him), died earlier this year and as he was lowered into the ground in a bleak, muddy cemetery near the A57, I thought, ‘This is it. There is nothing else.’

I understand the need to believe in something higher than us, and I accept that in times of trouble, we are susceptible to suggestion…still. After my dad died, my sister Adelle was convinced that she saw him downstairs, not gaunt and suffering from cancer, but smart and

handsome in his RCMP uniform.

But if anyone could convince me that there is more to life than a slow crawl to the grave, it was the white witch.

When club members arrived at the farm, Phillip, aka ‘Werewolf’, who is hairy, 58 and has four children (the eldest of whom is 33), comes to the door first to greet me. He is six foot eight inches tall, some three hundred and eighty pounds, but has the most incredible eyes: bright blue and immensely kind.

He says that I have a glow, an aura. “Your aura is a bright light, whereas with some people it’s soft. You’ve got to believe in yourself again. I know there is great sadness in you, but, child, you can do this.”

‘Where the hell did that come from’, I thought.

This, from the same guy I’m told, grabbed two men by the scruffs, and at once through both through a window.

He also said he sees my guardian angel. “He opened up twice while you were standing there, each time for just more than a second, and you have another angel with a female appearance; she’s beautiful.” Needless to say, this was something I seldom


see, with angels.

Werewolf continued, “Your guardian is extremely beautiful and looks strong. She’s working hard with you.”

‘Are they trying to tell me anything?’, I asked. “He, the other one, says you haven’t made as many bad choices as you believe you have.”

How do I know it is an angel telling me what to do, and not just fear? How do I know that this angel, of a different sort, isn’t just yanking my chain.

“He knows there are times in your life when you made the wrong decisions and times you made the right ones. It’s kind of through trial,” he said.

‘Shut Up!’, I thought. Now I need air.

As we rode, I was trying to process what Werewolf had said. One of the reasons I don’t believe in guardian angels is that people are inherently evil and most lie. Cynical I know.

We stopped for a pee break and beverage. As I stepped out of the WC, Werewolf was right there, like the wall he is. “The angels are guiding you, helping to make this life as easy as possible.

But they can’t overstep the boundaries of free will…yours.”

‘WTF’, I thought. I could he have…Werewolf, I mean Phillip, grew up in Dublin, the only child of a bicycle repairer. Unable to read, he was considered to have learning difficulties by his teachers and parents.

‘Did you tell your parents you could see angels?”, I asked him.

“No, the angels told me I should keep it a secret. Because if I had said to my mum, “There’s an angel beside you”, I would have been put into an institution.”

He recounts how an angel told him at the age of ten that he was going to meet his future wife, Fuamnach; that he would fall ill, and his wife would have to nurse him; and they would have a child that would die young. They met when Phillip was 17 and working in a garage. They did marry, and they did have a son, who died young, just months after birth.

I tell Werewolf that I need the impossible: proof. Can he tell me one thing that will make me believe in angels?

“Everyone always wants proof,” he says. “But I can’t give that proof.”

His youngest daughter Megan is 15. I ask how she copes having such an unusual father. “All her friends know who her father is and her mom, Fuamnach. Oh did I mean she is the white

witch? And that her name Fuamnach is from Irish legend: a witch goddess who turns Midir’s second wife, the heroine Étaín, into a pool of water, then a worm, and finally a beautiful butterfly.

Some of the club members’ knowledge of everything motorbike made me tentatively confident that, with a fair wind, I might even make it. The route takes us through the town of Dromara, which is heavy on vowels but also heavy on pensioners crossing the road without looking. Very handy for practising those emergency stops.

Thirty minutes later my ride for the day: a staggeringly ugly - and staggeringly enormous - gun-metal grey sporty complete with the panniers that seemed to contain my entire world, at that

After a couple of seconds of familiarization and extra lip service, we bade farewell and were off on the 200 mile wobble, along the A-roads somewhat circumspectly, frustrated bikers stuck behind tractor drivers. I felt euphoric and terrified in equal measure, fully grasping the popular motorcycling saying: ‘Only a biker knows why a dog sticks its head out of a car window.’

On that rain-soaked journey, I had time to reflect on what had brought me to this point. Ten years

previously, I had met a woman. Within days, we had moved in together and then lived in unmitigated bliss.

She is the best friend I had ever had, the person that made me - are you still there, cliche fans? - wonderfully whole, throwing light into the darkest corners.

That she was stunningly beautiful only added to a peachy sense of self-satisfaction that life wasn’t treating me too badly. Shallow, but there you go. I used to watch her sleeping and will her to wake up, as if any time away from her was wasted. We got married with my Dad walking both of us down the sandy isle. We were going to start a family, so adopted Lauren. I have the perfect life.

Then, there weren’t really any rows, no slow decay, just a flick of a switch; memories of

my dad’s voice frozen for rose-tinted eternity - an untimely death. In desperation, I gave my inner Yeats’s a go, ‘He Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven’, but I may as well have given him the instructions for the dishwasher. He doesn’t tread softly in my dreams...in true Irish form, he Riverdances on them.’

So where could I go while I was waiting to die? Because of my parents, I don’t really have need of a bucket list, and I thank them for all their support during all my difficult phases.

There were the messy fumblings with other women before Kim, that always, frustratingly, felt like an infidelity, and a terrifying trip to the land of misogyny - and, girl, is there a big ol’ gang of guys living there willing to recruit you to the cause.

I didn’t recognize myself any more. I was utterly stuck, approaching 30. My courage is iffy, my shoulders hurt. I know that tomorrow would be just like today. Bitterness had me by the throat.The ride, today, will definitely help.

I know I will fill much of the time I have left with reading. I devour everything I can get my hands

on. I know much of it now will be about life and death, trying to find some peace, some answers.I need to travel again; to find out what goes on in the afternoon (though hopefully not Hemingway’s version).

I need to travel not with the naivety of youth, when I was genuinely surprised to see my reflection staring back at me in the mirror, but by exposing myself to risk and failure. All that latent desire needed to burst forth was the requisite combination of Stella and a wild bunch of witnesses.

I will confess to feeling anxious. This anxiety is not about riding a motorcycle, or the impending isolation, or outlaw bikers following me, or breakdowns, but something else altogether.

It’s a dread of the unknown I’ve acquired lately that I cannot quite throw off. But this is exactly why I have to go forward.

I’ll keep praying and asking that things work out.

Keep playing my part: mother, wife, daughter, aunt, and friend to angels.

In relation to things to do with ‘tidying up the loose ends’ – I’m just giving them what they need, and am trying to remember not to take things personally. Have courage and strength, and know I’ll get through it.

I still don’t believe in angels, although I do believe Werewolf and Fuamnach are very caring persons, although they don’t really believe in God, but they tell me that they will pray for me anyway, just in case…

Having an Escape Path:

I was recently asked about how to avoid one of the most frequent types of motorcycle accidents, (the vehicle that turns left in front of you, violating your right of way, and what can you do about it).

This is a tough one, I am not trying to avoid the question, but the best answer is, it depends on the situation.

If for instance, you are driving on a two land road, approaching an intersection where you spot a vehicle that you believe may pull out in front of you.

First, you should be covering your brakes whenever there is a possibility that another vehicle may violate your right of way. For instance, if you are north bound and the vehicle is southbound and about to make a left hand turn, the best thing may be to first, brake hard then release the brakes and swerve to your left going around the back of the vehicle.

Of course, if you are going slow enough to stop, do so and avoid the swerving

maneuver. A good idea is to practice the brake and swerve maneuver in a parking lot so that when this situation arises, you will know what to do.

In this same situation, you are on a four or more lane road with a busy intersection you may have only one choice.

That would be to stop prior to hitting the vehicle as swerving to the left could cause a head on collision with oncoming traffic and swerving to the right could cause a collision with a vehicle going the same direction with you.

In other words, if there is an escape path, make sure you turn your head and eyes to that escape path. Never become target fixated on the left turning vehicle or you will surely hit it.

There is no hard and fast rule on this situation. The best thing to do is practice your braking. Concentrate on the front brake. Practice braking from 20, 30, to 60 or 70mph in a controlled environment, such as a deserted road or parking lot.

If you always ride at higher speeds, practice braking at those speeds. In a panic situation, you will always revert to your training.

If you never train, you will only have panic and dumb luck to rely on.

Its only money.

Is it just me, or are bike accessory costs going through the roof?

As I contemplate some neatadditions to my 2012 Street Glide, it’s looking like it’ll be a scaling back of my expectations.

With a number of overnight road trips planned this year, I’m in the market for a rigid back pack and possible a leather windscreen to wrap around the highway bars. But that is going to be about it. Heck, just those two items are gonna cost me 5 large.

And it’s not like I ever hide receipts for bike gear and upgrades, it’s just that I prefer to pay cash and stick the receipt in a file, somewhere near the back of the file cabinet for safe keeping. You know, out of sight, out of mind? My darling wife has this notion that for every dollar I spend on my bike, she spends on something on her wish list . . . and fair is fair. Right? So you probably get my drift. Whatever I buy from the Harley dealership is costing me, “double”. So the cold hard fact is, I need to carefully weigh out the pros and cons of any purchase that’s getting up into the hundreds of dollars.

Last spring when I bought my Street Glide, I specifically asked my wife if she planned on getting back on the bike with me ( 4 years earlier she witnessed a rather nasty bike spill and hadn’t been on since ) and she took about

a millisecond to shoot back a firm and definitive “NO”.

So I decided against buying the Ultra Classic which would have been ideal for the two of us, and went with my personal favorite, the Street Glide. That was April last year, and guess what my dear wife decided by mid summer?

Yup, she wants to get back on the bike. I should have seen that one coming. Only problem now, is that for me to buy the tour pack, with all the trimmings (and with a custom Harley paint job including flames the tour pack will no doubt have to be a special order) including a different riders seat, this is going to set me back thousands ! And that’s before I pay the spousal tax.

Well, on the positive side, she is coming back to do something she absolutely loved to do, and I know she’ll get back “in the zone” after a couple of rides, and we’ll have some great times together this summer. So when it’s all said and done, I just have to remind myself it’s only money. Somehow, we’ll make it work. We’ll find a way.

And isn’t life a lot like that? We have these best laid plans that often go south or turn quickly ina different direction? At the end of the day, we just remember what really is important in our lives, and that is usually God, family and health. With those priorities in place, come what may,we can deal with adversity, find solutions and work with one another to keep chins up... if we keep our eyes on Jesus. He will lead us on the path that is best for us, and his angels will watchover us.
